Chapter 14: Full of Twists and Turns

Lu Yuan felt that today was probably going to be a terrible day, and he was likely to lose his life here.

His fake wife is really going to get a reputation for being a jinx.

My heart is ice-cold.

The herd of wild boars below has arrived at the center of the battle and is helping their companions fight the bear.

Seeing that they lacked sportsmanship and were ganging up on the few, the bear finally snapped.

He took random photos of the injured wild boar.

Soon the wild boar twitched a few times, grunted twice, and died.

The bear, attacked by several wild boars, didn't last long before it also died.

The wild boars avenged their companion and then ignored it, turning instead to root around in the military water bottles on the ground.

Suddenly, the largest wild boar grabbed the water bottle and ran off, with the rest of the wild boars in hot pursuit.

As soon as the wild boar ran away, the pack of wolves howled and gave chase.

The other animals followed behind, even the little rabbits hopped and skipped along, unafraid of being mistaken for prey and swallowed whole by the wolf cubs.

Lu Yuan: ?

These wild animals all seemed to be after the military water bottle.

Why?

Thirsty?

Still lacking toys?

Well, that all sounds like nonsense.

Lu Yuan decided to put aside his incomprehension for the time being and focus on how to safely descend the mountain.

Looking down at the surroundings to make sure the dangerous animals were gone, he then looked at the dead wild boar and bear on the ground.

Damn, it was a false alarm.

I thought I wouldn't be able to go back today, but things took an unexpected turn for the better.

This series of twists and turns, with his emotions rising and falling, almost gave him a heart attack.

He leaned on a tree branch and began to plan what to do next.

The wild boar was quite large, weighing around 300 jin (approximately 150 catties). It could easily fetch two or three hundred yuan on the black market.

The bear looked bigger than a wild boar, probably weighing close to 400 pounds.

This isn't even a big one; a big bear can weigh seven or eight hundred pounds.

Lu Yuan thought that if he could get this bear down the mountain, he could probably get four or five hundred yuan.

Those bear paws and bear gallbladders are rare and valuable items; they could easily sell for over a hundred yuan.

If you sell over 300 jin of meat by weight, it should sell for over 300 yuan.

But all of this is on the premise that he gets those two big guys down the mountain.

He's all alone now, and he can't even manage one end, let alone both.

After thinking it over, he decided to cut off four bear paws to take back first, and then call a few reliable people to help carry the prey.

After double-checking that it was safe, he nimbly climbed down the tree and chopped off four large bear paws. Then he pushed the wild boar and the bear with its severed limbs into the trap, covering them with branches and dry leaves.

He made another mark before quickly running down the mountain with the bear paw and machete.

By this time, it was almost dark.

He was as fast as a cheetah in the forest.

Lu Yuan was also a little anxious. He had to find someone to help him get the prey down the mountain as soon as possible, otherwise the smell of blood would attract other prey, and all his hopes would be wasted.

By the time he ran down the mountain, drenched in sweat, it was already completely dark.

Fortunately, the moon was bright tonight, and its light shone down, making the road bright and clear.

"Knock knock—"

"who?"

Lu Yuan smiled, his fake wife responding as soon as he knocked on the gate.

The sound was clearly coming from the courtyard.

It seemed she was worried that he wouldn't hear the knocking immediately if he was inside, so she waited for him in the yard.

"It's me."

The courtyard gate creaked open from the inside.

"You're finally back."

The girl's pretty face was full of joy, and her big, watery eyes were especially bright and moist under the moonlight, just like the stars in the sky.

Lu Yuan's heart skipped a beat, and he coughed lightly.

"Let's go inside first and talk about it."

The two entered the room, and Wen Moxue rustled around, found some matches, and lit the kerosene lamp.

Even in the dim light, one could clearly see the man's disheveled appearance.

"Did you catch your prey?"

Lu Yuan found a snakeskin bag and put the four bear paws inside.

He then replied, "It's still up in the mountains, I can't get it back. I'll go find someone to help."

Pointing to the snakeskin bag, he instructed, "Hide this well, lock the door, and get some rest. I probably won't be back tonight."

He turned to leave, but Wen Moxue quickly called out to him.

Are you hungry? Would you like something to eat?

Lu Yuan had no appetite at all; all he could think about were those two big guys.

"Need not."

Wen Moxue climbed onto the kang (a heated brick bed), pulled something out from under a pile of clothes, and handed it to her.

"Take it."

Lu Yuan thought it was food, but when he looked down, he realized it was a flashlight.

This girl has quite a few good things.

These days, if a household has a flashlight, it's considered a rare and precious electrical appliance.

He took it; having this thing would make going into the mountains at night much more convenient.

Thanks.

He went to Lu Guoan's house first.

Although Lu Guoan was his cousin, he cared for him more than his own father.

The reason he was approached today to discuss the division of the family business is for this very reason.

Throughout his childhood, this was one of the few people who consistently showed him kindness.

"Uncle, I need your help with something."

"What happened? Tell me."

Lu Guoan had already gone to bed, but he came out to open the door wearing only a coat.

In an era with little entertainment, the only form of entertainment for adults was to get up on the kang (a heated brick bed) as soon as it got dark and find something to amuse themselves.

Lu Yuan lowered his voice, "Uncle, I got two big guys on the mountain, and I can't get them down by myself. I'd like to ask you for help."
