After he finished speaking, the room fell silent instantly.
Jiang Wan's face was deathly pale, and she remained completely still, as if frozen in place.
Shen Cang's situation wasn't much better than hers.
He stared at the mother and child in astonishment and shock, completely dumbfounded.
It wasn't until the wine glass in his hand clattered to the ground that Jiang Wan, who was nearly startled out of her wits, came back to her senses.
"Wanniang, what's going on?" Shen Cang looked troubled. He pointed at Jia Lan and asked, "Who is this child? Why does he call you 'Mother'?"
"He is..."
Jiang Wan looked flustered and stammered.
Before she could finish speaking, Jia Lan replied, "I am her son!"
"Hey!"
Jiang Wan was so anxious that she instinctively tried to cover Jia Lan's mouth, but it was too late.
Even though Shen Cang already knew the child's identity after hearing him call out "Mother," he still felt dizzy and disoriented when he was certain that the child was her son.
Since their reunion, she has told him everything about her experiences, but she hasn't mentioned a word about having such a big son!
It's clearly impossible that she forgot.
She was clearly deliberately hiding it!
"Husband, husband, please let me explain!" She had ruined her reputation before finally entering this family. If she were kicked out of the Shen family now, she and her son would have no way to survive.
"It's not what you think, let me tell you."
Shen Cang was furious: "What else do you have to say!"
"My husband..."
"Mother!" Just then, Jia Lan added fuel to the fire: "Are you getting pregnant with this man's child and no longer planning to have me?"
"Lan'er, what nonsense are you talking about?" When did she get pregnant?
Jiang Wan felt utterly overwhelmed.
She had clearly hidden the child well and had repeatedly told him not to come to the Shen family to find her before she came to pick him up. How could he knowingly do such a thing?
As she pondered, Jiang Wan's gaze inadvertently fell upon Shen Qiyin beside her, and she was suddenly startled.
Could it be her?!
But……
How could she know about Lan Ge'er's existence?
Their eyes met, and Shen Qiyin spoke calmly: "When I returned to the manor just now, I saw him causing a scene in front of the gate and even injuring a servant with a slingshot. After asking him carefully, I learned that he is your son, Aunt Wan, so I brought him in to see you."
"I see."
"Mother, I came to see you, but they wouldn't let me in." Upon seeing someone who could stand up for her, Jia Lan immediately complained, "That woman even hit me on the head with a slingshot, Mother, it hurts!"
Jiang Wan had just noticed the injury on his head and thought he had accidentally bumped into something while playing with his companions, but she didn't expect it was Shen Qiyin who hit him.
How can a grown woman like her argue with a child?
Shen Qiyin said, "I didn't know his relationship with you, Aunt Wan. I just thought he was some naughty kid who came to cause trouble. When I saw that he hurt Dafu and even tried to hit me with a slingshot, I taught him a lesson. Will you be angry with me, Aunt Wan?"
“…How could that be?” Jiang Wan forced a smile.
Shen Cang was already furious, and if she were to start a fight with Shen Qiyin now, he would probably become even angrier.
Although she didn't offend the father and son, Jia Lan was very unhappy: "Mother! I told you she hit me, why don't you avenge me?"
"Lan'er, be good. Mother has something to do right now. You should go back to your great-aunt's house first, okay?"
"I'm not leaving!"
"Lan'er..."
"You just think I'm a burden and are planning to abandon me. I won't leave, I won't leave, I'm going to stay here!" Jia Lan said, then lay down on the ground and started rolling around.
Shen Cang's face was completely black with anger.
He looked down at Jiang Wan as she gently coaxed the child, and said in a cold voice, "Wan's mother, let me make this clear: I can forgive you for lying to me, but I can't let you be a sucker for nothing."
"Either you send him away right now."
"Or, you might as well just go with him!"
"You choose!"
After saying this, Shen Cang flicked his sleeves and left.
No matter how hard Jiang Wan shouted after him, he didn't even turn his head.
Jiang Wan burst into tears.
Jia Lan lay on the ground for a while, and then, whether from the cold or from hunger, she stopped making a fuss and crying. She even got up on her own, sat in a chair, and started eating.
Even someone as composed as Shen Xiyin couldn't help but be surprised.
She suddenly had a question: her mother had always regretted not having a son, but if she had a son like this, she wondered if she would still be as happy as she had been when she first looked forward to it.
Until late at night.
The moon is bright and the clouds are light; the frost and dew are heavy.
When Xiao Yan arrived, Shen Qiyin was probably tired from waiting for him. She sat quietly with her chin resting on her hand, her eyes slightly closed, as if she had fallen asleep.
A large incense burner sat beside her, making the whole room warm and cozy.
Xiao Yan took off his cloak, warmed himself by the fire in the incense burner to dispel the chill, and then quietly sat down next to her.
She had a piece of fabric piled on her lap, and a basket on the table containing needles, thread, scissors, and other tools for her work.
Xiao Yan felt a warmth in his heart when he remembered her saying that she would make him a dress.
Shen Qiyin showed no signs of waking up.
His head drooped down little by little, and the hair that was draped over his back fell down his shoulders in strands, landing on his wrists.
It's tingly and tantalizingly itchy.
As he watched, a thought suddenly came to mind.
After silently taking care of everything, he held Shen Qiyin's hand and softly called to her, "Yinyin, go inside and sleep. I'm leaving."
