At dawn, sunlight, like golden threads, pierced through the thin clouds, gently illuminating every inch of the educated youth dormitory area and the entire village. That ray of sunlight, like a tender caress of nature, added a warm and hopeful touch to this place gradually coming back to life through transformation. After several days of concerted effort, the educated youth dormitory had been completely transformed. The clean environment seemed to be the prelude to a new life, and the villagers were filled with enthusiasm for improving their quality of life. This enthusiasm, like a small, burning flame, flickered in everyone's eyes.
Standing in front of the educated youth dormitory, Lin Yue's gaze swept over the clean courtyard and newly renovated houses, her heart filled with satisfaction. However, she knew this was just the beginning; to truly improve everyone's quality of life, changing hygiene habits was crucial. After careful consideration, she and Chen Yu decided to gather the villagers and educated youth for a lecture on hygiene. This decision was like a pebble thrown into a calm lake, creating ripples in their hearts. They were filled with anticipation and a touch of nervousness, hoping to bring positive changes to the village, yet worried that the villagers would find it difficult to accept these new ideas.
The news spread like wildfire throughout the village. Villagers, filled with curiosity, doubt, and a touch of anticipation, gathered around the ancient locust tree in the center of the village. The old locust tree, like a kind old man, had witnessed the village's changing times. Its thick trunk and lush branches swayed gently in the breeze, rustling softly as if whispering a welcome. In the open space beneath the tree, a slightly rough table and several oddly shaped stools were set up—Lin Yue's "stage" for the day, embodying her hope to spread knowledge.
Lin Yue stood before the table, watching the villagers and educated youth arrive one after another, her heart pounding like a deer. Her gaze swept across the crowd, each familiar and simple face filled with curiosity about the unknown. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. Chen Yu stood beside her, nodding slightly and giving Lin Yue an encouraging look. That look was like a steadfast lighthouse, guiding her through the turbulent sea of tension, telling her, "You can do it, I'm here for you."
When the crowd had gathered enough, Lin Yue cleared her throat again, her clear voice breaking the noise: "Hello everyone, I've gathered you all here today to talk about the importance of hygiene. As we can all see, our village has been working hard to improve our living environment recently, which is a great start. But you may not know that, in addition to the external environment, our own hygiene habits also have a huge impact on our health."
As soon as Lin Yue finished speaking, a murmur arose from the crowd. An elderly villager with gray hair and a wrinkled face frowned, his eyes filled with deep doubt. He asked loudly, "Lin Yue, our ancestors have lived like this in this village for generations, and we've never seen anything wrong with it. Is this hygiene habit you're talking about really that important? How useful is it?" His voice, weathered by time, echoed in the air, and the surrounding villagers nodded in agreement, clearly sharing the same question.
Lin Yue smiled at the old man, her eyes full of patience: "Grandpa, you see, in our daily lives, there are actually many things around us that we can't see with the naked eye. These things are like little monsters hiding in the dark, and they may quietly make us sick. For example, sometimes we get a fever or cough for no reason. Many times it's because we've come into contact with these bad things without realizing it, and not paying attention to hygiene will make these things more likely to harm us."
As she spoke, Lin Yue picked up a basin of water and a bar of soap from the table and began to demonstrate the correct way to wash hands. She first soaked her hands in the water, then picked up the soap and carefully applied it to her hands, from palms to backs of hands, and then to the spaces between each finger and fingertip. While rubbing, she explained in detail: “Look, when you wash your hands, you must do it like this, making sure to wash every part thoroughly, especially after we finish working, when our hands are covered in dirt; also, before eating, we need to wash away any germs that may be on our hands, otherwise they will go into our stomachs with the food; and also, if we come into contact with a sick person, we must wash our hands even more thoroughly, because germs on a sick person can easily remain on our hands. Washing your hands carefully like this can wash away as many harmful substances as possible, reducing the chances of getting sick.”
The villagers watched Lin Yue's demonstration intently, their doubts lingering. A little boy with two braids ran out with a grin, saying in a childish voice, "Sister Lin, I always wash my hands quickly. It's so troublesome to scrub like you do, and my hands don't even look dirty." Lin Yue went over, squatted down, and gently patted the child's head. "Little one," she said, "you can't think like that. We can't see those bad things with our eyes, like tiny bugs that hide on our hands. If you don't wash them clean, they'll sneak into your stomach and make you sick. Being sick is awful! You won't be able to play happily like you are now, and you'll cough and have a fever. Do you want that?" The child's eyes widened, and he quickly shook his head, seemingly already imagining the pain of being sick.
Besides washing hands, Lin Yue then began explaining the importance of ventilation. She stood up, walked to the middle of the crowd, and scanned everyone with her eyes: "Think about it, if we always keep the doors and windows of our houses closed, the air inside will become very bad. Just like if we stay in a stuffy and cramped room for a long time, don't we feel dizzy and uncomfortable? That's because the air in the room is not fresh. Regular ventilation allows fresh air to come in and drives out the dirty air, so we are less likely to get sick."
