Chapter 39 Suspicion of Yi Mingyu
Seeing that Yi Mingyu was about to leave, Madam Yi was angered by his behavior and hurriedly shouted, "Yi Mingyu, stop right there! Did I give you permission to leave?!"
She thought that hearing her stern rebuke would make Yi Mingyu stop, but to her surprise, Yi Mingyu acted as if he hadn't heard her at all and walked even faster.
Yi Mingyu walked quickly, with only one thought in his mind: he had to go to the Gu residence to find Gu Qingsu.
However, as soon as he stepped out of the mansion gate, he saw Feng Rongrong, who had already left, suddenly reappear from nowhere.
"Young Master Yi." Feng Rongrong called out in a sweet voice. She was originally about to leave, but she still had some things she wanted to say to Yi Mingyu, so she waited nearby to see if he would come out.
Today, she wore a light pink silk dress, which was quite an elaborate outfit. She had a delicate pearl flower in her hair, all so that she could expose Gu Qingsu's affair and get Yi Mingyu to pay more attention to her.
Seeing that she was blocking his way, Yi Mingyu looked up at her, his tone full of impatience, without any of his usual gentleness.
"Why haven't you left yet?" At this moment, he was in a hurry to go to the Gu residence and really had no mood to deal with Feng Rongrong.
“I…” Feng Rongrong didn’t expect Yi Mingyu to speak so bluntly, and the smile on her face froze.
But he quickly forced a gentle smile. Since his affair with Gu Qingxu had been exposed, he and Gu Qingxu were no longer related. He still had a chance.
Her eyes lit up instantly, and she said with a hint of pride, "I just came to visit and talked with your mother for a long time. She really likes me."
She tilted her head slightly, seemingly waiting for Yi Mingyu's response, hoping that Yi Mingyu's attitude towards her would change because of this.
However, her words did not stir any emotion in Yi Mingyu's heart. Yi Mingyu merely lifted his eyelids slightly, his eyes revealing a hint of indifference, as if he disliked her coming to the Yi residence without permission.
"It's best for a young lady like you not to visit so casually; it won't do you any good for your reputation if word gets out," he said, as if he were thinking of her best interests.
These seemingly innocuous words were like a bucket of cold water, instantly extinguishing the enthusiasm in Feng Rongrong's heart.
"Huh?" Feng Rongrong was somewhat taken aback, not expecting Yi Mingyu to say that. She opened her mouth, wanting to explain, "I just..."
Before she could finish speaking, Yi Mingyu coldly reminded her again, "I remember I made it very clear to Miss Feng last time that I have no feelings for her whatsoever, so please don't come here again in the future, so as not to damage your reputation."
These harsh words, uttered clearly, reached Feng Rongrong's ears. A moment of stunned silence flashed across her eyes; she never expected Yi Mingyu to utter such cold and heartless words.
Her eyes reddened slightly, and she blinked rapidly, trying hard not to let the tears fall. She kept reassuring herself that he must have been coerced by Gu Qingxu, which was why he was treating her this way.
Immediately, as if grasping at the last straw, she hurriedly said, "I know that your relationship with Gu Qingxu is fake, which is why you are rejecting me like this, right?"
She stared intently at Yi Mingyu, her eyes filled with anticipation, hoping to get a positive answer from him.
To her surprise, Yi Mingyu did not give her the response she wanted. Instead, his face darkened, and he asked her, "How did you know?" His eyes held a scrutinizing gaze, which made Feng Rongrong feel inexplicably uneasy.
Upon being asked this by Yi Mingyu, Feng Rongrong felt a surge of grievance welling up inside her. She bit her lip, momentarily at a loss for words. She couldn't very well say that she had deliberately tested Gu Qingsu and thus found out, could she?
Seeing that Feng Rongrong remained silent, Yi Mingyu grew increasingly impatient and, not wanting to continue dealing with her, spoke up, saying, "I have no feelings for you and have no relation to Miss Gu. Please do not make assumptions, Miss Feng."
After saying that, he turned to leave.
Seeing this, Feng Rongrong panicked and quickly grabbed his sleeve, saying in a tearful voice, "You must have been coerced by Gu Qingsu, right? Gu Qingsu loves threatening people..."
Before she could finish speaking, Feng Rongrong was forcefully shoved away by Yi Mingyu. A cold glint instantly appeared in Yi Mingyu's eyes, like frost in the dead of winter, sending chills down one's spine.
As if she couldn't bear to hear even the slightest criticism of Gu Qingxu, she loudly rebuked, "Miss Gu has never coerced me, so please, Miss Feng, watch your words!"
Feng Rongrong was thrown around and nearly fell. She felt as if all the strength had been drained from her body at that moment, and she was on the verge of collapse.
She dared not think of the worst possibility, her eyes glistening with tears, her voice filled with despair as she questioned, "If you never coerced me, then why did you cooperate with Gu Qingxu!"
"Or... do you have fallen for Gu Qingxu?"
She stared intently at Yi Mingyu, her eyes filled with resentment and unwillingness.
Yi Mingyu, who was about to leave, froze at the mention of "falling in love with Gu Qingsu," as if time had stood still. His mind went completely blank, as if it had suddenly stopped working.
At this moment, all the abnormalities that he himself had never noticed in the past seemed to have a reasonable explanation.
He couldn't stand hearing anyone say anything bad about Gu Qingxu. Whenever someone slandered her, he couldn't help but defend her. He always paid special attention to Gu Qingxu's emotions and didn't want her to be unhappy in the slightest. Every time he faced Gu Qingxu, he would feel inexplicably awkward, unlike his usual calm and composed self.
Yi Mingyu remained silent for a long time, simply standing there blankly. His silence made Feng Rongrong increasingly anxious. She would rather Yi Mingyu speak coldly to her again than have him remain silent like this. Because at this moment, his silence seemed to prove that what she said was true.
After a long while, Yi Mingyu slowly came to his senses. He knew he couldn't let Gu Qingxu's reputation be damaged at this moment, so he suppressed his complicated emotions and coldly warned her.
"My relationship with Miss Gu is none of Miss Feng's business. I hope Miss Feng will refrain from making unfounded speculations and fabricating stories in the future."
After saying that, he ignored her and left.
Watching Yi Mingyu's departing figure, Feng Rongrong felt like a complete joke. She had finally managed to hold her head high in front of Gu Qingxu today, and was overjoyed, thinking that she finally had a chance to win Yi Mingyu's heart. But in the blink of an eye, everything had vanished like a bubble.
After escaping, Yi Mingyu went to the Gu residence without the slightest hesitation.
When the servant told Cheng about Yi Mingyu's actions outside the Gu residence, Cheng was reclining in her chair with her eyes closed, not even lifting her eyelids upon hearing the news.
"Tell him he doesn't need to come to the Gu residence anymore." Cheng's voice was icy with a hint of impatience.
As she spoke, she couldn't help but sigh. If Yi Mingyu had really done something wrong, she would have called him in and reprimanded him. But now it seemed that he was probably being coerced by Gu Qingsu, so it was better to just not see him and not worry about him.
The servant, having received the order, hurried out to report. Looking at Yi Mingyu's anxious appearance, he couldn't help but feel a little ashamed. After all, they had previously thought that Yi Mingyu had won Gu Qingsu's favor and might become the fifth son-in-law in the future, but now he wouldn't even be allowed to enter the Gu residence.
"Young Master Yi, my lady says you don't need to come anymore," the servant said in a low voice.
Yi Mingyu's anxious face froze instantly, as if he had been frozen in place. He was unwilling to leave now and wanted to hold on a little longer.
"Could you please pass on the message again, just say that I have something to say?"
Yi Mingyu's eyes were full of earnestness, and his tone carried a hint of pleading.
The servant looked troubled. He dared not provoke Madam Cheng again, since she had been furious about Gu Qingxu's matter today, and he dared not go near her again.
"Young master, please return," the servant said somewhat awkwardly.
Yi Mingyu stood there blankly, his legs feeling as heavy as lead, his heart filled with mixed emotions, unable to utter a word. He didn't know if this was Madam Gu's intention, or Gu Qingsu's desire that he was no longer of any use.
His fingertips unconsciously clenched, the veins on the back of his hands bulged, and his knuckles turned slightly white from the force. He suddenly felt a pang of blame for whoever had revealed his feigned relationship with Gu Qingsu.
Seeing that the doorman also looked troubled, he slowly turned around and left the front of the Gu residence with heavy steps.
A gentle breeze swept by, rustling the treetops atop the Gu family mansion wall.
After descending from the wall of the Yi residence, Gu Qingsu walked slowly, her earlier urgency completely gone. Her mind was caught in a whirlpool, constantly swirling with one question: Was it really Yi Mingyu who told Feng Rongrong about the deception? This question weighed heavily on her heart like a dark cloud.
Ruan Xingzhu paced anxiously back and forth in the room, barely daring to breathe, afraid that someone would discover Gu Qingxu was missing. When she finally heard a slight sound coming from the back door, the huge weight that had been hanging over her heart finally lifted.
"Fifth Sister, you're finally back." Ruan Xingzhu said thankfully, her face full of relief, but she didn't notice that Gu Qingxu's face was extremely pale, revealing an unconcealable weariness and disappointment.
"You have no idea, when Granny Liu came to deliver something earlier, thankfully she didn't come in, it scared me to death."
At this moment, Gu Qingxu's mind was not on Ruan Xingzhu's words at all. She looked tired, her eyes were somewhat empty, and her voice was a little hoarse as she said, "Xingzhu, you should go back. You don't need to stay with me tonight."
Ruan Xingzhu was slightly taken aback and subconsciously swallowed. She had come to keep Gu Qingxu company because she was worried that Gu Qingxu was feeling down, but seeing Gu Qingxu's current appearance, she couldn't help but feel a little puzzled.
After hesitating for a moment, she turned and walked out. As she left, a look of confusion appeared on her face. Why was Gu Qingxu even more listless after going out than before?
