Chapter 20: The Epidemic Prevention Campaign Begins

The morning sun, with its cold hue, pierced through the thin clouds, casting its rays like sharp swords across the village. The rows of white lime markers, gleaming in the sunlight, resembled scars etched into the earth, relentlessly revealing the village's dire situation. A new day should have been a start full of hope and vitality, but the village seemed shrouded in a thick gloom, devoid of its usual life, only a tense, almost frozen atmosphere weighing heavily on the hearts of every villager.

Lin Yue stood in the open space in the center of the village, like a weary yet resolute lighthouse. Her eyes, bloodshot from a sleepless night, were fiery red, yet radiated an unwavering determination, her gaze like the brightest star in the night sky, guiding the villagers in the darkness. Beside her stood Chen Yu and Captain Li, their expressions equally solemn; they were like three solid pillars, supporting the villagers' faltering hopes. Around them, villagers wearing simple masks gathered, those masks, though crude and rudimentary, now serving as a vital line of defense against the disease.

Lin Yue took a deep breath, cleared her slightly hoarse throat, and then spoke loudly in a tired yet penetrating voice: "Fellow villagers, as you all know, our village is facing an unprecedented disaster. This infectious disease is like a ferocious beast, coming fiercely and relentlessly attacking our homes. But don't be afraid. As long as we unite and do a good job in epidemic prevention, we will definitely have hope of defeating it. From today onwards, we will launch a comprehensive epidemic prevention campaign. Every link is crucial; it concerns the lives of each and every one of us, and the survival of our entire village." Every word she spoke was like a heavy hammer, striking hard on the already tense heartstrings of the villagers, echoing in the silent air for a long time.

“First and foremost, disinfection is of paramount importance. We must thoroughly disinfect every corner of the village with lime water and mugwort, including every inch of the floor and every corner inside the houses, every nook and cranny of the courtyards, and every street in the village—nowhere can be missed.” Lin Yue spoke as she forcefully picked up a wooden bucket filled with prepared lime water. The lime water swayed slightly in the bucket, gleaming white, as if carrying all the villagers’ hopes. Lin Yue walked to a wall, picked up a brush, dipped it in the lime water, and carefully demonstrated to the villagers how to evenly coat the wall. Her movements were steady and skilled, her eyes focused so intently that it seemed the entire world consisted only of the wall and the brush in her hand.

Chen Yu wasn't idle either. He picked up a bundle of mugwort and walked over to the villagers. He carefully lit the mugwort, and wisps of smoke rose gently, carrying a unique fragrance. He demonstrated it to the villagers, his eyes focused on each one, making sure they understood the key points: "Look, the smoke from burning mugwort has a bactericidal effect. This is the wisdom passed down from our ancestors. You can put mugwort in your houses to fumigate, but you must be careful with fire and never cause any new dangers." His voice was steady and powerful, bringing a sense of reassurance to the villagers.

After listening to Lin Yue and Chen Yu's explanation, the villagers began to work. They divided into groups, each responsible for a specific area. A young villager, holding a brush, his hands trembling slightly, a hint of nervousness in his eyes, looked at the white lime marks on the wall and said to his companion, "Will this really kill those invisible germs? I still feel uneasy, like a deer is running around in my chest." His companion patted him on the shoulder, his eyes encouraging, "Lin Yue said it works, so let's do our best. For our village, for ourselves and our families, we can't back down now." The young villager took a deep breath, nodded, and then began to apply the lime more diligently.

While disinfection work was in full swing, the work of isolating patients was also proceeding with warmth and caution. Lin Yue, accompanied by several strong villagers, arrived at the isolation ward. Upon entering, the oppressive atmosphere immediately struck them. On the beds, patients were writhing in agony, their groans echoing in the ward like the dirge of death. Lin Yue looked at these patients, her eyes filled with pity—a deep-seated compassion and unbearable sorrow. "We need to transfer these patients to a dedicated isolation area. There, they'll have a more suitable environment to care for them, and it will also prevent the spread of the virus to more people. Everyone, please be gentle and don't let the patients suffer any more," Lin Yue said softly to the villagers. Her voice was as gentle as a spring breeze, yet carried an undeniable firmness.

Every movement during the transfer of patients was fraught with hardship and challenge. The patients' painful groans and weakened appearances were like sharp knives, piercing the villagers' hearts. One patient gripped Lin Yue's hand tightly, his grip as strong as a vise, his eyes filled with fear, as if death were beckoning him: "Lin Yue, am I going to die? I don't want to die, I still have so many things to do." Lin Yue held the patient's hand tightly, tears welling in her eyes, but her voice remained gentle yet firm: "Don't worry, we will do our best to cure you, you must be strong. You are not alone in this fight, we are all by your side." Her words were like a ray of light in the darkness, bringing a sliver of comfort to the patient and slightly easing his near-collapse.

After the patients were safely transferred to the isolation area, Lin Yue did not stop for a moment. She knew that simply doing these practical tasks was far from enough. The villagers' understanding of infectious diseases was still too shallow. If they did not truly understand the principles of epidemic prevention, then all their efforts might be in vain.
