Chapter 4 Neighbors

The old lady was already seriously ill, and Chen Man originally just wanted to say that she would take care of her in her old age so that the old lady would not worry.

Unexpectedly, this brought up her sad story. Afraid that she would break down from crying, Chen Man hurried to comfort her.

Chen Man's father was an orphan, and her mother was an only child because her grandmother fell ill when she gave birth to her and could not have any more children.

When Chen Man just entered high school, her father died in a fire while trying to put out a fire.

My mother died suddenly at her job in the hospital more than half a year ago due to overwork.

My grandfather worked very hard when he was young. He was so tired that he was sick all over. He passed away a few years ago.

Chen Man was preparing for the college entrance examination at the time. She only found out about this after the exam when her grandmother was taken in to live with her for a few months.

Chen Man's mental state is similar to that of her grandmother.

I don’t know what sin my family has committed.

In fact, she couldn't figure out what went wrong in her family.

Sometimes, she would suddenly remember that she had become an adult 'orphan'.

More often than not, she felt that her mother was still working in the hospital, but they didn't see each other often because she was busy.

But when she woke up, her heart ached.

Just as I stopped my grandmother's tears, I heard footsteps outside.

The footsteps approached and entered the door. Chen Man saw an energetic and well-dressed old lady.

Holding a bowl in one hand, she noticed Chen Man the moment she entered the room. She looked at her with a smile and said to her grandmother, "Guizhen, I heard your granddaughter is here to see you. Is she this pretty girl?"

Grandma smiled and said to her, "Yes, this is my granddaughter, Chen Man. She said she would come to see me a long time ago, but she's been busy with work. Oh, how can I ask you to bring me food every day? It's too much trouble!"

He introduced her to Chen Man again, "I just saw Jun Yang brought you here. Where's Jun Yang? Old Man, this old lady is Jun Yang's grandmother. We're of the same generation, so you can just call her Grandma. Jun Yang is of the same generation as you, so you can call her Brother."

Chen Man smiled widely and called out sweetly to Jun Yang's grandmother, "Grandma."

As for my brother?

Grandma Junyang smiled with satisfaction and replied, "Hey."

The next moment she asked, "Haven't you had dinner yet? I only brought food to your grandma because she's not feeling well. I say neighbors should look out for each other. Who doesn't have that day? You've been running around all day, so you must be hungry. Come back with me and eat something. It'll save us from carrying food back and forth."

Chen Man waved her hands repeatedly and hurriedly said, "No, no, grandma, I can just make something myself. No need to bother. I'm not that hungry yet."

Her biggest shortcoming is that she doesn't like to trouble others.

Why does she think this is a shortcoming? Because the greatest attribute of human beings is sociality, and communication with each other is what makes a society.

If you don't bother him, he won't bother you. Everyone does their own thing, so there's less interaction.

She always believed that people should trouble others appropriately.

For example, a generous girl will smile and say, "Thank you, grandma" at this moment, and then buy a few pounds of fruit as a return gift to the old lady the next day. This will increase interpersonal communication and promote intimacy between the two.

But she would habitually refuse, always feeling that she could not repay others for their kindness.

Chapter 4 (Part 2) Rich Family

However, Junyang's grandmother disagreed and pretended to be angry, not allowing any discussion.

"Of course you wouldn't be hungry. You just arrived and you're not familiar with the place. What are you going to cook? You look so delicate. Are you used to using a wood stove in the countryside?"

"Be good and just come to my house and have something to eat. It's ready. We have plenty of time tomorrow, so take your time to study and make it yourself. It's hot out now, so don't burn the kitchen down."

As she spoke, Junyang's grandmother reached out to pull her.

Chen Man looked at her grandmother for help, but her grandmother smiled and said, "Man, go ahead. I can't move now and can't get out of bed to cook for you. Your grandmother is right, you have never used an earthen stove, I'm afraid you won't know how to use it."

Chen Man was indeed hungry and had just lied.

It's not a courtesy to keep refusing someone's kindness.

She was a little embarrassed. It was really strange and awkward to go to someone else's house for dinner.

Chen Man went to take the food that Junyang's grandmother had placed on the bedside cabinet and prepared to feed her grandmother.

Grandma smiled and raised her hand. "I can still eat by myself. Don't worry about me. Go quickly."

Grandma Junyang exchanged the bowl for her grandmother's own, and Chen Man followed Grandma Junyang back home.

The two houses are separated by a wide asphalt road.

Grandma Junyang kept looking back at her, afraid that she would not catch up.

"You're welcome. Your grandmother and I have a very good relationship. She used to take care of us all the time."

From the outside, you can't really see much of Xu Junyang's home. All you can see is the majestic and simple black and white Chinese-style building.

After entering the gate, the interior is a quadrangle with a circular corridor. In the center is a large and clear pond, surrounded by white stone railings, with flowers and trees arranged around the edge, and a wide curved bridge made of bluestone slabs spanning the pond.

A screen blocks the view between the front door and the living room.

Chen Man looked up and saw the same circular corridor on the second floor. Beside the hollow carved railings, several lush welcoming pines stretched out.

The entire building combines elegance and solemnity, full of charm and beauty.

Chen Man recalled Secretary Li’s introduction to Xu Junyang. Was he a village cadre?

Is the home of a village official so luxurious?

Chen Man knew that she didn't understand, and it was definitely not what she imagined.
