Chapter 18 A New Challenge - The Outbreak of Disease

Lin Yue took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She carefully examined the patient's symptoms again, asking the family about the patient's activities and diet before the onset of the illness. The family members surrounded Lin Yue, talking amongst themselves, their faces filled with fear. An elderly man grabbed Lin Yue's arm, his hand trembling slightly with tension, his voice trembling with tears: "Lin Yue, my wife was fine yesterday, and today she's like this, what are we going to do? She's so young, and the children are still so small." Tears welled up in his cloudy eyes, threatening to spill over at any moment.

Lin Yue patted the old man's hand, her eyes filled with sympathy and comfort: "Grandpa, don't worry too much. We will do our best to find the cause of the illness and cure them. Think carefully, has she been in contact with anything unusual or gone to any unusual places recently? Even the smallest detail may be helpful to us."

The old man tried hard to recall, his brow furrowed and his eyes filled with confusion: "Nothing special, she was just working in the village, just like usual. She hadn't been in contact with any outsiders, so how could this suddenly happen?"

As Lin Yue listened, she rapidly analyzed the various possibilities in her mind. Her brain was like a high-speed machine, constantly sifting through information. Just then, Chen Yu arrived with Captain Li. Captain Li was a burly man, usually with a stern expression, but now his face was filled with anxiety. Looking at the patient on the bed, he anxiously asked, "Lin Yue, how is the situation? Is it really an infectious disease?"

Lin Yue said solemnly, "It's not certain yet, but the possibility is high. We need to prepare for the worst and first place these patients in one place to prevent them from coming into contact with other villagers, so as to avoid more people being infected. Time is of the essence, and we must act as soon as possible."

Captain Li nodded immediately, a resolute glint in his eyes: "Alright, I'll arrange for the villagers to vacate an empty room as a temporary isolation ward." He then turned and went out to organize the villagers. Everyone worked together, some moving beds, others carrying patients, carefully transferring them to the isolation ward. During the transfer, the patient's pained appearance and weakened state caused everyone great distress. A young villager, while carrying the patient, accidentally bumped the patient's arm. The patient let out a painful groan, and the young villager's face turned deathly pale, his eyes filled with terror. He feared he too would contract this terrible disease.

Lin Yue was busy in the isolation ward, like a commander on a battlefield, exhausted but full of fighting spirit. She fed water to the patients, the water flowing slowly down the spoon into their chapped lips like sweet rain nourishing parched land. She gently wiped their bodies with damp towels, trying to lower their body temperature, each wiping motion filled with tenderness and care. At the same time, she was carefully observing changes in the patients' symptoms, every subtle change could be a key clue to finding the cause of the illness. Her eyes never left the patients, her focused gaze seemingly trying to see through them.

As time went on, more villagers developed the same symptoms. A heavy gloom seemed to hang over the entire village, and fear spread like wildfire through their hearts. Those who hadn't yet shown symptoms gathered in the village square, whispering amongst themselves, their eyes filled with unease. A young mother clutched her child tightly, her body trembling slightly, her eyes wide with terror: "What kind of disease is this? Will it be contagious? What if my child gets it?" She held her child even tighter, as if that would protect her from the disease.

An old man leaned on a cane, his face covered in wrinkles that seemed to have been etched by time. He said worriedly, "I've heard this disease is really fierce. Many people have fallen ill. What are we going to do? Will we all die?" His voice, tinged with despair, echoed in the air, making the surrounding villagers even more fearful.

Lin Yue knew that if the illness wasn't controlled quickly, the consequences would be unimaginable. She decided to conduct a simple examination of the patient's blood and excrement. Although resources were limited, she hoped to find some clues. In the makeshift clinic, she carefully conducted the examination using only the available tools and her own knowledge. Her eyes were focused and determined. Despite her inner anxiety, she knew she couldn't panic at this moment; she was the villagers' last hope. She was like an explorer groping in the dark, not letting go of any possible clue.

Chen Yu stayed by Lin Yue's side, assisting her like a steadfast pillar, silently supporting her. Looking at Lin Yue's weary yet resilient figure, he felt both heartache and admiration. He quietly prepared what Lin Yue needed, passing her tools; the two understood each other without words, a single glance enough. Their tacit understanding was like an invisible key, unlocking the door to hope in the fight against illness.

During the examination, Lin Yue discovered some abnormal cells in the patient's blood, but she wasn't sure if this was the cause of the illness. Her brow furrowed deeper, and a hint of confusion appeared in her eyes. She decided to first use some antipyretics and anti-inflammatory drugs based on her experience to alleviate the patient's symptoms. At the same time, she asked the villagers to collect some common herbs and try to brew some medicine, hoping it would help with the condition. She described the appearance and names of the herbs to the villagers in detail, and the villagers immediately sprang into action, searching for the herbs in every corner of the village.
