Chapter 169 Served in the Army
“Miss Su, you’re overthinking it. I didn’t go over at first because I wasn’t mentally prepared. After all, I’m the Liu family’s driver. How could I just stand by and do nothing when I saw you in danger?”
Kong Daqing's explanation sounds reasonable.
However, Su Jin doesn't think so.
"Even if you chose to step forward because of your position, there is no need to block a knife with your bare hands."
That takes a lot of courage and determination.
"I didn't think that much at the time; I was just focused on making sure you didn't get hurt."
Kong Daqing tried his best to appear confident.
Su Jin's face tightened, and she raised her voice to confirm one last time, "Is there really no other reason?"
Kong Daqing shook his head vigorously, "Really not! Even if it was only Miss Liu that day, I would have done the same!"
His deliberate emphasis was somewhat superfluous.
However, there was a brief silence between the two.
Su Jin frowned, knowing that if he didn't want to talk, she definitely wouldn't get anything out of him.
Kong Daqing sensed the oppressive atmosphere and urged Feng Xiue, who was in the inner room, "I asked you to make tea for Miss Su, why isn't it ready yet!"
"They're here! They're here!"
Feng Xiu'e came out of the inner room carrying an enamel mug.
"Miss Su, please have some tea."
He carefully placed the freshly poured tea in front of Su Jin.
Su Jin's gaze lingered on the cup. "Master Kong served in the army?"
Kong Daqing was slightly taken aback, then realized something, his eyebrows furrowed, and he became somewhat angry with Feng Xiue.
"How do you use this cup!"
The cup wasn't particularly valuable, but it was something only the military would have.
So Su Jin saw it at a glance.
Feng Xiu'e, unaware of what she had done wrong, tremblingly reminded, "This is the best cup in our house, and I just washed it in the inner room and scalded it with hot water before bringing it to Miss Su."
She thought her husband was worried that others would dislike him.
Kong Daqing knew it was too late to say anything now. Faced with Su Jin's meaningful gaze, he could only bite the bullet and explain, "That was all a long time ago."
"Where did Master Kong serve in the army? When did he come to the capital?"
Su Jin grasped the key point and continued to press for answers.
She didn't think it was a coincidence.
Kong Daqing's voice was stiff. "That all happened more than 20 years ago. I only served as a soldier in the south for two years before I was discharged. If you hadn't mentioned it, I would have almost forgotten about being a soldier."

Finally, he used an awkward laugh to cover something up.
"Master..." Feng Xiu'e looked astonished, clearly shocked by his words.
Kong Daqing suddenly shouted at her, "Who gave you the right to speak here? Go back inside right now!"
This action clearly indicated that they didn't want her to speak.
Su Jin had already seen through his lie. "Master Kong, let's just chat casually. Auntie can say whatever she wants."
"As a woman, she can't say anything!"
As Kong Daqing spoke, he gave Feng Xiue a meaningful look.
Feeling wronged, Feng Xiue went into the house with red eyes.
To ease the tension, Su Jin changed the subject.
"Does Master Kong have several children who also live here?"
“They’re all married and living in their hometown. I can drive, so I brought my wife to Beijing to make a living and ease the burden on our children.”
Kong Daqing's expression finally relaxed a bit.
Su Jin wasn't surprised. Judging from his accent, he wasn't from Beijing, so it wouldn't be easy for him to settle down and build a career in the capital.
