Li Yueniang kept her word. Before it even got dark, she carried large and small bags and headed to the military family compound.
Su Jindong followed behind excitedly.
He knew from a young age that his grandmother had a natural ability to make people so angry they wanted to vomit blood.
If Grandma is unhappy on New Year's Eve this year, then that family will definitely not have a good time either.
Su Chang'an and Su Meifang both followed Su Yi's path and went to the army, so Qin Xiangxiang couldn't just see her two children whenever she wanted.
Especially during holidays like Chinese New Year, family reunions are probably only possible.
Early in the morning, Qin Xiangxiang started preparing the New Year's Eve meal. Her family was well-off, and with her two beloved children there, Qin Xiangxiang wanted to use all her skills.
So, in addition to dumplings with two different fillings, a whole table of delicious dishes was prepared for the meal.
Su Yi pulled Su Chang'an to play chess in the living room. The aunt who usually helped out was on holiday.
Su Meifang helped Qin Xiangxiang with chores in the living room. The two women whispered to each other, occasionally letting out a burst of cheerful laughter.
Qin Xiangxiang brought out the dishes, and called out with a smile as she listened to the firecrackers outside.
"You two, father and son, come wash your hands and get ready for dinner soon."
"I'm on night watch, there's plenty of time to get off!"
Su Chang'an's eyes never left the chessboard. "We'll be done in a bit, checkmate!"
Upon hearing Qin Xiangxiang's words, Su Yi quickly swept away the chess pieces on the board.
"Hey, hey, hey~ Dad, I'm going to checkmate you! You're cheating!"
"What cheating? Didn't you hear your mom calling you for dinner? We haven't finished playing yet, so at most it's a draw!"
"You're cheating! I've already checked!"
"I didn't see it~"
Qin Xiangxiang looked at the arguing father and son with gentle eyes, a picture of peaceful tranquility.
Before Qin Xiangxiang's smile could fade...
A loud crash.
The door was violently pushed open.
Li Yueniang and Su Jindong each carried a bag and barged in.
"Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear~"
"It's started snowing again outside. I told you to wear a hat, but you wouldn't. Did it get wet?"
"Don't catch a cold, it's the Lunar New Year."
"Xiangxiang, hurry up and get a towel to wipe your step-grandson down!"
While complaining, Li Yueniang patted the snowflakes off Su Jindong's body and casually gave instructions to Qin Xiangxiang.
Qin Xiangxiang looked at the grandmother and grandson who had suddenly appeared, and the veins on her forehead began to throb violently.
She felt her old problem had flared up again; she started experiencing chest tightness and shortness of breath once more.
She hadn't seen her for almost half a year and thought Li Yueniang was finally dead. How could she still be alive?
Big-mouthed Su Jindong grinned and called out, "Grandpa, Uncle, Aunt~"
Then he turned his face to Qin Xiangxiang, "Aunt Qin~"
Qin Xiangxiang was furious. According to Li Yueniang, her father's concubine was called "auntie" and her grandfather's concubine was called "auntie-grandmother".
You're Aunt Qin, your whole family are...
"Wow, Grandma, you were right! Aunt Qin really made a huge feast!"
"Grandpa, come quick, come quick, let's sit here!"
Su Jindong took a big step and sat down on the sofa, waving to Su Yi.
Su Yi doted on Su Qingci and Su Jindong. Since they weren't by his side and he couldn't see them often, plus they were younger than him, he basically granted their every wish.
Moreover, Li Yueniang did not extend her hatred to the younger generation. No matter how disgusted Su Yi was with her, he was still a division commander who had fought his way up from the battlefield.
Because of Su Yi's position, she couldn't stop her two grandsons from getting close to him. She understood all too well that in such turbulent times, they still needed this grandfather's protection to some extent.
So the two siblings liked their grandfather quite a bit from a young age.
Sure enough, the moment Su Yi saw his eldest grandson, he immediately forgot about his son.
He came running over excitedly and plopped down next to Su Jindong. "Oh my, my grandson! It's been so long since you've come to see your grandpa."
"Come here, let Grandpa see. Oh, you've gotten darker and thinner, but you've grown taller! Hahaha, you're looking more and more like Grandpa..."
His face was full of joy and pride, but when he looked up, he met Qin Xiangxiang's death stare.
Su Yi swallowed the rest of his words.
After several seconds, he awkwardly said, "Well, isn't today Lunar New Year's Eve?"
What are you doing here?
"Grandpa, I miss you so much. I'm coming to spend the New Year with you."
Qin Xiangxiang's pupils dilated, and she instantly bristled, "Who needs your company?"
"Li Yueniang, let me tell you, don't go too far. It's one thing to make a fuss at other times, but today is New Year's Eve. Can't you even let people have a peaceful New Year's Eve?"
Li Yueniang gracefully smoothed her slightly disheveled hair.
"Xiangxiang, we've known each other for so many years! Why are you still so hostile towards me?"
"Look, I know you don't welcome me. I haven't been here for almost half a year. I've always hoped that you and Yi'er would be doing well. Why would I cause trouble for you?"
“This year, not all three of us—Changqing, Jin Dong, and I—are home.
"Sigh, I'm getting old and don't have many years left to live. I just like being around people. It's kind of lonely with just the two of us at home. It just so happens that Jin Dong was missing his grandfather, so I brought him along!"
As she spoke, Li Yueniang quickly opened the bag in her hand and, without any hesitation, enthusiastically pulled Qin Xiangxiang, "Come, come, come and take a look."
"Look what I brought."
"This is brown sugar. See? It weighs almost two pounds!"
