Meeting a friend (1)
The verdict in Xia Xinwen's case was a complete reversal in court. Just when everyone thought he couldn't escape legal punishment no matter how much he pleaded, the defense lawyer presented ample witness testimony and physical evidence to prove his innocence and directly accused Cao Zheng. Xia Xinwen was acquitted in court. However, as he was overcome with emotion and tears welled in his eyes, he discovered that no one congratulated him. His wife, who had tirelessly sought help for him, and his daughter, who had been worrying about him, simply watched silently from a corner of the courtroom as he rejoiced alone with a strange, attentive man beside him. After a brief moment, they left together, never to look back. This moment filled the emotional Xia Xinwen with a touch of melancholy. Perhaps, from now on, they would truly never see each other again.
Xia Tong's mother had essentially tacitly approved of Xia Tong and Fu Jia's relationship, but she always reminded her: "Girls should protect themselves, be reserved, and have self-respect." The Fu family's attitude was also very clear: the marriage was to be arranged first, and the wedding date would depend on the two girls' wishes.
The engagement ceremony was actually quite simple. Since the two of them hadn't graduated yet, they tried to keep it low-key. The two families had a meal and then went their separate ways. Unfortunately, Fu Jia got completely drunk with his friends and kept insisting on seeing Xia Xiaotong. They didn't dare send Fu Jia to Xia Tong's house in such a state and embarrass him in front of their elders, so they had to ask Xia Tong to go to Shengshi Haoyuan to appease him.
As soon as Xia Tong pushed open the door, she heard Fu Jia yelling at the top of her lungs, "Xia Xiaotong—where's Xia Xiaotong?!"
Xia Tong frowned, feeling utterly embarrassed. Meanwhile, Fu Jia's group of friends immediately bowed and scraped as soon as Xia Tong entered, as if they were already quite pleased to see her: "Sister-in-law, you've finally arrived!"
"Hello, sister-in-law! Goodbye, sister-in-law!" They ran away in a flash, afraid that this big trouble would come back to haunt them.
When Xia Tong entered the room, she saw Fu Jia lying on the bed, his clothes disheveled, one side of his shirt tucked into his pants, the other hanging out. His face was flushed, his handsome brows were furrowed, and he kept muttering to himself. He saw Xia Tong and started yelling again, "Xia Xiaotong! You come here right now!"
Xia Tong pouted when she saw his drunken, pathetic state. "He's so drunk, yet he's still bossing me around!" She ignored him.
"Xia Xiaotong! Didn't you hear me?!" Fu Jia was getting angry when she saw that Xia Xiaotong was ignoring her, so she emphasized it again.
"What's wrong?" Xia Tong's tone was also very unpleasant.
"Come here and give me a kiss." Fu Jia suddenly sat up and said in a commanding tone.
Xia Tong was taken aback by his words and said helplessly, "Go take a shower, stop making such a fuss!" With that, she went to the bathroom to run a bath for him.
Are you coming or not?
"No."
"Then I'll come over and let you kiss me." Fu Jia looked at her with a somewhat aggrieved expression, then climbed off the bed and staggered towards Xia Tong.
When Xia Tong saw that he was starting to get restless again, afraid that he would fall or get hurt, she quickly ran over and hugged him, coaxing him back to bed: "Stop messing around, I'm here now."
As soon as Fu Jia was moved to the bed, he immediately wrapped his arms around Xia Tong's waist, his big, round, dark eyes staring at her with a slightly confused look: "Why don't you kiss me?"
Xia Tong was speechless. Why are you so silly when you're drunk?
"Why don't you kiss me?" Fu Jia was dissatisfied with her silence, like a child insisting on an answer.
Just as Xia Tong was trying to figure out how to brush him off, Fu Jia spoke again: "Don't you like me?" He asked the question cautiously, like a student who had failed an exam and was too afraid to ask their score, their eyes filled with unease. She recalled that since they got together, Fu Jia had never asked such a question. She had thought he didn't care, but now she realized he was afraid to ask. Even when her mother was about to hit him, she had blurted out that she liked him. Why didn't he believe her?
Confessing to a drunkard was relatively harmless for Xia Tong. She paused for a moment, then spoke, "Actually, I—wait, are you asleep?" She carefully examined Fu Jia's face, gently patted him twice, and realized he was indeed asleep! Just as she was about to confess! Xia Tong gritted her teeth, grabbed his neck, and angrily said, "You fell asleep as soon as I arrived? Are you kidding me?!"
Fu Jia was a little annoyed that she had woken him up. He frowned and opened his eyes, staring at her for a long time before realizing it was Xia Tong. He kissed Xia Tong's lips soothingly, then mumbled in a coaxing tone, "Shh—don't make a sound, let's go to sleep." Then he hugged Xia Tong's back tightly and continued to sleep peacefully.
Xia Tong was both amused and exasperated by him. Who was the child here?!
She tried hard to pry Fu Jia's arms off, but he held her tightly. To keep Xia Tong in his arms quiet, Fu Jia even used his legs, like a powerful octopus, to wrap her up.
Xia Tong's smile vanished: "My mom won't let me stay here overnight!"
When Fu Jia woke up the next morning, Xia Tong had already bought breakfast. At the table, Xia Tong asked, "Were you really drunk last night or were you faking it?"
Fu Jia was somewhat puzzled and gave her a speechless look: "What do you think?"
"Do you remember what you said last night?" Xia Tong put down her chopsticks, crossed her arms in front of her chest, looking like she was about to lay everything out.
Seeing her like this, Fu Jia became a little nervous and stared at her, asking, "What did I say?"
"You keep asking me if I like you or not." Xia Tong stared at him, her tone very serious.
"Oh." Fu Jia didn't press further, but simply lowered her head and continued drinking her soy milk, looking rather uninterested.
"What do you mean 'oh'? Don't you want to know the answer?" Xia Tong frowned.
Fu Jia finished the rest of her soy milk in one gulp, then abruptly stood up and walked towards the living room, impatiently tossing out, "Who wants to know such a boring answer!"
Xia Tong, who had been holding back a lot of words, choked back her anger and poked the fried egg on the plate hard with her chopsticks, as if it were Fu Jia's face: "Serves you right for being so stubborn and concerned about saving face! I'll make you choke on it!"
That evening, Fu Jia took Xia Tong to meet some friends, and Xia Tong was dragged to a club without really understanding what was going on. It was a leisure club that Xia Tong had never heard of before, located in the suburbs, quite a distance from the city center. Xia Tong was getting impatient during the car ride and settled down to play on her phone.
"Don't play on your phone all the time, it's bad for your eyes." Fu Jia glanced at her, unhappy that she was leaving him, a grown man, alone to the side.
Xia Tong also felt a bit bored, so she took Fu Jia's phone: "How much longer until we arrive? I'm getting sleepy. What games do you have on your phone? Let me play some."
Fu Jia remained silent, still wanting to play on her phone.
Fu Jia's phone screen had a much higher resolution than hers, and it felt exceptionally good in her hand. However, this cool phone had practically no games. Xia Tong played a couple of rounds of Plants vs. Zombies before getting bored again, and started browsing through the various apps installed on her phone. Perhaps she accidentally touched an icon, because another interface popped up on the screen. Xia Tong looked closer and chuckled—it was Weibo!
She teased Fu Jia, "I didn't know you used Weibo!"
Upon hearing this, Fu Jia immediately frowned and reached out to snatch it back: "Give it back to me!" His tone also became impatient.
Xia Tong deftly dodged the phone, not intending to look closely, but in that instant of struggle, she noticed her own Weibo post from yesterday: "Although my feelings are a bit complicated, well, let me first congratulate myself on getting engaged soon! (*^__^*)"
Xia Tong had very few followers on Weibo, so her posts rarely received responses. Fu Jia neither retweeted nor commented, but simply posted after her: "Well, congratulations, you'll be mine soon." Fu Jia seemed to only follow Xia Tong, as her Weibo posts filled the screen; almost every time she posted, he would follow suit. She scrolled down, and two posts particularly caught her eye: "Why doesn't anyone want me?", and Fu Jia replied with almost the same thing: "Yeah, why don't you want me?"
She recalled that it was around the time her parents divorced, and she had wallowed in self-pity for a long time, never expecting that someone would be there for her through her unhappiness. A warmth filled her heart; she felt lucky to have found someone she could rely on.
Fu Jia's expression turned somewhat unpleasant, and she said coldly with a stern face, "You're not allowed to look!"
Xia Tong closed Weibo, looking embarrassed: "Are you angry?"
"I didn't." Fu Jia's face was still ashen, and she was also a little embarrassed that her secret had been exposed.
"Don't be angry, I'm not angry, so don't hold it against me." Xia Tong leaned closer to him from the passenger seat, poked his arm with her hand, and smiled ingratiatingly.
"I'm driving, don't get too close to me!" Fu Jia's body stiffened slightly.
"Don't you really want to know if I like you or not?" Xia Tong moved closer and closer. She wasn't a bold and enthusiastic girl, but when faced with someone who was more awkward and shy than herself, she unconsciously became the one who took the initiative.
Fu Jia gripped the steering wheel tightly, her voice strained: "Don't come any closer."
Xia Tong saw that he was like a little boy who had encountered a female hooligan, and she rarely managed to tease him, so she became even more audacious: "Actually, I—"
Xia Tong brought her lips close to Fu Jia's ear, her breath hot against his skin, almost making his face flush. Fu Jia's voice trembled as he asked, "Actually, what are you saying?"
"Actually, I like you too—" Xia Tong whispered in his ear.
"Screech—" A sudden screech of brakes was heard as Fu Jia pulled Xia Tong, who was teasing him, onto his lap, cupped her face, and kissed her.
