The morning light filtered through the tattered window paper, casting dappled shadows on the simple earthen bed at the educated youth settlement. Lin Yue slowly awoke from her sleep. She blinked her still-sleepy eyes, momentarily disoriented. It wasn't until the hard surface of the bed caused her back pain that she fully snapped out of her daze, sighed helplessly, and finally remembered her current situation: that of an educated youth's wife in the 1970s!
After tidying up quickly, Lin Yue stepped out of the house. The morning air, carrying the fragrance of earth and grass, invigorated her. Chen Yu was in the yard tidying up farm tools; his tall figure appeared particularly robust in the morning light. Seeing Lin Yue come out, he paused, his gaze shifting somewhat awkwardly, and said softly, "Good morning." Lin Yue replied with a slightly restrained "Good morning," as if an invisible veil separated them.
Today's task was to weed the fields. The educated youth and villagers carried their farm tools, chatting and laughing as they walked towards the fields. Lin Yue followed in the group, curiously looking around at everything. The fields were a vibrant scene of life, with lush green wheat seedlings swaying gently in the breeze, like a green ocean. However, behind this beautiful sight lay arduous labor.
Once in the fields, everyone got to work. Lin Yue followed suit, bending down and reaching out to pull weeds. But this seemingly simple action proved difficult. Soon, her back ached, and her hands were covered in mud. Chen Yu, watching Lin Yue from a distance, felt a pang of pity seeing her struggle. He stopped what he was doing, went over to her, and said, "Lin Yue, pulling weeds like that is too strenuous. Let me teach you a method." He picked up a hoe and demonstrated to Lin Yue how to easily uproot the weeds.
Lin Yue studied diligently, her eyes focused and bright. Chen Yu looked at her profile, a slight stirring in his heart. He discovered that this woman possessed a unique charm; whether it was her resilience in the face of difficulties or her seriousness in learning new things, it all made him unable to resist wanting to get closer.
"I see, thank you, Chen Yu." After mastering the technique, Lin Yue worked much faster, and she looked at Chen Yu gratefully. Chen Yu smiled and said, "You're welcome. You'll get used to it." The two smiled at each other, and for a moment, a subtle emotion seemed to flow in the air.
As the sun rose higher, the weather grew hot, and everyone's foreheads were covered in sweat. Lin Yue felt her clothes were soaked through, clinging uncomfortably to her back. But she didn't complain and continued working diligently. Chen Yu would occasionally walk over to Lin Yue, handing her a water pouch so she could drink and quench her thirst.
"Lin Yue, if you're tired, take a break. Don't push yourself." Chen Yu said with concern, looking at Lin Yue's flushed face.
"I'm fine. Everyone's working, so I can't slack off," Lin Yue replied with a smile. Her smile was especially radiant in the sunlight, leaving Chen Yu somewhat mesmerized.
During a break from work, everyone sat down to rest on the edge of the field. Lin Yue leaned against a tree, slightly out of breath. She frowned as she looked at the blisters on her hands. Chen Yu noticed her expression, silently took a clean cloth from his pocket, and gently pulled Lin Yue's hand to bandage it. Lin Yue's hand trembled slightly; she tried to pull her hand away, feeling a little embarrassed, but Chen Yu held it firmly.
"Don't move, let me bandage it, otherwise it will get infected." Chen Yu's voice was gentle as he carefully bandaged Lin Yue's skin. His fingers occasionally brushed against her skin, making both of their hearts race involuntarily. The other educated youths around them smiled knowingly at this scene, some even whispering teasingly, "Chen Yu, you really dote on your wife." Chen Yu's face flushed slightly, and Lin Yue felt a little embarrassed, lowering her head and avoiding Chen Yu's eyes.
After resting, they continued working. The atmosphere between Lin Yue and Chen Yu became somewhat subtle; they were no longer as reserved as before, and occasionally, when their eyes met, they would exchange shy smiles. The two chatted idly as they weeded.
"Lin Yue, when you were in your hometown, did you ever do farm work?" Chen Yu asked.
“No, my life before was very different from here,” Lin Yue replied. She thought of modern life, the advanced medical equipment and comfortable working environment in the hospital, which was worlds apart from this place.
"Then you must find it very hard here, right?" Chen Yu looked at her with some concern.
"It's hard work, but I think it's also very meaningful. Being able to work with my own hands and watch the crops grow little by little is a wonderful feeling," Lin Yue said with a smile, her eyes shining with determination.
Looking at her, Chen Yu felt even more admiration for her. He discovered that Lin Yue always saw things from different perspectives, and this optimistic and positive attitude deeply inspired him.
Before they knew it, the sun was already setting, and the work was finally over. The educated youth and villagers carried their farm tools and dragged their weary bodies back home. Lin Yue and Chen Yu walked at the back of the group, their shadows stretched long in the afterglow of the setting sun. A gentle breeze blew by, bringing a touch of coolness. Lin Yue gently brushed the hair from her forehead and turned to look at Chen Yu.
"I'm really tired today, but I feel like I've learned a lot," Lin Yue said with emotion.
"Yes, labor is hard work, but it helps people grow." Chen Yu looked at Lin Yue with a gentle look in his eyes. "You did a great job today."
Lin Yue's lips curled up slightly; she could sense that Chen Yu's praise was genuine. The distance between them unconsciously closed a little further, their shoulders occasionally brushing against each other, each touch feeling like a jolt of electricity coursing through their bodies.
