Chapter 28 From Being Left Behind as a Child to Growing Up
“What Secretary Bo said is exactly the same as what was shown in the surveillance footage. I just asked downstairs, and the person who deleted the surveillance footage is named Zhou Youjun. Last night, he was instructed by a junior manager in the administrative department. And that administrative manager is the manager who stood up for that woman in the video.”
"So, everything is clear. They were afraid that Secretary Bo would apply to check the surveillance footage, so they deleted the footage in advance. This morning, they also sent the edited video to the group, assuming that Secretary Bo had no evidence to prove his innocence. They wanted to deliberately ruin Secretary Bo. What vicious people. Most importantly, who gave them the audacity to use such dirty tricks in the Li Group?"
Li He turned off the video, unplugged the USB drive and handed it to Jiang Chengli, "Have you given the legal department all the instructions?"
Jiang Chengli nodded. "I've already told them. They've searched the group chat for evidence and found out who posted the video and who shared it most frequently. They should be busy now, but there are quite a few groups, so it might take some time."
"In addition, the legal department has also collected the surveillance footage of the video that Zhou Youjun deleted. He himself has admitted it. Now, with the footage on this USB drive, the evidence collection should be completed within today."
Li He nodded. "Before you leave work, issue a notice with these two surveillance videos attached, clarify things for Secretary Bo, and send it to all departments so they can distribute it. Also, warn that no one is allowed to use the group's public resources to settle personal grudges; otherwise, the group will pursue the matter to the end."
"yes."
"Send me the detailed information on those four people before you leave work. Investigate their job duties, find someone to take over their work, and fire those who can be fired."
"yes."
After Jiang Chengli left, the gloomy look in Li He's eyes was no longer hidden.
Bo Wei is not someone you can bully. You must repay her tenfold or a hundredfold for the grievances she suffered.
...
Bo Wei spent the morning in a daze, but this daze was not as panicked as when she learned that the edited video had been leaked. Instead, she was waiting, waiting for President Li's decision.
The morning passed without anything happening, and she had no idea how President Li planned to handle the situation.
I was a little uneasy.
"It's noon, Weiwei, let's go down for lunch," Wendy asked her upon hearing the voice.
Bo Wei hadn't received the results yet, so she naturally didn't want to go down and attract attention. She shook her head and said, "I'm not hungry, you guys go ahead."
Everyone knew her current situation, so they didn't shout much.
"Shall we send you a portion?"
Bo Wei forced a smile, "No need, you guys go ahead."
Wendy put her hand on her shoulder. "It's okay. There's no need to question what President Li does."
Xu Xiangying looked back at her as she walked, exasperated. "If it were me, I'd go downstairs right now and feast, just waiting to see how those who wanted to see me fail would be slapped in the face! I'd be waiting to see how pathetic that little bitch's smug face would be when it was torn off!"
Bo Wei smiled bitterly; indeed, all living beings are multifaceted.
If she had Xu Xiangying's open-minded and decisive personality, she would have called the police last night, and none of this would have happened.
After the person left, the office immediately became quiet.
The phone's ringtone sounded somewhat ethereal in the quiet, empty environment.
Caller ID: Mom.
Bo Wei's usually quiet eyes showed a complex mix of emotions when she saw the caller ID.
She was left behind by her parents from a young age; her parents were not involved much in her childhood, adolescence, or even adulthood.
When my younger brother was in kindergarten, my parents took him to work in another city. They rarely came back for Chinese New Year, saying that the money they had for the transportation was enough for the holiday.
The longest she stayed back was during her senior year of high school, when her grandmother suddenly fell ill in the cold winter. The village helped take care of her for a few days, and when they saw that her grandmother was really seriously ill, they called them.
They returned and stayed for less than half a month before Grandma died, and then they buried her easily.
She goes home once a month. When she passes by the garbage station on her way back, she sees a familiar mattress. She glances at it a few times, puzzled but not thinking much about it. Usually, when an elderly person passes away, their family throws away their mattress. Many families have this purple-flowered mattress. Who went there?
As soon as she stepped into the yard, a gust of wind blew and froze her in the cold winter.
The front door of the house was torn down, and a strange mother walked into the main room, while a strange father walked out from the side room.
The room where Grandma lived, and all the things she used, just like her, have disappeared. Even though Grandma was standing at the door smiling at her back when she went to school.
No one told her, no one knew how important her grandmother was to her.
She later overheard villagers praising her grandmother's death, saying it was a good thing, as it didn't burden her descendants with care; the two of them stayed by her side for about ten days before sending her off. Unlike so-and-so who lingered in bed for half a year, requiring constant care and causing immense suffering for the younger generation.
Later, after she was admitted to university, her parents appeared in front of her with great joy and proudly welcomed her for an interview.
Two weeks later, her home, where she had lived for more than ten years, was demolished, leaving only the dilapidated foundation. She lived in a makeshift shed for a month before leaving this place, which was not the home she remembered, and went to university.
Bo Wei let her phone ring for a while before answering it just as it was about to hang up automatically, but she didn't say anything.
A middle-aged woman's voice came from the other end of the phone, "What are you doing? Why did it take you so long to answer the phone?"
"I just rested and was about to go have lunch." Bo Wei's voice was devoid of emotion.
"Oh, you want to eat? Well, you go eat first, we'll talk later."
"Just say what it is, I only have one hour for lunch break."
After a moment's hesitation, the person on the other end seemed to have found a reason to scold her, and spoke in a patient, lecturing tone, "You're supposed to be a housewife, don't you even know what day it is today? I noticed you hadn't called back, so I knew you weren't paying attention. I've called you myself now, and you didn't even bother to ask?"
Bo Wei then remembered that it was her nephew's birthday today. "Ziyi's birthday, I remember now."
After waiting a moment and seeing that she didn't say anything more, the person on the other end asked, puzzled, "What's wrong? As an auntie, aren't you going to do something?"
"I'll buy him an outfit online."
"Oh, how much does a set of clothes cost? At most a hundred or two hundred yuan."
"Then what else do you want?"
"He doesn't lack clothes." She suddenly became interested. "Let me tell you, there are several extracurricular classes in town, right? The neighbor next door enrolled his kid in a street dance class. Oh my, it's true that spending money makes a difference. He's doing great now, so clever and lovable. Everyone praises him."
As Bo Wei listened to the excited and envious voices on the other end of the line, she felt her heart grow colder and colder, as if she had fallen into an icy pool, chilling her entire body.
