Chapter 68 Sustainable Development of Culture and Education

Bathed in sunlight, the sturdy warehouse stood like a monument guarding the village's prosperity. Its construction undoubtedly injected a powerful boost into the village's development. New crops had a secure home, and other supplies were no longer vulnerable to wind and rain; everything seemed to be moving in a positive direction. However, Lin Yue's thoughts raced off in another direction like a runaway horse. She knew that material wealth was only one aspect of village development, while the nourishment of culture and education were the invisible wings that would truly allow the village to take flight.

Lin Yue stood quietly on a small hill not far from the warehouse, a gentle breeze ruffling her hair. She wore a plain cotton shirt, the hem swaying lightly in the wind, much like her restless heart. Her gaze passed over the warehouse, landing on the cluster of neatly arranged village houses, her eyes revealing a complex mix of worry and anticipation. In her mind, a blueprint for cultural and educational development had already been sketched out, but she also knew that many difficulties lay ahead to turn this blueprint into reality.

"Lin Yue, are you spacing out here again?" Chen Yu's voice came from behind him as he walked steadily to Lin Yue's side. Chen Yu was wearing a dark blue work uniform, with a few specks of dust from his work, highlighting his hardworking and simple nature. His face was tanned dark by the sun, and his deep eyes showed concern for Lin Yue.

Lin Yue turned her head slightly to look at Chen Yu, forcing a smile. "Brother Yu, I'm thinking about the future development of our village. The warehouse is built, but we can't be satisfied with just that. We have to consider the children, the future of the whole village, and ensure that everyone has education and knowledge." Her voice was soft yet firm, every word carrying her deep affection for the village.

Chen Yu nodded. He understood Lin Yue and knew that once she had an idea, she would go all out. "You're right. So what are your plans?" he asked, his gaze following Lin Yue as she looked towards the village.

"I want to build a library and a cultural activity room in the village so that everyone has a place to study and have fun, and to improve everyone's cultural literacy." Lin Yue's eyes sparkled, as if they could see through everything in front of her and witness the lively scene after the library and activity room were completed.

On a sunny day, Lin Yue gathered the villagers in the village square. In the center of the square stood an ancient banyan tree, its dense foliage like a giant green umbrella, shielding the villagers from the sun. The villagers arrived one after another, some sitting on their own small stools, others standing to the side, all whispering and speculating about the content of the meeting.

Standing under the banyan tree, Lin Yue cleared her throat and began, “Fellow villagers, as you all know, our village is developing better and better. New crops have greatly improved our lives, and our infrastructure is constantly being improved. However, we cannot only see the immediate benefits; we must also think about our future generations.” She paused, looking at the villagers’ focused eyes, and continued, “I want to build a library and a cultural activity room in the village. These are places where we can acquire knowledge and pass on our culture. Children can read all kinds of books in the library and broaden their horizons; adults can learn new skills and exchange experiences in the cultural activity room.”

As soon as Lin Yue finished speaking, a buzz of discussion arose from the crowd. An elderly man with gray hair stepped forward; he was Grandpa Wang, a respected elder in the village. Grandpa Wang frowned, his tone worried, and said, "Lin Yue, your idea is good, but our village has always relied on farming for a living. Most of us haven't had much education. Will building these things be useful? And it will cost a lot of money, won't it? We can't waste the money we've worked so hard to earn." His words resonated with many villagers, who nodded in agreement, their faces showing doubt.

Lin Yue was prepared. She smiled at Grandpa Wang, then addressed everyone, saying, "Grandpa, I understand your concerns. Our village doesn't have much of an educational foundation, but that's precisely why we need to change. Regarding the money, we can take it slowly. We can start by making simple renovations to the vacant houses in the village. As for books, we can encourage everyone to donate any books they don't need to start. Furthermore, we can seek help from outside organizations. I believe that as long as we are determined, we will always find a way."

At this moment, Xiao Fang, a young woman from the village, stepped forward. Xiao Fang had two braids and bright, sparkling eyes. "Sister Lin Yue, I support you! I think this is a great idea. We can't let our children be as uneducated as we are. With a library and activity room, our village will definitely be different." Xiao Fang's voice was clear, loud, and full of enthusiasm. Her words resonated with some of the other young people.

Lin Yue looked gratefully at Xiao Fang and the young people who supported her, her eyes filled with confidence. "Thank you all for your support. I know this won't be easy, but as long as we work together, we can definitely do it."

After a heated discussion, although some villagers still had doubts, most were willing to give it a try. Thus, the plan to build a library and cultural activity room was launched amidst the villagers' anticipation and concerns.

Lin Yue led several villagers familiar with architecture to an abandoned old house in the village. The house was quite old; much of the plaster had peeled off the walls, revealing the rough bricks underneath. Several roof tiles were also broken, and sunlight streamed through the gaps, casting golden rays onto the dusty floor. Several panes of glass were broken in the windows, the window frames were rotten, and weeds grew all around, giving the house a dilapidated appearance.
