Time quietly slipped into the autumn of 1976.
The harvest had just ended, and the grain had been handed over to the state. Everyone was happily waiting for their share of the grain in the threshing ground.
The harvest in the brigade has been getting better year by year. Every household not only has enough to eat, but even has surplus grain.
Grain is the lifeblood of farmers; the more the better. Everyone feels that life is getting better and better.
Two cars with Kyoto license plates entered the village ostentatiously. Everyone was busy working in the threshing ground, and even the children were playing there, so no one noticed the two cars entering the village at first.
It wasn't until the car arrived at the threshing ground that everyone saw it.
"Ah Yuan, Ah Yuan, hurry, a leader is looking for you."
When a car arrived, everyone's first reaction was that a leader was coming to see Lu Yuan, not that they were coming to see their captain.
Lu Yuan was carrying a pair of baskets, waiting to receive the grain, but the baskets were not filled with grain, but with a pair of adorable, snow-white baby babies.
The two babies, each with a little tuft of hair on their heads, sat obediently in the basket, their obsidian-like eyes darting around curiously, observing everything around them.
They are only six months old, and they don't get to play with their dad very often. Today, their dad managed to get them out without their eight older brothers, which took a lot of effort.
It was the first time the two little ones had seen so many people, but they weren't shy at all. They were so happy, grinning and giggling.
Hearing the shout, Lu Yuan turned around and saw two cars, raising an eyebrow.
Wow, what a high-ranking leader! There's a specific etiquette to the cars leaders use; each position is assigned a particular car.
Lu Yuan estimated that the person who came would be at least a minister-level official.
But were they really coming to see him? He hadn't received any prior notification from anyone who was coming to see him.
Could it be that they've come to the nursing home to visit those old men?
It's probably true.
Not wanting to entrust the two infants to anyone else, Lu Yuan carried the baskets himself to the car.
Who are you looking for?
A young man in his late twenties got out of the passenger seat of the first car. Seeing Lu Yuan surrounded by a group of villagers, he knew that Lu Yuan was in charge of the village and was probably a village cadre.
The man looked dignified and dressed appropriately, but the sight of him carrying a pair of small babies in a basket seemed rather incongruous.
Wow, what a beautiful baby!
The man's heart melted instantly upon seeing such a chubby, cute, and delicate doll for the first time.
Now I understand why this person used a basket to carry the two little babies wherever they went.
"Comrade, who are you looking for?"
Seeing that the man hadn't responded for a while and was only staring at Xiao Ba and Xiao Jiu, Lu Yuan raised his voice and asked again.
The young man snapped out of his daze, gave an embarrassed smile, and said, "I'm sorry, your two dolls are just too cute. I fell in love with them at first sight."
Lu Yuan smiled and said, "I understand. My child is good-looking, loved by everyone, and admired by all. Many people are like you."
"Hehe!" The man chuckled, having never seen such an unhumble person before.
"Comrade, I'd like to ask if your battalion commander is here?"
Huh? Weren't we going to a sanatorium?
Why isn't any commune leader with me when I'm looking for the brigade leader?
"Yes, just a moment," Lu Yuan said.
He turned around and casually gave an order, and several people rushed to call Lu Guoan.
Lu Yuan stayed behind and chatted with the group. In just a few words, he learned why they had come.
It turned out they were looking for the Wei family members at the cowshed.
The situation is better now; many people who were wronged in previous years, as well as highly educated intellectuals, have been exonerated one after another.
With the support of the Yu family in Kyoto, the Wei family's rehabilitation was expedited. The documents had already been issued, though not yet to the commune. However, people from Kyoto also came to personally inform the Wei family, mainly to offer condolences and reassurance.
Lu Yuan thought that Wei Fangxing, the eldest son of the Wei family, was probably going to be reinstated, otherwise the leaders wouldn't have made such a big fuss.
Not long after, Lu Guoqing rushed over.
He had already seen the car and knew that a leader had come. Over the years, many village leaders had come to see Lu Yuan, and he thought that this time it was the same as usual, so he sat there calmly distributing grain.
His first reaction upon hearing that his boss was looking for him was that he must have misheard. He checked twice before rushing over.
He stretched out a pair of large, calloused hands and said, "Hello, leader. You've worked hard, leader."
The man paused, smiled, and extended his hand to shake hands with him before explaining his purpose.
Lu Guoan was startled. The people who came looking for the cowshed?
Why would we need to talk to them?
In recent years, the higher-ups have ignored the people in the "cow sheds" (a metaphor for government-mandated labor camps), as if they've forgotten about them. Are they now remembering them and wanting to start educating them?
But this?
He looked at Lu Yuan, asking him with his eyes what to do.
Lu Yuan nodded to him, "Uncle, you should take the leaders there. It's a good thing that the leaders came to see them in person."
Lu Guoan immediately beamed with joy; it was good news!
He quickly gestured for them to come with him, saying, "Please come with me, leaders."
The man glanced at Lu Yuan; it turned out that this young man was the real person in charge of the village.
He smiled and said, "Captain, please wait a moment."
He then whispered a few words to the leaders in the two cars.
Soon, several cadres dressed in Lenin suits got out of the car, and the two drivers also got out. After getting out of the car, they hurriedly went to the trunk to get things.
Large and small bags, several bags in total.
They didn't plan to drive there, but instead got out of the car and walked with us. Lu Yuan knew that this was somewhat of a show.
But it doesn't matter, as long as the Wei family can return to the capital.
