Ma Chunmei, the daughter of a farmer in the suburbs of Beijing, is renowned for her beauty and is considered the most beautiful girl in the village.
In her youth, suitors flocked to her door, and eventually, through a matchmaker, she met her future husband, Guo Bing, a chef at the Jingxi Textile Factory.
The parents both felt that following the chef would lead to a good life, with plenty of good food and drink, and at the very least, a lifetime of food and clothing would be guaranteed.
