Chapter 39 Lure the snake out of its hole

Lu Yuan chewed on a cornbread, mumbling indistinctly, "It smells so good!"

"My wife's corn pancakes are so delicious. They're made with flour and eggs, and fried in lard."

"Tsk, this is delicious!"

"You son of a bitch."

The old man swallowed hard again, silently cursing in his heart like the village women.

After finishing one cornbread, Lu Yuan wrapped the remaining two in oil paper again.

"Grandpa, did you hear about the big thing that happened in our brigade a few days ago?"

He spoke casually, as if chatting with an old acquaintance.

"You know about this, right? Someone was having an affair and was caught by Grandpa Liu from our village. Those two guys almost beat Grandpa Liu to death."

The old man remained silent, quietly cleaning the cowshed.

Lu Yuan observed his expression, then moved closer again and stuffed the oil paper package in his hand directly into his trouser pocket.

The old man froze, then reached out to return it to him.

Lu Yuan grabbed him and said, "Grandpa, I just want to ask, when exactly did the brigade leader come to drive the oxcart that day?"

He didn't ask this question before because he felt it was unnecessary, but now that he's suspected someone surnamed Sun, he needs to get to the bottom of it.

The old man's body visibly trembled, and he hurriedly replied, "I don't know."

As she spoke, she struggled to return the items to him.

Lu Yuan held his hand firmly and smiled knowingly.

"have no idea?"

How could he not know?

It's only been a few days. Even if you can't remember clearly, it's impossible that you don't know.

"Don't worry, even if you tell me, I won't tell anyone."

The old man remained unmoved and continued to struggle.

Lu Yuan refused.

After a few exchanges, they managed to pin the person to the ground.

What are you doing?

At a shout, both of them stopped what they were doing.

Lu Yuan glanced back, stood up, dusted himself off, and said nonchalantly,

"Oh, it's the brigade leader. You've come at the right time. I need to borrow an oxcart, but this old man absolutely refuses. I was thinking of beating him up and he'll behave."

As he spoke, he even made a gesture of clenching his fist, as if he was about to hit someone again.

"Stop!" Sun Changsheng shouted sternly.

She glanced at him sideways, frowned, and lectured him.

“The team can only borrow oxcarts for the team’s own purposes. You don’t do anything worthwhile all day, and you even want to mess with the team’s oxcarts. If you continue to be so irresponsible, I will gather the whole village to educate and criticize you.”

Lu Yuan waved his hand dismissively, "Don't be like that, Captain. It's just an oxcart, if you don't want to lend it, then don't."

He then turned and walked away, spitting as he did so.

"Pah, who cares? I'll have my wife buy me a bicycle someday. Whoever wants to ride this old oxcart can ride it."

Sun Changsheng was furious; his brows were so furrowed they could have trapped a fly.

Staring at Lu Yuan's back, she found him increasingly irritating.

He turned to look at the old man still lying on the ground and said impatiently,

"Go and harness the oxcart."

The old man shakily got up, worried that people would see his bulging pockets, so he pressed his hands to his pockets and limped to hitch up the oxcart.

Sun Changsheng didn't care, assuming that Lu Yuan had injured the man's leg. He urged him on and went out of the cowshed to wait on the main road outside.

Hmph, if it weren't for his son recently taking the family bicycle to school, he wouldn't need to use an oxcart every time he goes to the commune.

Lu Yuan staggered toward the commune, a blade of grass dangling from his mouth and two more in his hands, whipping at the wild trees and grasses along the roadside as he went.

Sun Changsheng drove by in his oxcart and gave him a disdainful look.

With a flick of the whip, he increased his speed.

Seeing this, Lu Yuan waved and called out, "Captain, wait a minute. You're going to the commune, right? Give me a ride."

Sun Changsheng acted as if he couldn't hear him and continued to wield the bullwhip.

Lu Yuan threw away the foxtail grass in his mouth and hand and began to chase after the oxcart.

He ran much faster than the oxcart and quickly caught up.

With a light leap, he was on the oxcart.

Sun Changsheng felt the oxcart shake slightly, but he only thought it was because the road was bad and the oxcart was too bumpy.

They drove the oxcart very fast.

Ha, he doesn't want to take that bastard Lu Yuan along.

After a while, he slowed down and turned around triumphantly.

This almost scared the soul out of him.

"Ah, you, you, you..."

How exactly did this person get onto the oxcart?

Lu Yuan grinned, revealing a set of bright white teeth.

Imitating him, "Ah, I, I, I..."

Sun Changsheng was both ashamed and angry. "Get out of here!"

Lu Yuan simply lay sprawled out on the oxcart.

"Captain, that's not right of you. There are rules in the team that prohibit borrowing oxcarts for personal use, but there's no rule that says you can't ride in an oxcart even if you're going the same way."

Sun Changsheng was so angry he couldn't utter a word.

If we don't let this shameless person sit, he might say even more offensive things.

He could only purse his lips, his face grim, and continue driving the oxcart.

Lu Yuan lay on the oxcart, legs crossed. He asked loudly,

"Captain, what are you doing at the commune today?"

Sun Changsheng ignored him.

Lu Yuan immediately guessed, "Could it be that she's going to see my stepmother like me?"

Sun Changsheng paused in his whipping motion. Instead of answering, he asked, "Are you going to see your stepmother?"

Lu Yuan jumped up and sat down next to him, saying mysteriously,

"Captain, to tell you the truth, I actually went to the police station."

Sun Changsheng was startled and asked, "What are you doing at the police station?"

Lu Yuan replied, "I've been thinking about this a lot these past few days, and I keep feeling like the person I saw having an affair with that day looked a lot like my stepmother and..."

He deliberately dragged out his words, not saying them for a long time.

Sun Changsheng gripped the bullwhip tighter and tighter, his forehead already beaded with sweat.

He asked eagerly, "With whom?"

Lu Yuan observed his expression without revealing his feelings, and his suspicions became even more certain.

He had already decided that since there was no new evidence to find the murderer, the only option was to lure him out.

He pretended to be deep in thought, then patted the other person on the shoulder and said loudly,

"Speaking of which, that person's build is somewhat similar to yours, Captain."

Sun Changsheng was startled by his sudden slap.

Before I could even recover, what he said made me feel terrible.

I almost fainted.

Did they recognize them?

"Nonsense!" he shouted angrily, trying to appear calm.

Lu Yuan cooperated by shaking his head and patting his chest.

"Captain, why are you so agitated? I didn't say it was you, I only said it looked like you."

Sun Changsheng calmed himself down. "You can eat whatever you want, but you can't say whatever you want."

Lu Yuan waved his hand casually, "I know, otherwise I would have been shouting it from all over the place, instead of secretly telling you."

"Besides, you weren't in the village that day, so of course I knew that person couldn't be you."

"I just think that when we look for that man in the future, we can compare him to your physique, Captain."

Hearing him say that, Sun Changsheng secretly breathed a sigh of relief, and his heart finally settled down.
