Lu Guoan's mother slapped her thigh.
"Oh dear, so that's what this wicked woman surnamed Zhang was planning. She's jealous that her nephew's wife's family sent her a lot of good things, and she wants to use these leaders to steal them."
Upon hearing this, those watching the commotion inside and outside the courtyard suddenly realized what was going on.
"So that's how it is. I really thought A-Yuan and his educated youth wife were hiding something shady."
"Hey, I think the young couple secretly hid the good things sent by the wife's family. Since the stepmother couldn't get them, she came up with this dirty trick."
Some people don't understand, "What's the point of coming up with such a dirty trick? If no contraband is found, the good stuff and money sent by the bride's family can't be confiscated, and it's even less likely to end up in the stepmother's hands."
Someone explained, "You don't understand. Once the goods and money have been properly distributed, how can the parents refuse to give them what they want? You can't make excuses like 'we don't have any.'"
"Sigh, I used to think Zhang Yuping was a good stepmother, but now it seems she's really vicious."
"Who can argue with that!"
Zhang Yuping was furious when she heard these comments.
She can't let the good image she's worked so hard to build over the years be ruined like this.
She said, "You're really wronging me by saying that. I've worked so hard to raise my children. What good things would they have to give me as a filial son? There's no need for them to go through all this trouble. I only stood up to report them because I saw that they had made a mistake."
Then she said righteously, "Let the leaders go in and search the house. If they don't find anything, I will kneel down and apologize to the young couple."
She didn't know if Wen Moxue had hidden anything, but she knew they would definitely find something today.
Seeing her so confident look, Lu Yuan began to have doubts. Was she really framing him?
He looked at Wen Moxue again, and she shook her head slightly at him, which made him feel a little more at ease.
"If nothing is found, then kneeling down to apologize is unnecessary. But this matter cannot be let off so easily; there can't be no punishment at all. Otherwise, people will follow suit and anyone can report others at will."
“Yeah, there’s no punishment at all. I’ll report anyone I don’t like from now on,” Wen Muxue chimed in.
"What do you want?" Sun Changsheng asked.
Lu Yuan shrugged. "We didn't intend to do anything. What do you leaders think should be done in this situation?"
He passed the buck to the three members of the Revolutionary Committee.
The leader of the three said, "If we really can't find anything, we'll take the person who reported us back for education and criticism."
Lu Yuan nodded in satisfaction.
Zhang Yuping readily agreed, "Okay, no problem."
She wasn't afraid at all; they were bound to find something today.
The group of people at the door made way, and three members of the Revolutionary Committee rushed in first.
Lu Yuan and Wen Moxue also entered the room, and Zhang Yuping and Sun Changsheng couldn't wait to squeeze in as well.
The room was small, and it already felt crowded with just a few people inside. The others could only crane their necks to look inside from the outside.
There weren't many things in the room; you could see the whole thing at a glance.
Even those outside the door could see it clearly.
The brand-new enamel basins, enamel mugs, towels, soap, and thermos flasks left everyone speechless.
These are things that only city people would use; very few families in the countryside have such nice things.
The three members of the Revolutionary Committee were relatively polite today and did not smash things indiscriminately.
After searching around and finding nothing suspicious, they looked at the two boxes.
Lu Yuan's box wasn't locked, so someone opened it and threw the contents onto the kang (a heated brick bed) one by one.
Zhang Yuping showed a smug look the moment she opened the trunk, but as one piece of clothing after another was thrown out, her expression became increasingly strange.
In the end, the boxes were all empty; there was nothing but some old clothes and bedding thrown out.
"Open the lock."
The leader of the Revolutionary Committee pointed to another large wooden box and said.
Wen Moxue pouted, looking unwilling.
“My trunk is full of valuables, including food and money.”
Lu Yuan pretended to reassure them, "Don't worry, the three leaders are only looking for contraband; they won't ask for our food or money."
Wen Moxue nodded solemnly, "I understand."
The three members of the Revolutionary Committee overheard the conversation between the two and snorted disdainfully.
They're not naive people; how could they possibly covet a little bit of food and money from someone else's home?
But when Wen Moxue opened the large wooden box and saw what was inside, she couldn't help but swallow hard.
What kind of family has so many refined grains and non-staple foods?
When they found several hundred yuan and a stack of various receipts, their eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
"Where did these things come from?" the Revolutionary Committee member asked.
Wen Moxue replied, "When I went to the countryside, my family and relatives gave me a lot of money and coupons. Later, my family would send me money and coupons and things every month."
"Were they all sent from home?"
The Revolutionary Committee members didn't quite believe that a single household could send so many things over.
"Yes, you can check at the post office if you don't believe me."
She wasn't lying; she wasn't afraid of being investigated at all.
Indeed, many people in her family send her things every month.
Her parents, brother, and even her two uncles and several cousins would send her things. She received quite a few things every month.
Hearing her say that, the members of the Revolutionary Committee stopped pressing the issue and began to believe her.
"We'll go to the post office to verify it later."
Having found nothing, the group looked at Zhang Yuping.
