The key she was referring to was the key to the outer room of the warehouse, not the key to the inner granary.
The key could have been given to the scorekeeper for safekeeping, as the scorekeeper also needed to keep and distribute farm tools, and it would have been convenient for him to have it.
Lu Guoan had no intention of letting Yang Caihong work as a points clerk long-term, so he didn't want her to keep the key. "You've all worked hard today. It's getting late. Why don't you go back to the educated youth settlement to rest? We can calculate the work points later anyway."
Lu Guoan still offered a few words of advice.
But you can't reason with a damned devil!
Yang Caihong had planned everything out, so how could she give up so easily? She was very persistent.
Lu Guoan sighed and left.
Suddenly, Yang Caihong was the only one left in the warehouse.
As soon as everyone left, she closed the doors and windows, quickly shoveled out the grain to weigh it. The scales were all there, and she weighed it quickly in several batches, exactly 60 jin (30 catties).
She was quite pleased with herself, feeling that her hands were a scale, and she thought she only needed to handle 50 or 60 jin of grain.
It's not that she didn't want to take more, it's just that there were too many to carry away, and there was nowhere to hide them when she got back. If it weighed 60 pounds, she could just lock it in the cabinet.
Because we needed to lock the door and return the key to the brigade leader later, the grain couldn't be kept inside; it had to be carried outside. We found a relatively secluded corner to put it away and covered it with straw, so that anyone passing by would only think it was a pile of hay.
After doing all this, she locked the warehouse door and headed towards the brigade leader's house.
When she returned the key and went back to the educated youth settlement, many people had finished eating and gone to bed. They were too tired to even wash up.
Only a few particularly clean-loving educated youth were still washing up despite being sleepy.
Hongxia was still awake. She was washing her face and body in the room with a basin of water when Yang Caihong banged on the door, which startled her.
Who is it?
"It's me, open the door quickly."
Hongxia then realized that this person had just returned.
"Wait a minute, I'm not available right now."
She took off all her clothes, but only wiped half of it.
"What's inconvenient about it? Are you hiding a man in the house?" Yang Caihong blurted out.
Hong Xia rolled her eyes. "Yang Caihong, I'm not the only female educated youth in the house. It's easy to spread rumors. I could also say that you came back so late because you were having a secret rendezvous with someone outside."
"You're talking nonsense. I came back late because of work. I'm the scorekeeper now, and I can't be careless at all when calculating everyone's work points. I've been working overtime to fulfill my duties, and you're still slandering me."
"Only officials are allowed to set fires, while common people are forbidden to light lamps. Who slandered whom first?"
Knowing she was in the wrong, Yang Caihong said nothing more.
"Alright, I was just joking. Open the door, I'm starving and need to get something to eat."
Everyone broke up early on, either cooking on their own or a few close friends teaming up together.
No one shared meals with her, so naturally no one saved food for her, and she had to cook for herself when she got back.
Hongxia, who was originally in a hurry to open the door for her, was no longer in a hurry and slowly wiped her body.
Yang Caihong was furious and pounded on the door loudly.
"Yang Zhiqing, please be quiet. Everyone has already gone to sleep." He Shenghua couldn't stand it anymore and came out to remind him.
Yang Caihong might not have listened to anyone else, but since it was He Shenghua, she reluctantly stopped and even took the opportunity to complain.
“He Zhiqing, look at Hongxia, she’s deliberately not opening the door for me.”
He Shenghua frowned. "Hongxia just said it's not convenient for you to wait right now, so please wait a little longer."
It's obvious what it's inconvenient for them to be doing inside right now; Yang Caihong is just looking for trouble.
Yang Caihong pursed her lips. Everyone else called her by her name, but she was called Yang Zhiqing (Educated Youth Yang). She thought to herself that once she brought back the grain, she could make a few steamed buns and send them to him. Would that make him less distant from her?
"Okay, I understand," she replied with a smile.
Hongxia tidied herself up before opening the door for her, took the water out to empty it, and then went to bed on the kang (heated brick bed).
Yang Caihong ate a quick bite and then sat on the kang (heated brick bed) to wait until everyone was asleep before going out to carry the grain back.
After only half an hour, she couldn't wait any longer, thinking that they must have all fallen asleep.
There's one more thing: she can't wait any longer, or she'll fall asleep.
She quietly got up and slipped out of the educated youth settlement. Hongxia, who had just fallen asleep, was still a light sleeper. She was awakened by the creaking of the door but didn't pay any attention, assuming that someone had gotten up in the middle of the night.
I waited for quite a while but no one came back, and I started to get a little impatient.
She has a quirk: she has to lock the door when she sleeps, otherwise she can't sleep soundly and is always worried that outsiders will come into the room.
I dazedly forced myself to stay awake, and I don't know how much time passed before I finally heard a faint sound again, which instantly snapped me back to reality.
Listening closely, I heard the sound of a lock being opened and a box being opened. My heart skipped a beat – had I been robbed?
Before she could react, she heard the front door being pounded on loudly.
"Open the door, open the door quickly."
Yang Caihong was startled. Who was coming in the middle of the night? Had they discovered her?
No, if we really found her, why didn't we catch her outside earlier?
Stay calm and don't scare yourself. Maybe someone has come to the educated youth settlement because something happened to them.
She hurriedly put the grain into the box, but the box was already full, and 60 jin of grain was quite a lot, so she had to take the grain out again, rummage through the contents of the box, and then put the grain in.
The items that had been taken out could not fit into the box. They managed to squeeze the money and other valuables inside, and the rest could only be placed on the kang (a heated brick bed).
