Chapter 38 Grandpa Liu's condition suddenly improved again.

“Uncle Wang, I’ve seen how hard you’ve been helping me deliver bricks and tiles these past two days, and I’ll remember your kindness,” Lu Yuan continued.

"You can't refuse, this rabbit is a small token of my appreciation."

"If you want to eat it again, just tell me and I'll go up the mountain to get it."

The last sentence implies a desire for frequent visits; it remains to be seen how Wang Fengnian will respond.

These words were beautifully spoken, making Wang Fengnian feel both comfortable and moved.

Although delivering bricks and tiles is his job, he was extremely happy to receive recognition and gratitude from others, and this was the first time he had ever received such a thing.

He accepted the rabbit, and in his heart, he also decided that Lu Yuan was a person worth befriending.

"Okay, thank you, Uncle. If you ever need anything from me, just come to me. You can also bring your wife to my house to get acquainted with the place when you're not busy."

This means agreeing to frequent visits.

Lu Yuan's smile widened. "Alright, Uncle Wang, once my house is finished, I'll bring my wife to invite you and your aunt over for a housewarming party."

After Lu Yuan followed the tractor to the abandoned house and unloaded the bricks and tiles, he stayed there to work.

It's not good if you don't live there since you built the house yourself.

I didn't get home until I finished work in the evening, dragging my tired body.

Wen Moxue had already prepared the meal and was waiting for it.

"Go wash your hands first, then go back inside to eat."

After the food was prepared, she brought it back to their own room. Since she wasn't working, she always used the kitchen in front of Lu Xiaofang and Lu Xiaoqin, leaving the kitchen full of delicious aromas for them, which almost made the three siblings drool.

Lu Guoqing wasn't much better off; he was still holding back his anger.

Thinking that he was the father, and that he had even helped repair the house these past two days, yet they hadn't brought him any treats as a sign of respect, he was furious.

This son has been raised in vain.

Lu Yuan went outside, washed his hands, took a shower, and changed into clean clothes before going back inside to eat.

In the evening, Wen Moxue cooked rice directly and picked green peppers from the vegetable garden to make a stir-fried pork dish.

I also made a vegetable and egg soup.

Two simple dishes, yet they are quite sumptuous in this day and age.

Lu Yuan didn't ask where the meat came from. Wen Moxue offered to explain herself.

“My family sent me meat coupons, and today I went to the commune and bought several pounds of meat, rendered some lard, and also got quite a bit of cracklings.”

Lu Yuan glanced at her and said jokingly, "I'm so lucky to have married you."

Wen Moxue glared at him, "Can't you talk seriously for once?"

"What's wrong with me? I'm just telling the truth."

Wen Moxue choked, realizing that what he said was indeed true.

But something still felt very wrong.

Lu Yuan didn't want her to dwell on this issue, so he changed the subject.

"Your family seems to treat you very well, so why did they let you go to the countryside?"

When this was mentioned, Wen Moxue's pretty face immediately twisted, as if she had thought of something unpleasant.

She pursed her lips and murmured softly, "A twist of fate."

Lu Yuan glanced at her. Was there a story behind this?

However, seeing that the other person didn't want to talk about it, he didn't press the matter further.

Wen Moxue took a couple of bites of rice, her expression softening as she began to talk about her family.

“My parents, brother, and uncle’s family all love me very much. When they first heard that I was going to the countryside, they were reluctant to let me go and prepared a lot of good things for me, which I couldn’t possibly bring with me. Now they have to send me a little bit every month.”

"No wonder you have so many good things and never lack food or supplies."

Wen Moxue's eyes flickered upon hearing this. In this day and age, who doesn't lack supplies?

She's just a special case.

Seemingly missing her family, Wen Moxue's eyes actually reddened.

"Missing home?" Lu Yuan asked.

Wen Moxue sniffed and nodded, "A little."

"When I left, my mother cried her eyes out. Her health wasn't good to begin with, and I don't know how she is now."

Lu Yuan comforted her, "You don't lack food or drink anyway. If you don't want to work in the future, you don't have to. In a while, we'll move to the new house. You can live very comfortably in the countryside. Write to your family and your mother won't worry about you anymore."

Wen Moxue nodded, "Yes, I sent a letter home today, telling them about the situation and assuring them that I'm doing well."

Lu Yuan suddenly asked, "Have you told them you're marrying me?"

"Of course not."

However, the tone of that urgent denial sounded like a blatant attempt to cover something up.

Wen Moxue glared at him, "Who married you? We're not a real couple."

Lu Yuan grinned. "Yeah, it's fake."

"It's good that you didn't say anything. From what you've said, your family spoils you a lot. I'm worried that if you told them you were getting married, they'd probably send someone over to beat me up."

Wen Moxue burst out laughing.

"Don't worry, Hangzhou is more than 2,000 kilometers away from here, it's not easy for them to come here."

Lu Yuan finished the last drop of soup in the bowl and got up to clear the dishes.

"I'm not at ease with that. I'll treat you better now so I'll feel more confident if your family comes."

Wen Moxue chuckled at his teasing, knowing that he was just making up an excuse to wash the dishes.

I was originally going to volunteer to wash the dishes, but I'm too lazy to do it now.

"It's no use if you're good today; it would be better if you did this every day from now on."

Lu Yuan had no objection. "Sure, from now on you cook and I'll wash the dishes, every day like this."

He then carried the bowls and chopsticks out in a serving dish.

Wen Moxue watched his departing figure with a smile, and suddenly felt that spending her life with such a man might not be so bad.
