Chapter 61: Yucheng, Spring 1966

Chapter 61: Yucheng, Spring 1966

In early autumn in Chongqing, the morning mist is lingering and the mountain city wakes up in the veil.

A breeze blew by, bringing a slight coolness. Xiuzhu felt a little cold as she walked in the courtyard, and she gently hugged her arms.

Gu Yu followed behind her, his eyes never leaving her. He knew that she was cold, but now he had four suitcases in his hands and had no time to spare.

"Xiuzhu, why don't you just follow me? I can block some of the wind for you."

Xiuzhu was about to reach home, but she still came behind him obediently, enjoying every second of warmth.

Today is the weekend, and I met many acquaintances one after another. When they saw Gu Yu, they were curious about this handsome stranger. Some even wanted him to meet their daughters.

Ye Yunrong stopped him in time and introduced that this was the fiancé that the old man in Jing City had chosen for Xiuzhu.

Unexpectedly, after hearing this, the aunts started gossiping endlessly, asking about Gu Yu's age, work, and family situation.

Ye Yunrong had a good temper and was completely helpless when being pestered.

Gu Yu was afraid that Xiuzhu would catch a cold, and he was impatient as he watched from the sidelines, but he said gently, "Aunts, I brought some specialties from Beijing City. We will visit you after we return home."

Then he sent them all away with a few words.

Xiuzhu felt that with these aunts' gossiping skills, they would definitely gossip about her behind her back, and maybe it would make the headlines in the Yucheng Military Region compound tomorrow.

However, she was only half right. That night, the fact that the beautiful little girl from the Lin family had a handsome fiancé from Beijing and followed her here quickly became a hot topic in the compound.

For a while, many young men broke up before they even had the chance to express their feelings.

In spring, the mountains are soft and the waters are beautiful, the city is full of colorful flowers, and the sun shines all over the world with its warm light.

Outside the house, the cherry trees have quietly blossomed, and the white flowers on the trees are dotted around Xiuzhu's window like scattered clouds.

But Xiuzhu had no time to care about it at the moment because she was being bullied by Gu Yu.

"Get up quickly, my dad is at home today."

"Have you forgotten that my dad kicked you out?"

Gu Yu looked at her and said in a hoarse voice: "I am so thick-skinned, do you really think I ran away because of being scolded? Little idiot, I was on a mission."

"I haven't seen you for almost a month. I miss you."

He sighed again and whispered, "I'll have to wait for you for a few more months."

Xiuzhu's mind went blank after hearing this. It was already May of 1967.

However, she didn't know the exact day it happened, but she always felt that the tragic fate of her family in the book would happen after that.

Even though she had moved all the valuables in the house to the secret location provided by Gu Yu, she was still afraid of the impending disaster.

"Xiuzhu, come down for dinner."

Hearing her father's voice, Xiuzhu was so scared that she quickly pushed Gu Yu away.

The man sat up helplessly, his forehead covered with sexy sweat.

The slightly messy hair made Gu Yu look even more charming.

Xiuzhu turned her head away quickly in annoyance.

Last month, her father blamed Gu Yu for influencing her and kicked him out, so she had some free time.

Speaking of which, Gu Yu is really shameless. He clearly asked him to stay at his house, but who knew that he would not leave after he came?

He came back today with his suitcase by himself, and it seems he wants to stay here again.

Seeing the two people coming downstairs, Ye Yunrong quickly asked them to sit down and eat. She looked at Gu Yu and said, "Just stay at home. Don't listen to your uncle Lin."

Gu Yu responded: "Okay, auntie, I'm sorry to bother you again."

Lin Zhongjun...

Don't think he doesn't know. This kid went back to Beijing for work. He had no intention of moving out. When he left last month, he only took a few sets of clothes with him. As a result, he was kicked out of the room by Arong for several days.

"Hmph, some people just rely on their age and thick skin," Lin Zhongjun said sarcastically at the dinner table.

Gu Yu smiled and picked up some food for Xiuzhu, pretending not to understand his father-in-law's sarcasm.

Xiuzhu has become accustomed to such occasions and shook her head silently in her heart. Over the past six months or so, whenever the two of them met, her father would criticize and ridicule Gu Yu in various ways, and then Gu Yu would behave like a bullied young wife, and in the end her father would be scolded by her mother.

"Lin Zhongjun, if you can't speak properly, just shut up."

Ye Yunrong really didn't like her husband's angry look. Gu Yu is such a good kid. He is caring to Xiuzhu and is also very good at work.

Lin Zhongjun felt wronged, but he couldn't say it.

Not only did Gu Yu want to snatch away his precious daughter, but even his own wife was on his side. What a scheming old man he was, deceiving the innocent female comrade in their family.

Sitting in front of the steaming table, Gu Yu had a triumphant smile on his face. It had been almost a year, and his father-in-law was still as bad as ever and as noisy as ever.

"Gu Yu, have you visited my aunt and her family when you returned to Beijing? My cousin is about to give birth to a baby, right?" Xiuzhu asked with concern, and put the lotus root, peanut and red bean soup in the spoon into her mouth.

"My aunt and the others are all fine. My cousin's due date is still a few months away," Gu Yu responded.

Then he picked up her bowl, poured more lotus root soup into it, and said, "It's good for women to eat more lotus root. You should eat more, and you, auntie, should eat more too."

As the saying goes: Men cannot live without leeks and women cannot live without lotus roots. They are extremely nutritious.

Xiuzhu frowned and sighed, "Of course I love to eat it, but it's not often available at the vegetable market."

"I haven't used the meat coupons you gave me. Today, I went with my mom to buy a roast chicken, but I only bought half a chicken. There were too many people in line, and they only sold half a chicken to each household."

Gu Yu also felt uncomfortable listening to this. The material control was becoming more and more strict. Thinking of the rumors he heard from his grandfather in Beijing, his eyes sank slightly.

He put the chicken leg Auntie Lin gave him into Xiuzhu's bowl and gently comforted her, "Don't worry, I'm here. I'll get you whatever you want to eat."

Then he turned to look at Lin Zhongjun, "Uncle, after dinner I want to discuss the matter of Beijing with you."

When Lin Zhongjun heard that it was a matter concerning Beijing, his expression became serious and he nodded in response.

Xiuzhu lowered her head to drink the soup and paused for a moment, her eyes flashing.
