Chapter 31 Joy of Harvest

The sun had not yet fully risen, but the sky was already tinged with the pale light of dawn, and the soft rays of light, like a veil, gently enveloped the village. An atmosphere of excitement and anticipation permeated the village, a longing for a bountiful harvest, like the prelude to a joyous movement about to begin.

Lin Yue hadn't slept a wink all night. She got up early and put on her familiar light blue cotton shirt. The shirt had fine wrinkles, marks left by countless hours of labor in the fields, each wrinkle a testament to their dedication to this land. Standing by the window, gazing at the soon-to-be-harvested hillside, her eyes shone with a mixture of excitement and anticipation. A sweet smile curved her lips, a smile filled with deep affection for the new crops and gratitude for the villagers—it was their collective effort that had brought about this bountiful harvest.

Chen Yu also got up early. He walked to Lin Yue's side and gently put his arm around her shoulder. His strong arms gave a sense of reliability, a strength honed by years of hard work. He wore a simple coarse cloth shirt, the outline of his muscles faintly visible beneath. He looked at Lin Yue, his eyes filled with love: "Yue'er, today is a big day. We've been waiting for this day for so long." His voice was deep and magnetic, with a slight, almost imperceptible tremor—a sign of his excitement.

When they arrived at the hillside, the villagers had already begun to arrive. Aunt Liu, wearing her brightly colored floral apron and carrying a large basket, beamed with a radiant smile, a smile as bright as a blooming flower. "What a wonderful day! The new crops look so promising," she said, quickening her pace towards the field, her eyes sparkling with anticipation for the harvest.

Captain Li stood at the edge of the slope, a pipe in his hand, unlit but still habitually held. He gazed at the thriving new crops, his eyes filled with satisfaction. Each wrinkle on his face seemed to tell a story of past hardships and present joy. "This is all thanks to everyone," he said, his voice slightly hoarse but full of strength. "Our village hasn't had such a lively harvest in a long time."

The young villagers were especially excited, running around in the fields, their laughter echoing everywhere. A young man ran to the sorghum field, reached out and touched the heavy sorghum heads, his face beaming with delight: "Wow, these sorghum heads are really heavy! This year's harvest is sure to be good!" His eyes sparkled with youthful energy and anticipation for the harvest, his innocent smile as warm as the morning sun.

The children were also drawn to the lively atmosphere, playing and frolicking in the fields. A little boy was running through the soybean field when he tripped over a soybean pod, but he immediately got up, dusted himself off, and continued running around laughing, shouting, "Harvest time! Harvest time!" His eyes were full of curiosity and excitement; for them, it was a grand and joyous feast.

As the sun rose higher, its rays bathed the entire hillside, making the new crops gleam with a golden light. The harvest officially began, and the villagers picked up their sickles, bent down, and skillfully harvested the sorghum and soybeans. The sickles swished through the crops, making a "swish, swish" sound, like a symphony of harvest played by the earth.

Lin Yue picked up a sickle and joined the harvesting team. Although her movements weren't as practiced as the villagers', each strike was full of power. Fine beads of sweat gradually appeared on her forehead, sliding down her cheeks, but her eyes remained focused and determined. Watching the crops being cut down one after another, she was filled with emotion: "These new crops are like our children. Watching them grow from seeds, little by little, and now they're finally ready to be harvested," she said to the villagers around her, tears welling in her eyes—tears of joy.

Chen Yu, meanwhile, was organizing everyone to ensure the harvest proceeded smoothly. He shouted, "Everyone, be careful, don't rush, let's take it slow." His voice echoed through the fields, conveying a sense of calm and composure. He frequently went to the villagers to help carry the harvested crops. His tall figure bustled about in the fields, like a giant guarding the harvest.

During the harvest, everyone chatted and laughed, sharing their joy. An older woman, while cutting sorghum, said to the person next to her, "This year, we owe it all to Lin Yue and Chen Yu. Without them, we wouldn't have had such a good harvest." Her eyes were filled with gratitude, and her hands never stopped moving.

Another uncle responded with a smile, "Yes, these two kids are truly our village's lucky stars. We'll work with them from now on, and we're sure to have a good life." His face was beaming with happiness, a smile filled with anticipation for the future.

As time went by, baskets and bundles of new crops were harvested and piled up on the slope. The mountain of harvest was the result of the villagers' hard work and their hope for the future. The reddish-purple ears of sorghum shone in the sunlight, like clusters of burning flames; the plump pods of soybeans exuded a simple luster, as if they were precious gifts from the earth to the people.

When the last crop was harvested, the entire hillside was immersed in a sea of joy. The villagers cheered and jumped for joy, their faces beaming with satisfaction and happiness. An old man, looking at the mountain of harvest, had tears welling in his eyes. He said excitedly, "For so many years, we've never had such a good harvest. This is a blessing from God, and also the result of everyone working together." His voice choked with emotion, a mixture of感慨 (gǎnkǎi, deep feelings) about the hardships of the past and the overwhelming joy of the present bounty.
