After Lin Yue proposed building a library and cultural activity room, the whole village seemed to be injected with new vitality. Everyone cherished a yearning for knowledge and culture and looked forward to this new public space bringing more vitality to the village.
The morning sun pierced through the thin clouds, bathing every inch of the village in its light, illuminating the old building chosen as the site for the library and activity room. This former village office bore the marks of time. In places, the plaster had peeled away, revealing the rough brickwork beneath, and moss grew thickly at the base, like a green carpet. The roof tiles were uneven, missing pieces in some places, allowing sunlight to filter through and create golden rays inside. The doors and windows were also dilapidated; many panes of glass were broken, and the door frames were loose, as if a strong wind could topple them over.
Lin Yue stood before the old building, her eyes filled with determination. She wore a beige shirt, the cuffs slightly rolled up, showcasing her capable demeanor. Her gaze carefully examined every corner of the building, her mind already beginning to envision its future. "Although this place is dilapidated, as long as we renovate it with our hearts, it will definitely become a place everyone loves," she silently told herself, feeling the heavy responsibility on her shoulders.
Before long, the villagers arrived one after another. A-Qiang was the first to arrive; he was tall and robust, with dark, shiny skin that accentuated his strength. He carried a hoe, his face beaming with a warm smile. "Sister Lin Yue, I'm here! This place is a bit dilapidated, but I'm confident I can fix it." As he spoke, he slammed the hoe into the ground, kicking up a small cloud of dust, his eyes gleaming with determination.
Then, the village elders slowly arrived. Grandpa Wang, leaning on his cane, walked slowly but steadily. Looking at the old building, a hint of reminiscence flashed in his eyes. "This village office used to be so lively. Now, turning it into a library and activity room will put it to good use again." He squinted slightly, as if he could see the bustling scene of people coming and going in the past.
Lin Yue went up to him with a smile and said, "Grandpa, yes, we want to make this place lively again. Everyone's here, so let's discuss how to begin."
So the villagers sat together and started discussing it.
Xiaofang is a young woman from the village with long, shiny black hair tied in a ponytail. She blinked her big eyes and said, "I think we need to clean out the things inside first, to see what's still usable and what needs to be thrown away."
Lin Yue nodded in agreement: "Xiao Fang is right, cleaning is the first step. And during the cleaning process, we need to be careful, because some places may not be very secure."
And so, everyone split into several groups. A-Qiang led a few strong young men to clean up the clutter inside the building. They walked through the dilapidated door, where a musty smell permeated the air, and dust danced in the sunlight.
"Be careful, everyone, it's very dusty in here," A-Qiang warned, leading the way to a pile of old tables and chairs. He lifted one table with effort, his muscles tense, and the veins on his forehead bulging slightly. "Hey, this table is pretty heavy," he exclaimed as he carried it to the doorway. The other young men followed suit, some carrying things in pairs, others using handcarts to move larger items. During the process, they joked and laughed, their cheerful voices echoing throughout the building.
The team inspecting the building structure was led by Uncle Li, an experienced old craftsman from the village. Uncle Li had gray hair but sharp eyes. He held a small hammer and gently tapped on the walls and pillars, carefully listening to the changes in the sound. "There are cracks in the walls here; they need repair," he said, frowning, a hint of worry in his eyes. "And these pillars, we need to check if they're still sturdy. If there are problems, we need to find a way to reinforce them." As he inspected, he explained to the young villagers around him, his earnest demeanor as if he were imparting a peerless skill.
Outside the building, the villagers responsible for collecting and preparing tools and materials were also busy. Some villagers brought cleaning tools such as brooms and shovels from their own homes, while others prepared to go to town to buy some building materials such as cement and timber.
Looking at the old building, a villager said with some concern, "This must have cost a lot of money. I don't know if we have enough materials."
Another villager patted him on the shoulder: "Don't worry, we'll figure something out together. Besides, this is for the good of our village, so the money is well spent."
While clearing out the clutter, a young man found an old box in a corner. The box wasn't big, but it looked quite old, covered in dust, and had a rusty lock.
"Brother Qiang, look at this box! Maybe there's treasure inside!" the young man exclaimed excitedly.
Ah Qiang walked over, squatted down, and looked at the box. "Let's move it outside first, and take another look after we've cleaned it up," he said, his eyes sparkling with curiosity.
After a busy day, the clutter inside the building was mostly cleared away. In the evening, the villagers sat around in the open space outside the building. Although everyone was a little tired, they all had satisfied smiles on their faces.
Looking at everyone, Lin Yue said gratefully, "Everyone has worked hard today. We have taken an important step. Next, we will repair the building based on Uncle Li's inspection results. This may encounter many difficulties, but I believe that as long as we are united, there is no difficulty that we cannot overcome."
