Chapter 296 A Glimmer of Hope

Ma Chunmei, the daughter of a farmer in the suburbs of Beijing, is renowned for her beauty and is considered the most beautiful girl in the village.

In her youth, suitors flocked to her door, and eventually, through a matchmaker, she met her future husband, Guo Bing, a chef at the Jingxi Textile Factory.

The parents both felt that following the chef would lead to a good life, with plenty of good food and drink, and at the very least, a lifetime of food and clothing would be guaranteed.

At the beginning, Guo Bing also appeared honest and polite, always appearing simple and honest in front of outsiders.

But in reality, he was a tyrant, an alcoholic and abusive, who would beat his wife to vent his anger at the slightest dissatisfaction.

In front of outsiders, however, he remains the same kind and gentle cook.

At first, no one believed that Guo Bing would beat his wife.

Guo Bing, seeing that Ma Chunmei was just a girl from the countryside and wouldn't fight back, became even more ruthless, often beating her until she was covered in bruises. Even though Ma Chunmei had given birth to a son and a daughter for him, the situation did not improve.

On one occasion, Guo Bing's youngest son, who was only a few years old, couldn't bear to watch any longer and stood in front of Ma Chunmei when Guo Bing was hitting her.

"Bad dad, stop hitting my mom! What did my mom do wrong? She just told you to drink less alcohol!"

"It's Dad's fault. If you hit Mom again, I'll report you to the neighborhood committee!"

Hearing his son's rebellious words, which were simply disobedient and unfilial, how could Guo Bing, who was always autocratic and domineering, possibly tolerate it?

He slapped his youngest son across the face:

"You little brat, I feed you and give you water, and you still dare to disobey me like this?"

"You even reported me? Did this bitch teach you that? You've really gone too far! You think you're all grown up now?"

"I'll beat you to death today, you little brat, and see if you dare to bastard in front of me again!"

That fist, as big as a sandbag, was about to smash hard onto the youngest son.

As a mother, Ma Chunmei was unwilling to agree.

She endured so much hardship and humiliation in this family for so many years; if it weren't for her two children, she would have given up long ago.

Her child was the apple of her eye, her life.

Fortunately, both of her children are very filial and sensible, but her husband is a terrible person, making her life quite difficult.

Especially today, Ma Chunmei only advised her husband not to drink so much alcohol, because it would harm his health and cost money, and the family's expenses were quite high.

She only spoke timidly, because she knew she might get beaten if she did, but her family really didn't have much money left.

Guo Bing was a big spender, and the family could never save any money. With both children about to start school, she had to plan for their future, so she reluctantly tried to persuade her husband.

As a result, he was met with a storm of punches from Guo Bing!

Unexpectedly, her son, who was protecting her, was also implicated.

Guo Bing had been drinking heavily today and was beating people without restraint. Ma Chunmei knew that if she didn't intervene, her youngest son might be beaten to death by Guo Bing today.

Driven by an insatiable protectiveness, Ma Chunmei, with courage she didn't know where she got from, grabbed a pair of scissors and stabbed her husband in the waist.

This was a huge mess. Guo Bing died, Ma Chunmei was imprisoned, and the two children were left all alone and were eventually sent to their maternal grandparents' home.

Ma Chunmei was naturally imprisoned. In those days, it was common for husbands to beat their wives.

Although everyone sympathized with Ma Chunmei, she had indeed committed murder, and in the end, there was nothing that could be done.

In the past two days, Ma Chunmei received messages from several so-called important figures, asking her to die in someone else's place.

Just as she was lamenting her miserable fate, a pretty figure suddenly appeared in the closed cage.

“Ma Chunmei, you don’t want to die like this, without knowing why, do you? Besides, you don’t deserve to die. You did kill someone, but that scumbag deserves to die too.”

"You must never believe those people. If you really die, your children won't get away with it either..."

"Those people's words are like farts. They're saying nice things to you now, including making solemn promises, all to get you to cooperate. Who knows what they'll do next?"

"To eliminate any potential threats, they might even harm your children!"

Ma Chunmei was horrified when she heard what the other person said.

She thought about the whole thing carefully and realized that this situation could indeed happen. Not only would she die in vain, but her two children would also suffer a terrible fate.

"Who are you? You...can you help me?"

The newcomer was veiled, but her features were exceptionally beautiful; it was clear she was a captivating woman. At this moment, she merely chuckled softly.

"You don't need to know who I am, and I have no reason to lie to you. What good would that do me?"

"Besides, you have nothing left to lose. No matter what you choose, as long as you cooperate with those people, you will inevitably fall into their trap and be at their mercy!"

"Instead of doing that, you might as well choose to believe me! Maybe you still have a glimmer of hope."

"My thinking is simple: the person who sent you to die in his place is my enemy, and I don't want him to get away with it so easily!"

Hearing the masked man's words, Ma Chunmei couldn't help but give a bitter smile; she truly had no choice.

What they said is absolutely right. What can a simple peasant woman like her, with no power, influence, or background, do?

But what if she refuses or makes other choices? What will happen to her son and daughter?
