Xu Tieniu returned to Xiangnan Village in Taiping Town less than ten days later.
It was harvest time, and most of the team members had gone to the fields, making the whole village unusually quiet.
The village dog guarding the house got up and barked at the stranger who entered the village.
Some elderly people who stayed at home to take care of young children staggered out of the doorway to check the situation.
"Uncle, it's you again?" A little boy looked up at Xu Tieniu with a happy expression.
He got a piece of candy last time, and it was so sweet.
"Uncle, whose house are you going to? I'll take you there; I know all the houses in the village."
Xu Tieniu smiled憨厚ly, "This time, Uncle knows the way himself too."
Seeing the little boy's disappointed look, Xu Tieniu chuckled and took out a piece of candy. "But thank you anyway. Children who help others are good children. Here's a piece of candy as a reward!"
"Thank you, Uncle, hehehe~"
The boy grabbed the candy from Xu Tieniu's hand with a look of surprise, then turned and ran away shyly.
Xu Tieniu seemed to be thinking of something, and a complex look flashed in his eyes as he looked at the innocent child.
Outside the old courtyard, Xu Tieniu knocked on the dilapidated wooden door once again.
Squeak~
"Hey, grandma~, it's me. I came here a few days ago."
The old lady leaned closer and examined Xu Tieniu carefully. "Oh, it's you? Come in."
"You haven't found the person you're looking for yet?"
The old lady still remembered Xu Tieniu; she thought he seemed to be looking for someone.
Xu Tieniu smiled憨厚ly, "Found it, found it. I came here for something else."
"I want to ask you about someone else."
Who is it?
"Song Wenyuan".
"ah?"
Do you know someone named Song Wenyuan?
The old lady's hearing wasn't very good, and she had to listen several times before she understood. She smacked her lips a few times and asked, "You want to see him, don't you?"
Xu Tieniu was taken aback. Was there really a man named Song Wenyuan in the village?
"Let's go~", seeing that Xu Tieniu didn't say anything, the old lady stood up shakily, leaned on her cane and called Xu Tieniu to go out.
Upon seeing this, Xu Tieniu instinctively stepped forward to help the old lady and followed her outside.
After walking and stopping for quite some time, Xu Tieniu finally followed the old lady to a small hillside on the west side of the village.
Looking ahead, there are many small, uneven bumps.
The old lady led Xu Tieniu to a small mound overgrown with weeds, pointed with her cane, and said, "It's here!"
"You're from over there, right? We never kept in touch a few years ago, why are you coming to our door now?"
The people over there?
Xu Tieniu was completely bewildered.
It seems the captain was right; this old woman really is a bit out of her mind.
Did you bring him here to see an abandoned grave?
"Grandma, I'm talking about Song Wenyuan, who looks to be around fifty years old."
The old lady pouted and raised her cane. "That's right, I'm almost fifty."
"It's right here..."
"Why did you only arrive now? You're your family, and you haven't cared for us for so many years."
“The Li family is almost wiped out. If you don’t come soon, it will become a desolate graveyard with no one to take care of it.”
"This old woman is too old to walk anymore, and I don't care anymore."
Hearing the old woman muttering to herself, Xu Tieniu asked again, "Grandma, who are you talking about?"
"Who are you talking about? Wen Yuan, aren't you looking for Wen Yuan?"
"Poor thing, so young..."
"Didn't I tell you? That lady was definitely not easy to get along with. See, I wasn't wrong, was I? It took them so many years to find her, and by then she was already dead..."
"Even if he's still alive, at this age, what could he possibly get if he went back..."
"Short-lived wretch, not destined for wealth and fortune... Unlucky..."
Xu Tieniu listened to the old woman's ramblings, his mind a jumble of thoughts.
They patiently took the old lady back home. Judging from the sky, the commune members who had gone to work should also be going home for dinner.
Xu Tieniu said goodbye to the old lady and headed towards the brigade leader's house.
The brigade leader still remembered him. After all, a piece of pork was a valuable gift at that time. Even when his father-in-law was at his most prosperous, he wouldn't get to eat a piece of pork from him all year.
"Hey bro, hello there."
"Comrade, hello, you still haven't found him?"
"Come in, come in and sit down," the village head of Xiangnan Village greeted Xu Tieniu warmly.
Xu Tieniu politely waved his hand, took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, and handed one to the brigade leader.
"Brother, I'm here for something else."
The captain took the cigarette from Xu Tieniu and carefully sniffed it.
"Come on, let's talk over here."
The two stood by the pond not far away. Xu Tieniu took out a matchbox, lit a cigarette for himself, and then helped the brigade leader light his cigarette before asking a question.
"I'm here to inquire about someone else."
"Brother, is there a man named Song Wenyuan in your Xiangnan Village?"
Thinking of the old woman with unclear thinking who had led him around to look at the abandoned graves for half a day, Xu Tieniu inexplicably added, "If she were alive, she would be close to fifty."
Thinking of the age recorded in Li Rui's file, Xu Tieniu changed his mind again.
"No, no, no, it's probably around forty-six or forty-seven."
The captain lowered his head and began to think.
"Song Wenyuan?"
"Song Wenyuan~"
"Why does this name sound so familiar?"
The captain muttered it twice, then quickly slapped his thigh.
