Side Story 2: The Secret of the Zhao Family

The next morning, Jiang Jinxiu was woken up by knocking on the door.

"Nannan, get up quickly, Grandma said she's going to take us to the old house."

Jiang Junrong's voice was filled with undisguised excitement.

Jiang Jinxiu rubbed her eyes, checked the time, and saw it was only six o'clock.

Her dad must have been so excited he didn't sleep all night.

After washing up, Jiang Jinxiu carried the sleeping baby downstairs.

Da Bao and Er Bao are already awake and are having breakfast at Grandma's.

“Wife, you’re going to the old house today, I want to go too.” Gu Xichen walked over with a bowl in his hand.

"Aren't you going back to school?"

"How could I miss such an important event if it was postponed for a day?"

Gu Xichen sat down next to her: "And I always felt that this matter was not so simple."

Jiang Jinxiu thought so too.

The "secret" that Grandma told her yesterday kept her up all night.

"Grandma, when are we leaving?" Jiang Junrong asked.

Grandma Luo glanced at the sky: "Let's leave after breakfast. That place is a bit far; it'll take all morning by bus."

Where is the old house?

"It's in a valley on the outskirts of the city. Back then, to escape the war, our Zhao family built a village there. Later, when things were peaceful, everyone moved to the city, and the place became empty."

Jiang Jinhua asked curiously, "Grandma, is that house still habitable?"

"It's habitable, and someone comes to clean and maintain it every year. However, many things haven't been touched and remain as they were."

After breakfast, the group set off in a grand procession.

Jiang Junrong, Zhou Wenjing, Jiang Jinxiu, Gu Xichen, Jiang Jinhua and Gu Xilan, plus Old Lady Luo and Zhou Ying, filled both cars.

The three children stayed at home and were cared for by Xie Ji and the nanny.

After driving for two hours, we finally arrived at the mouth of a valley.

This place is already very remote, surrounded by mountains, with only one narrow path leading into the valley.

"This is it."

Grandma Luo pointed ahead: "Go in from here, and it'll be there in half an hour by car."

Grandma Luo directed Gu Xichen and the others to move two large stones by the side of the path, revealing a road that could be driven in. The car slowly drove in along the gravel road, with dense woods on both sides.

Jiang Jinxiu felt that the air here was particularly fresh, giving her an indescribable sense of comfort.

Suddenly, she sensed that the oranges in the space were restless.

"Meow meow meow..." Master, there is a strong spiritual energy here.

Jiang Jinxiu was startled.

Orange rarely gets this excited. Could there really be something special about this place?

"We've arrived," said Grandma Luo.

Jiang Jinxiu looked up and saw a quaint, antique manor in front of her.

With its blue bricks and gray tiles, carved beams and painted rafters, the building is somewhat old, but you can still see the grandeur of its former days.

"What a huge courtyard!" Jiang Junrong exclaimed.

"This is just the front yard; there are several more courtyards behind it."

Grandma Luo got out of the car, took a key out of her bag, and said, "Anbang, you open the door."

Jiang Junrong took the keys, his hands trembling slightly.

This was the first time he had ever used a key to open his own door.

With a creak, the heavy wooden door was pushed open.

As soon as Jiang Junrong stepped into the courtyard, he was stunned.

Everything before him was exactly the same as the scene he had seen in his dream.

“I remember this place.”

He pointed to a well in the center of the courtyard: "I fell into this well once when I was a child, and my older brother pulled me out."

Grandma Luo's eyes reddened again: "You still remember these?"

"It's not very clear, it's like a dream. But now that I see the real thing, the memory is clear."

Jiang Jinxiu followed behind, feeling increasingly puzzled as they walked.

This place felt so familiar to her, like her own space.

"Grandma, what is the secret you were talking about?" she couldn't help but ask.

Grandma Luo smiled mysteriously: "Don't rush, let's finish the tour first."

They went to the main house first.

The furniture in the house was all covered with cloth, and when I lifted it up, I was surprised to find that it was in very good condition.

"This is your room when you were a child."

Grandma Luo pushed open a door, revealing a small bedroom with several rag dolls on the bed.

Jiang Junrong walked in and suddenly burst into tears.

"Father, what's wrong?" Jiang Jinxiu was startled.

"I remember now."

Jiang Junrong stroked the little wooden horse beside the bed: "This is my toy. And this rag doll, my mother made it for me."

Grandma Luo came over and hugged her son: "Xiaobao, I'm so sorry. If it weren't for that war..."

"Mother, stop talking. Aren't we reunited now?"

Jiang Jinxiu was deeply moved as she watched the father and son embrace and weep.

But she was more curious about the secret.

"Grandma, can we see the secret you mentioned?"

Grandma Luo wiped away her tears: "Okay, come with me."

She led everyone to the backyard.

The backyard is bigger than the front yard, and it also has a small garden.

There is a pavilion in the center of the garden, and next to the pavilion is an ancient well.

"The secret is right here," Grandma Luo said, pointing to the ancient well.

"Inside the well?" Jiang Jinhua looked curiously at the well opening.

“Not in the well, but at the bottom of the well,” said Grandma Luo, pressing down on a pillar of the pavilion.

Suddenly, the ground next to the ancient well began to move, revealing an entrance.

"This is..." Everyone was stunned.

"An underground chamber."

Grandma Luo said, "Our Zhao family's real secret is down below. Anbang, you are a member of the Zhao family, and you have the right to know this secret."

Jiang Junrong stared at the dark entrance, hesitating for a moment. "Mother, what's down there?"
