August 3, 1977.
Nie Jinmei and Rong Zhengqing were clearing away the leftovers on the table. When they turned around, they found Song Zhi leaning stiffly against the wall, sweating profusely and holding his stomach.
"What's wrong?"
Several people quickly put down their things and walked towards her nervously.
Song Zhi smiled weakly at them: "I think I'm about to give birth, my water broke."
These words instantly exploded in the ears of several people, and everyone became visibly panicked.
Rong Zhengqing was the first to react. She supported Song Zhi and said to Nie Jinmei and Ran Qiu, "Teacher Ran, please go get the midwife. Jinmei, please go and boil some water."
The two nodded hurriedly.
Ran Qiu didn't even take a flashlight, and quickly set out in the moonlight to find a midwife.
"Can you still walk?" Rong Zhengqing then looked at Song Zhi beside him and asked nervously.
Song Zhi shook her head, her little face turned pale due to the pain of contractions, and beads of sweat on her forehead kept sliding down her cheeks.
Seeing this, Rong Zhengqing hurriedly called Nie Jinmei to stop.
The two of them worked together to send Song Zhi back to the room, and then they hurriedly took out all the things needed for delivery.
Fortunately, they had prepared these things a while ago.
The midwife arrived soon, and Rong Zhengqing took her directly to Song Zhi's room.
At this moment, Song Zhi was covered in sweat, and his face was even paler than before.
When Ran Qiu saw her like this, his heart suddenly rose to his throat. He subconsciously went into the room, but was stopped by Rong Zhengqing as soon as he reached the door.
"Teacher Ran, you can't go in."
Ran Qiu stood stiffly, but the worry in his eyes seemed to be overflowing.
"You and Jinmei should go and boil some hot water. We'll need a lot of it shortly." Rong Zhengqing could naturally see his worry, so he said again.
After Ran Qiu walked towards the kitchen, looking back every step of the way, Rong Zhengqing took a deep breath and walked into the room.
That night, this small detached courtyard house had been boiling water all night. At 3:30 in the morning, the cry of a baby resounded through the sky.
Ran Qiu and Nie Jinmei, who were standing nervously at the door, stood up at the same time.
After a while, when Rong Zhengqing pushed open the door to let the midwife out, he saw two people standing at the door.
"How is she?"
The two asked almost at the same time.
"She is fine, mother and child are safe." Rong Zhengqing said with a smile.
After hearing this, the two of them felt relieved after being worried all night.
"How heavy is the baby?" Nie Jinmei couldn't help but ask, thinking of Song Zhi's suppressed cry of pain that she had just heard at the door.
"Five pounds and two ounces, a beautiful baby." Rong Zhengqing said with a smile, "Come in and take a look."
Hearing this, the two of them couldn't wait to push the door open and walk into the house.
Rong Zhengqing handed a thick red envelope to the midwife: "Thank you for your hard work."
The midwife took the red envelope and squeezed it quietly. After feeling the thickness of the red envelope, she smiled and put it in her arms.
"It's not hard, it's not hard. The girl is strong and healthy, so the birth will go smoothly."
Rong Zhengqing escorted the midwife out of the hospital and handed her an even fatter red envelope: "We agreed before, please don't break your promise."
The midwife's eyes lit up when she saw the red envelope, which was obviously much thicker than the previous one, and she nodded hurriedly.
"Don't worry, young lady. After this, I will keep what happened tonight to myself and will never tell anyone."
"Okay." Rong Zhengqing suppressed the dark glint in his eyes and nodded. "Be careful on the road."
They had spent a long time selecting this midwife. She was not a gossipy person. Although they had called her over, they had not revealed her name and had given her enough hush money, so there shouldn't be any accidents.
The midwife left the yard under the cover of night.
When Rong Zhengqing returned to the house, he saw Ran Qiu standing at the door, not going in.
"Why don't you go in?" she asked curiously.
Ran Qiu shook his head and didn't say anything, but just kept looking into the house.
Rong Zhengqing walked into the room and saw Song Zhi holding a baby and feeding it. Only then did he understand why Ran Qiu didn't come in.
Song Zhi gave birth naturally for more than an hour, and it seemed as if all her strength was overdrawn.
She now desperately wanted to close her eyes and sleep forever.
But in order to feed Xiao Qingbai, she still forced herself to stay awake.
Nie Jinmei and Rong Zhengqing were both with her. After she finished feeding the baby, Rong Zhengqing took the child out of her arms.
"Have a good sleep, we are here for you."
Nie Jinmei also said quickly: "Yes, you have a good rest, we will take good care of the baby."
Song Zhi gave the two of them a weak look of gratitude, then closed his eyes and fell into a deep sleep.
Ran Qiu stood outside the door, listening to the crying of the baby coming from inside the house. His heart was filled with excitement. His hands hanging by his side were clenched into fists because of excitement. He was indescribably happy in his heart.
He didn't think that this child was from another man. He even inexplicably felt that the child was his and Song Zhi's.
In the future he will take care of the child with her.
In order to let Song Zhi sleep more comfortably, Rong Zhengqing took the child out.
"How is she? Is she okay?" Ran Qiu asked Song Zhi worriedly.
"It's okay, I'm just too tired. I've fallen asleep now."
After Rong Zhengqing finished speaking, he looked up at the blush on his pale face due to excitement, and couldn't help laughing.
She lowered her head and chuckled softly, then raised her head again to suppress the smile on her lips and said to Ran Qiu: "You should go and have a rest too."
Ran Qiu didn't respond, but just looked down at the child in her arms.
The child had just been born, nestling in Rong Zhengqing's arms like a small ball, looking soft and chubby, and was now staring at the world with curiosity.
Although he was just born, his eyes and eyebrows showed some resemblance to Song Zhi, which made people feel pity for him.
Ran Qiu just felt that the more he looked at this little guy, the more he liked him. An uncontrollable smile appeared on the corner of his mouth, and he couldn't help but speak to Rong Zhengqing.
"Can I hold him for a minute?"
Rong Zhengqing also saw that Ran Qiu really liked this child, so she smiled and nodded: "Of course, otherwise you have to be careful."
She gave him some instructions before carefully handing the child to him.
Unexpectedly, Ran Qiu was very skilled in holding the child. He held the child steadily in his arms and rocked him gently. After a while, the little baby, who had originally had his eyes wide open, slowly closed his eyes.
Hearing the soft breathing sounds coming from Ran Qiu's arms, Rong Zhengqing was surprised.
"Hey, you fell asleep so quickly." Nie Jinmei also looked at Ran Qiu with admiration and praised, "I didn't expect that Teacher Ran, you are also good at soothing babies."
"I held San Ya and the others in my arms when they were little." Ran Qiu said lightly.
Hearing this, Rong Zhengqing and Nie Jinmei remembered that he had raised three little ones.
Ran Qiu lowered his head to look at Naiwan who was lying obediently in his arms. His mood became excited again, and his eyes seemed to be filled with bright stars.
