Chapter 18 Fishing for Turtle

Yu Hao was the organizer of the funeral for his great-grandfather. There was no other way. His son and grandson were not around, so his nephew had to take the lead. Fortunately, Yu Shengnan was there, and many people from the village also came out to help.

They don't care about aftershocks. There is a rule in their area that once a brother has died, he cannot see his brother during the funeral. He can only come over after the final banquet.

Originally, the great-grandfather left more than 13,000 yuan. Yu Shengnan thought that this was the old man's last journey, so she took out another 30,000 yuan and gave old man Yu Zhendong a dignified farewell.

On the day of the funeral, almost all the villagers came out to see the old man off. The old man never asked for money for medical treatment in the village, and almost every family had received help from him.

The family is also sad, but not too heartbroken. On the one hand, my great-grandfather was 96 years old, so it was a happy funeral. On the other hand, they didn't visit each other that often before.

Because my great-grandfather had been living in the village all year round since he was forty, and after my grandfather married my grandmother, he brought his family to open a pharmacy and a clinic in the county town, so my grandfather was very close to his eldest brother, but he couldn't be said to be particularly reluctant to part with him.

Whether they are family members or relatives, the key to whether they are close or not is how they get along with each other in daily life. If they don’t interact much, the feelings will not be that deep.

In other words, Yu Shengnan grew up with her great-grandfather, so she has a special affection for him. It is also because of this relationship that Yu's father and mother came together to take care of the old man's funeral, but they are usually very busy.

Just three days later, Dad Yu Haoran and Mom Bai Jingjing returned to the city. After all, they had to keep an eye on both the pharmacy and the clinic.

Instead, many people in the village stopped at the door of the great-grandfather's house with tears in their eyes.

"Grandpa, where are you going?"

Yu Shengnan saw that her grandfather was holding a woven basket in his left hand and a net bag with a bamboo pole in his right hand. No one knew what was in the net bag, and water was dripping from it.

"Let's go fishing at the reservoir. I was always busy before, but now your dad can handle it. It's time for me to enjoy life. Life is so unpredictable."

Grandpa walked out while talking, and Yu Shengnan followed him. He had nothing to do anyway. It was obvious that Grandpa was also inspired by his great-grandfather's words and was ready to enjoy life.

Xidayang Reservoir, the name sounds very domineering, but in fact it is in line with the name. It is a large reservoir in northern Hebei Province.

The reservoir was built in the 1950s and can be said to be the largest drinking water resource guarantee in western northern Hebei. Because the state has introduced a series of laws and regulations to ensure water supply safety, the reservoir has also been fully protected over the years.

There are many big fish in the reservoir, but fishing is generally not allowed. The place we are going to today is actually the exit of the reservoir. Because this exit is relatively wide and the Tang River connected to it has a large water surface in this area, it can be considered a small reservoir.

When Yu Shengnan and the others arrived, it was just past eight o'clock. The air was a bit chilly. After all, it was the end of September, and the weather was not as good as in the south. It was a bit chilly in the morning and evening.

"Hey, Grandpa, you've been here before. You've prepared this fishing spot very well." Yu Shengnan saw the fishing spot chosen by her grandfather. It was backed by a big tree. From the back, you couldn't see anyone in front of it. The huge bookcase could also block the sun, and the fishing spot in front had a missing piece of cement floor. It was flat and solid, with two half-abandoned chairs on it.

Grandpa just needs an electric kettle to make tea. Life is so relaxing and comfortable. Having an old friend around to chat and gossip with is so wonderful!

"Stop looking and come to work," the grandfather ordered his grandson around without mercy, assigning him the dirtiest and most tiring work.

"Pooh! Grandpa, what did you put in this bag? It stinks so much." Yu Shengnan saw the plastic bag thrown out by her grandfather and was about to open it when she was suddenly hit by a fishy smell.

"Haha, your nose isn't working well, that's not smelly at all, it smells really good for the treasure we're going to catch today!"

Yu Shengnan carefully opened the plastic bag again. Inside was a pig lung that was foaming with white foam, and a piece of liver. No wonder it smelled bad. It was such a hot day, and it had been covered in the plastic bag for quite some time, and it had even foamed with white foam.

"Grandpa, you prepared such a strong food, what are you planning to feed it?"

"Hehe, you don't know, right? This is what happened before. Old Whitehead and I were fishing here together. He caught a turtle, and I thought there must be more down there. Even though this thing may smell bad, Old Wang next door really likes it!"

"Okay, this is my own grandfather, and I'm already making fun of him. And what about the Wang next door? Whose Wang next door is really a fucking idiot?"

"How do I use this?" Yu Shengnan had never caught a turtle before, so she didn't know how to do it.

"Just use this line to tie the pig lungs tightly." It turned out that grandpa had a bamboo pole and a long roll of nylon rope in his pocket. He tied one end of the bamboo pole and the other end of the pig lungs, and it became a fishing rod.

No wonder Yu Shengnan was surprised at first when she saw why the bamboo pole was so smooth for fishing.

In fact, pig liver is better for catching turtles. Maybe grandpa didn’t have much when he bought it, and there was only a small piece of pig liver, so he didn’t want to use the pig liver right away. Yu Shengnan didn’t know how effective it would be to use pig lungs to catch turtles.

It's a long wait until the pig lungs sink into the water. There is no float, and you can only tell whether you have caught a turtle by the feel of it.

"Grandpa, you should at least prepare a fish hook. Isn't it a bit unprofessional to not even have a hook?"

"You are an amateur. A turtle won't open its mouth when it wants something. You don't need to hook it. Do you see this?" he said as he took out a small knife.

"If a turtle really bites me, I don't even need to remove the hook. I can just bait it and everything will be done," he said with a smug look on his face.
