Yu Yuneng only managed to come to the Changhe Brigade half a month after his child was born.
This day happened to be the triplets' first birthday.
Nowadays, it's not appropriate to hold a large banquet for anything, even a joyous occasion like a wedding.
Lu Yuan didn't host a special banquet; he only invited Lu Guoan's family, Zhang Yong'an, Sun Maodou, Xu Dong and his granddaughter, He Shenghua and his wife, Yu Shaoheng's family, and Xiao Fan and other close relatives and friends to hold a simple first birthday celebration at home.
Yuan Ou was in her postpartum period, and Grandma Yu stayed at home to take care of her daughter-in-law and grandson. Yu Shaoheng and his father and grandfather came to visit.
"Hello, Grandpa Yu!"
"Oh, Uncle Yu, you're here too. When did you arrive? I didn't hear Aheng mention it."
Lu Yuan, holding Da Bao, greeted the Yu family at the gate of the courtyard.
Yu Yuneng said with a smile, "I just arrived today. I heard that Da Bao and the others are turning one year old today, so I came to join in the fun."
I was too embarrassed to say that I was just looking forward to a meal at the Lu family's house, and I came over before I even got a chance to sit down properly.
Lu Yuan smiled and said, "Welcome, welcome! Let's go inside quickly, dinner will be served in a little while."
Actually, there's still a while before dinner, so we'll hold a simple first birthday ceremony first.
The items for the baby's first birthday celebration had been prepared long ago.
Gao Weishan laid a mat on the floor of the main room, and on the mat, he laid a bright red bed sheet, on which were placed the items for the baby's first birthday celebration, three of each item.
There are bowls, chopsticks, spoons, books, pens, abacuses, seals, wooden guns, wooden swords, "Great Unity" (a traditional Chinese symbol of unity), herbs, etc., all arranged in order.
Everyone had arrived and was chatting happily while waiting for the baby's first birthday celebration.
Lu Yuan settled the three children on the mat and said to them, "See those toys over there? You three brothers will each choose your favorite toy, understand?"
The three little ones nodded obediently.
Lu Yuan patted their little bottoms one by one. The two babies crawled forward happily, but the third baby was unhappy about being patted on the bottom. He turned his head and glared at his father before slowly standing up and walking forward unhurriedly.
Da Bao and Er Bao stepped forward, looking at the dazzling array of toys, but instead of choosing one right away, they both turned to look at San Bao.
"Choose, choose."
Da Bao, with his little bottom sticking out, stood up and reached out to pull San Bao's hand so that he could choose first.
The adults found it fascinating, and Grandpa Yu praised, "Such a young child already knows how to give way to his younger brother, that's remarkable!"
Lu Yuanchao also praised, "Our Da Bao and Er Bao really act like older brothers."
“Da Bao and Er Bao are good older brothers,” Sun Maodou chimed in.
Xiao Fan was unhappy that everyone only praised Da Bao and Er Bao, saying, "San Bao is also a good younger brother."
Perhaps the praise didn't quite resonate with the three little ones, because they all frowned.
Erbao stuck out his little bottom, quickly got up, grabbed Sanbao's little hand, and said to everyone, "Brother, big brother."
No one paid any attention, assuming he was calling for Da Bao.
Da Bao also pulled San Bao and called out, "Big Brother."
Everyone laughed and corrected him, "Da Bao, you should call San Bao 'little brother'."
"Big brother," Da Bao protested.
“You are the eldest brother,” Yu Shaoheng said.
"Big brother!" Erbao cried out anxiously, his little face turning red.
"Hey, you guys don't want to be the older brother, you'd rather be the younger brother?" Lu Yuanchao thought it was great to be the older brother, since the younger brother had to listen to the older brother and was always being bullied by him.
Sanbao gently patted Erbao, signaling him not to rush, and said to everyone, word by word, "I am the eldest brother!"
He speaks much more fluently and clearly than Da Bao and Er Bao, and he also has a certain air about him.
Everyone was stunned, staring blankly at him.
It wasn't until he picked up the three seals on the ground, examined them, chose the one with his name on it, and put the other two back that everyone came to their senses.
Hong Xia asked in confusion, "Mo Xue, did we mistake him for someone else? I remember that the one without a mole on his eyebrow is Sanbao, why does he say it's Dabao?"
Wen Moxue and Lu Yuan exchanged a glance, both of them at a loss for words.
“You’re not mistaken, but Sanbao prefers to be the eldest brother.”
Lu Yuan shrugged and said, "Whatever, let Sanbao be the eldest brother if he wants to."
The couple had long realized that Sanbao wanted to legitimately make Dabao and Erbao listen to him, and they had been guiding the two older brothers to call him "Big Brother" all along.
Since he wants to take on the responsibility of being the leader, what's wrong with letting him be the eldest brother? There's no need to correct him.
After hearing the couple's explanation, everyone praised Sanbao for being clever.
Seeing that he had chosen a seal, Old Master Yu laughed heartily, "This little fellow wants to pursue a career in government."
Lu Yuan quickly replied, "Hehe, what does a little kid like him know? He's just playing with it like a toy."
The "first birthday celebration" is a ritual with a symbolic meaning, and it can also be seen as an elder's hope for the future of the younger generation. However, many people still believe that what the child grabs represents their own future.
Lu Yuan didn't take it completely seriously.
After Sanbao chose the seal, Dabao and Erbao also began to choose what they liked.
Without hesitation, Da Bao grabbed the three large banknotes and gave one to each of Er Bao and San Bao.
"Haha, good, good, good! Da Bao will never have to worry about money for the rest of his life!" Grandma Xu said with a smile.
The others also praised him for a long time, saying that he was kind and respectful to his brothers and knew how to share with them.
Erbao looked around at the things on the ground, and finally grabbed a wooden gun in one hand and a wooden sword in the other.
"Wow, Erbao wants to be a policeman in the future! That's great!" Sun Maodou exclaimed excitedly.
Actually, what excited him wasn't what Erbao could do in the future, but rather that the things Erbao grabbed were things he had brought with him—the wooden gun and the wooden sword were made by his father from discarded and surplus wood.
