Chapter 38 Making a fortune

Old Man Wei gave Su Qingci a suspicious look.

Su Qingci immediately took out two eggs from her handbag and stuffed them into her hand.

Without hesitation, the old man stuffed it into his pocket without batting an eye.

"Come find me at No. 17 Niuxiang Port during lunchtime."

"Okay, okay."

"Prepare more food, especially meat."

Upon hearing this, Su Qingci knew she had come to the right place.

The old man didn't have anything good to offer, and he wouldn't dare to ask for so much.

At that time, meat was so rare that even money couldn't guarantee you could buy it.

I strolled around town for a bit and bought a bamboo basket, a common item here. Time was running out.

Su Qingci found a secluded alley and slipped into the farm.

The time accumulated in the space has now reached more than forty hours.

Su Qingci hurried to fill the basket with things.

Two chickens, one duck, one fish, fifty eggs, ten catties of noodles, ten catties of flour, and a thirty-catty bag of rice.

After thinking about it, I took three more pieces of smoked bacon from the farmhouse restaurant.

There was no pork left, and she didn't know how to slaughter a pig.

I cleaned up the packaging and loaded the items onto the basket, making it completely full.

Su Qingci tried to carry it on her back.

"Ah~ It's so heavy."

"It must weigh at least a hundred pounds, right?"

"I hope the old man won't disappoint me."

Staggering out of the farm, they headed towards Niuxiang Port.

They quickly found Niuxiang Port in the slums of the north of the city.

Some neighbors who were enjoying the cool air in the alley were curiously examining the Suqing porcelain.

An elderly woman fanning herself with a palm-leaf fan saw that Su Qingci was fair-skinned and well-behaved, and couldn't help but ask, "Little girl, who are you looking for?"

"Auntie, have you eaten?"

“I’m from the Iron Hammer Commune next door. I just happened to be here to take care of some business and stopped by to visit my uncle.”

"My mom said it's No. 17 Niuxiang Port, this is the right place, isn't it?"

"Number 17? You're looking for Old Wei, right?"

"Auntie, I didn't come to the wrong place, did I?"

"That's right, that's right, it's the last room."

"I never expected that old Wei would have such a presentable niece."

"Never heard of it~"

"Bang bang bang~"

"Grandpa, are you home? I've come to see you."

"Here it comes, here it comes."

"Oh, child, you've come!"

"You look hot in this blazing sun. Come inside and sit down."

Old Wei grabbed Su Qingci and slammed the door shut.

The room was a small one-bedroom apartment. A cabinet stood in the middle of the long room, blocking half of the bed. A square table was placed against the cabinet outside to serve as the living room. The entire room was crammed with clutter, making it difficult for Su Qingci, who was carrying a basket on her back, to even turn around.

A five- or six-year-old boy leaned against the cabinet, looking timidly at Su Qingci, clutching two candies tightly in his hand.

Old Wei tidied up the things on the table and told Su Qingci to put down the basket.

After feeling the weight of the basket on his back, he could no longer hide the joy in his eyes.

The child was a little uneasy when a stranger suddenly entered the house. He cautiously leaned against Old Wei, holding his leg with one hand.

"What did you bring? Did you bring any fine grains or meat?"

"This is my grandson, Congcong," Old Wei explained when he saw Su Qingci looking at him.

"Yes, I brought it. Let me see your goods."

Old Wei took the initiative and asked, "What did you bring?"

Su Qingci didn't say anything, but directly opened the basket and took out the items one by one.

As soon as the two slaughtered chickens were brought out, Old Wei's eyes lit up instantly, and he unconsciously began to swallow.

Then duck, cured meat, fish, eggs, flour, noodles, and rice were all laid out.

The small table was completely filled.

Old Wei's hands began to tremble involuntarily.

"Wow, so many..."

"They're all refined grains, all good stuff."

"Such white flour and such high-quality rice, these are all rare finds."

"There's also meat; chicken, duck, and fish are all available."

"Just who are you?"

"No, no, no, the old man talked too much and broke the rules, he'll get a slap for talking."

Old Wei slapped his mouth, "Please don't take offense, sir."

"Wait a minute."

After a series of soft rustling sounds from inside the room, Old Wei emerged carrying a wooden box that was 18 cm wide, 30 cm long, and 10 cm high.

"The better ones are all here, I don't know if it's enough. I also have some less desirable ones here. If you don't mind, I'll give them to you too, consider it me taking advantage of you."

As he spoke, Old Wei pulled out a rather large cardboard box from under the table and handed it over.

"I'll keep an eye out for good things for you in the future."

He pushed the two boxes towards Su Qingci, watching her reaction nervously.

He thought the other party would at most bring some sweet potatoes, a small amount of refined grains, and half a pound to a pound of meat.

I didn't expect such a large-scale investment.

His eyes involuntarily turned to his eight-year-old grandson, who was still as thin as a five or six-year-old. He desperately needed these things.

Even if what he has in his possessions could be worth a fortune in a prosperous era, it would be worthless compared to life and food in a chaotic world.

Now, a small yellow croaker can't be exchanged for much on the black market, and his face even showed fear and pleading.

Su Qingci felt a pang of heartache upon seeing the slight fear in the old man's eyes.

He opened the box a crack and glanced at it casually. "That's enough, that's enough. Don't feel like you're taking advantage of me. This was consensual."

"But if you have any good stuff in the future, you can save it for me, and I'll bring you food in exchange."
