Chapter 247: Skinning Each House One by One
Su Lu ignored what everyone was thinking, put his arm around Qin Xiaoxiao and went out the door. He put down a small stool and the couple sat down again, still in the first row.
Aunt Song and Aunt Liu quickly came over, looking at Qin Xiaoxiao and Su Lu with admiration.
With so many people in the courtyard, these two managed to come out unscathed after beating someone up and continue watching the show. They're really something!
We must learn!
"Honey, have a snack first to tide you over. My mom will have dinner ready and bring it out to us soon."
"You know, they always have to make you angry while you're eating, otherwise we'd all be full by now."
Aunt Liu and Aunt Song were both shocked.
Is this even human language? Is flipping the table someone else's fault?
You two at least ate a couple of bites. They saw it all; apart from those two, nobody at the table ate much, and they're still hungry.
Qin Xiaoxiao's body no longer ached, and her head was no longer dizzy. She happily ate red date cake under Su Lu's care, but as she ate, she became unhappy.
"It's too dry and I'm feeling uneasy, Su Lu. Let's eat something different tomorrow. I've had enough."
Su Lu quickly offered the water, "Okay, if you don't like it, we'll change it. I'll go to the county supply and marketing cooperative to buy it for you tomorrow."
Qin Xiaoxiao nodded, took a sip of water, and said, "Alright, let's leave it at that for today. Just make do."
Aunt Song and Aunt Liu rolled their eyes as they listened, and the other villagers in Qinjiagou looked at the two of them with envy, no longer even wanting to watch the noisy commotion in the Su family's courtyard.
In the main room of the Su family, the old lady Gao, who had fainted, had woken up and started crying. She cried for a while, complaining about her bad luck in having the Su family as relatives. She cried for her daughter's bad luck in marrying into the Su family. She cried for the family's lack of money and the fact that they had to pay for Qin Xiaoxiao's medical treatment. She felt that Qin Xiaoxiao and Su Lu were bullying them too much.
Because her crying was so loud, Su Lu and Qin Xiaoxiao outside the courtyard heard it clearly. The Su family members didn't dare to confront her, but Su Lu and Qin Xiaoxiao didn't tolerate it.
Su Lu stood up, flicked his coat, and said, "Mrs. Gao, don't go too far. You say your daughter is unlucky to have married into the Su family, but as her mother, why don't you try to help her? Where is your money? Take it out and build a house for your daughter. Once you build a new house, your daughter will be free from the Su family and her life will be better."
If all else fails, just take your daughter back home. If she were my daughter, I wouldn't let her suffer any injustice. So what if we get a divorce? Life goes on even after a divorce, right? Just find someone else.
The villagers of Qinjiacun were once again stunned.
Good grief, he immediately started advocating for his older brother and sister-in-law to get a divorce. He really doesn't care about stirring up trouble!
Su Ming was furious. He wanted to go out and teach his younger brother a lesson, but he couldn't beat him. He wanted to yell back, but he couldn't win an argument with Su Lu. What could he do? He could only endure it.
After hearing Su Lu's words, Old Mrs. Gao could no longer cry. She was afraid that if her daughter really got divorced and went back to her parents' home, her family wouldn't have enough food to support her daughter.
When Grandma Zhao and several other relatives in the courtyard saw that things had escalated to this point and the Su family still hadn't given in, they started making a scene again.
One family said their daughter had a hard life, another said their son-in-law had earned a lot of money for the family, yet another said that Su Lu had been supported by their daughter and son-in-law all these years, and now that he had built a house, their daughter should also get a share, while yet another said that Qin Xiaoxiao hadn't even entered the family yet and wasn't considered a member of the Su family. Although the Su family had split up, there was no reason to give a share to the fiancée, so Su Lu shouldn't get his share either.
In short, everyone wanted to gain an advantage, and the three houses in the backyard couldn't be given to Su Lu; they had to be divided among the other houses.
Qin Xiaoxiao and Su Lu listened with great interest, cracking sunflower seeds with gusto. The key point is that the two of them didn't know how many they had stuffed into their pockets. They had been eating for more than two hours without stopping and still hadn't finished. They could still grab sunflower seeds out of their pockets, and even Aunt Song and Aunt Liu had plenty in their hands.
Qin Xiaoxiao and Su Lu ate sunflower seeds one handful at a time, watching the show as they ate, with Su Lu occasionally giving Qin Xiaoxiao some explanations.
"Old Mrs. Gao's husband died when she was young. I heard that she had an ambiguous relationship with an old man surnamed Qiu from their village. My mother disagreed when my sister-in-law entered the family, but my older brother was happy to accept it."
"This old lady Zhao and her husband got together later. They say that if you have a stepmother, you'll have a stepfather. She didn't treat her first wife's son well at all. That child did all the housework. He was working in the fields to earn money before he was even eight years old. He even worked as a long-term laborer for a landlord. I heard that boy was very handsome. It's a pity that he didn't live past fourteen. He died before he was an adult."
"This widow Yao is a sensible person. She speaks softly, but every word she says hits the nail on the head. Did you hear that? She doesn't approve of these people making trouble, and she has no interest in taking our share."
He's a good person, but he doesn't know how to raise a daughter, and he's blind to good judgment, choosing such a scoundrel as his son-in-law.
“This is my grandmother’s older brother. He’s a very nice man. I heard that he doted on my grandmother when he was young. Later, due to the war, the family was separated. When they reunited, they were all over fifty years old and were not very close anymore. He came to visit once more than ten years ago. This time, he probably came to visit again because of the new house.”
"The Ma family favors sons over daughters; the whole family is worthless."
"This old man from the Liu family married three concubines when he was young, and I heard that one of them still lives in their village."
"This old lady of the Hong family is a wise woman, but unfortunately, none of her sons are good. The eldest son steals chickens and dogs, the second son resells goods, the third son peeps at the village girls bathing, and the fourth son has recently hooked up with a widow in the village and is thinking of divorcing his wife to marry the widow."
...
Su Lu, with her quick wit, recounted every detail about the relatives who came to the Su family, leaving no one out. The villagers of Qinjiagou listened in shock and sighs, and sometimes they even had to ask Su Lu themselves what happened to her later.
The relatives in the courtyard stopped arguing. Except for Su Lu, who was talking about the main character, everyone else pricked up their ears to listen to the gossip.
After he finished speaking, Qin Feng and Qin Ye, who had been watching the show from the sidelines, exchanged a glance. One of them stepped back to find Qin Aiguo, while the other strode to the gate of the Su family compound.
Looking down, I saw a pile of sunflower seed shells at the feet of the two troublesome foodies—enough to burn a whole stove.
Qin Feng's lips twitched slightly, he secretly rolled his eyes, and walked into the Su family's gate.
"Zhiyuan, we're not done chatting yet?"
Su Zhiyuan was in a real bind. These relatives were like they had no ears. No matter how he explained, they wouldn't listen and wouldn't leave. They kept talking about how to divide the houses in the backyard. They were fighting over one house for each branch of the family. He needed to have that many houses!
Besides, the house in the backyard doesn't belong to him anymore, it belongs to Su Lu, so his opinion doesn't count!
But these people wouldn't listen. They were convinced that Su Lu was their son and that he had to listen to them. They insisted on interfering and forcing him to share the house. Wasn't that just making a scene?
