Chapter 47 Preparing the Medical Clinic

Sunlight filtered through the thin clouds, illuminating every inch of the village and adding warmth to this hopeful place. Lin Yue stood before the old building chosen as the clinic, her eyes filled with both anticipation and a touch of solemnity. She knew that setting up the clinic would be full of challenges, but it was a matter of great importance concerning the health of the villagers, and there was no room for negligence.

Lin Yue wore a light blue coarse cloth blouse, the sleeves slightly rolled up, revealing her slender yet strong arms. There were a few faint stains on the clothes, marks left from her days of running around the infirmary. Her hair was simply tied in a ponytail, and stray hairs, damp with sweat, clung to her cheeks. She took a deep breath, as if gathering strength for the busy work that was about to begin.

Chen Yu walked over, carrying a hoe, his steps steady and powerful. He wore dark work clothes that clung to his strong physique, highlighting his capable appearance. His face was tanned dark by the sun, and his deep eyes revealed determination and support for Lin Yue. "Yue'er, let's begin. Today we need to clear this foundation and see if there are any areas that need repair." Chen Yu's voice was deep and magnetic, carrying an undeniable resolve.

Lin Yue nodded in response, "Okay, let's move the surrounding clutter away first, and then check carefully." As she spoke, she walked towards the pile of old wood and rubble.

At this moment, several villagers arrived one after another. Among them was an uncle, a burly man with a full beard, whose rough hands seemed to contain boundless strength. He smiled and said to Lin Yue and Chen Yu, "We're here! This clinic must be built well; it will be much more convenient for us to see a doctor in the future." The uncle's eyes revealed his enthusiasm for the project. He put down the carrying pole on his shoulder; the baskets at both ends of the pole contained some simple tools.

There was also a young man, dressed in patched-up clothes, but with a clever glint in his eyes. He excitedly said, "Sister Lin Yue, Brother Chen Yu, I'm strong, just tell me if you need any heavy work." As he spoke, he waved his arms, demonstrating his strength.

Lin Yue smiled at everyone and said, "Let's move these things to the open space over there first. Be careful, some of the wood has nails in it." As she spoke, she bent down and picked up a worn-out plank.

Everyone sprang into action immediately, and the area in front of the old house was bustling with activity. Some villagers carried heavy timber in pairs, while others cleared weeds and stones from the foundation with hoes. Chen Yu swung his hoe, striking the hard ground repeatedly, each strike kicking up a small cloud of dust. Beads of sweat rolled down his forehead, glistening in the sunlight, but his movements did not slow down in the slightest.

"Hey! This ground is really hard," Chen Yu said, panting, but his eyes remained determined, and he worked even harder.

Lin Yue walked over and handed him a handkerchief: "Take a break, don't overwork yourself." Her eyes were full of concern as she looked at Chen Yu's sweat-covered face.

Chen Yu wiped his sweat and said with a smile, "It's okay, we have to hurry. If we don't clear the foundation properly, we can't do the rest of the work." After he finished speaking, he continued to swing his hoe.

While everyone was clearing the foundation, Lin Yue carefully observed the structure of the house. She noticed a crack in the corner of the wall that looked rather serious. She frowned, squatted down, and gently touched the crack with her hand. "This crack needs to be fixed, otherwise it might affect the stability of the house," Lin Yue muttered to herself, her eyes revealing worry.

Hearing Lin Yue's words, the uncle came over to check: "Hmm, this needs to be patched up with some lime and sand. I have some at home, I'll bring it over this afternoon." The uncle was experienced; he knew how to handle it at a glance.

Lin Yue looked at the uncle gratefully: "Then I'll trouble you, uncle. With you here, we can rest easy."

As time went by and the foundation was gradually cleared, some hidden problems were exposed. In addition to the cracks in the corners of the walls, there were also some slight subsidence in the ground. After discussing it, Lin Yue and Chen Yu decided to first fill and compact the subsided areas with stones and soil, and then deal with the cracks.

The villagers began moving stones from the nearby mountains. A young man ran back and forth, his face beaming with enthusiasm, humming an unknown tune. "This work is really exciting! Once the clinic is built, our village will have its own doctor!" he said to the villagers around him as he moved stones.

The villagers nearby responded with smiles, "Yes, we won't have to worry about getting sick anymore. It's all thanks to Lin Yue and Chen Yu."

In preparing building materials, the villagers each displayed their ingenuity. Some contributed their own unused timber; although some of the wood was rotten, it could still be used after selection and processing. An elderly woman brought out old roof tiles that had been accumulated over many years, tiles bearing the mottled marks of time. She took Lin Yue's hand and said, "Young lady, these tiles are a bit old, but they can still be used. Take them to the clinic; hopefully, they can do something good for everyone." Lin Yue's eyes welled up with tears, and she held the elderly woman's hand tightly: "Auntie, thank you! Your kindness is so precious."

Besides the villagers' support, the educated youth were also actively helping. Zhang Feng and several other educated youth returned from the town, bringing back some supplies they had collected there. Zhang Feng wore glasses, his face covered in dust, but his eyes shone with excitement. "Lin Yue, we found some wire and nails, and a few old door panels in town. It's not much, but it'll do in the emergency," Zhang Feng said, putting down the sack he was carrying.
