Chapter 2 Rebirth

"I?"

"Mother knows that you are a girl and there is not much you can do. It is a pity that you are not a man and cannot run errands for your father like your two brothers."

Upon hearing this, Shen Qiyin's eyes suddenly darkened.

It's always like this.

Since she was born, she had heard far too many comparisons, both overt and covert, made between her and her brother.

After her mother married her father, she was unable to conceive for a long time, until even her aunt gave birth to her own child.

She finally became pregnant, and she dreamed of having a son, but unfortunately...

The result was that she was not only disappointed, but even desperate.

She injured her body when she gave birth to Shen Xiyin, and the doctor said that she would have difficulty conceiving again in the future.

Shen Cang disliked her for being old and losing her beauty, and resented that she held the title of his legal wife but failed to give him a legitimate son, so he treated her with extreme coldness.

Madam Shen disliked her for not being able to conceive; after all the trouble she had, her child was a girl, which caused her a lot of distress.

She dared not contradict her husband and mother-in-law, suppressing all her grievances and anger, and instead vented them on her only daughter.

Shen Qiyin still remembers the way her mother stabbed her arm with a hairpin while screaming in despair.

She said, "It's all your fault! It's all your fault!"

"Why aren't you a boy? If you were a boy, your mother wouldn't have to suffer all this humiliation."

"What sins did I commit in my past life to give birth to a debt collector like you..."

Word by word, the words are still in my ears.

Shen Qiyin lowered her eyes slightly, her fine eyelashes obscuring the dark light in them.

She thought she should show her mother what a real "debt collector" was like.

Madam Shen: "But then again, your brother is doing his best to fulfill his filial duty, and you can't just stand by and watch."

What do you mean by that?

"Mother has already had people inquire outside and found out that Eunuch Qin in the palace is the most easy to talk to..."

Chen Xiyin's fingertips trembled slightly.

They've arrived.

In her past life, her mother was just like that, sobbing and crying to her, saying things like, "As blood relatives, we should not care about gains or losses; filial piety is more important than heaven, we must save her father no matter what."

Even if Madam Shen hadn't given these high-sounding reasons, even if she had known all along that the Qin family was facing a life-or-death situation, Shen Qiyin would still have gone because they had given her her life.

But they don't know how to cherish it.

What was her father, who was so aloof that he was "not afraid of death," saying in his past life?

—If I had known I would raise such a heartless daughter, I would have preferred to have died in prison!

Then he might as well die in prison.

She had already repaid the debt of her life to them in her past life.

Madam Shen: "Yin'er, let's go and beg Eunuch Qin. Maybe he can get your father out."

Shen Qiyin raised her eyes, her tone ambiguous: "Who's going?" Whoever wants to go can go, she's not going!

“Your grandmother is getting old, how can we trouble her? After thinking it over, I think it’s best to leave this matter to you.”

"You are the only legitimate daughter in our household. Having you come forward shows that we value you."

"When your father gets out of prison, if he knows it was thanks to you that he got him out, he'll naturally look at us mother and daughter with new respect. From then on, let's see who in this mansion will look down on us!"

Finally, Madam Shen looked at Shen Qiyin with expectant eyes: "What do you think?"

“I think…” Her red lips parted slightly, and Shen Qiyin said softly, “It’s not good.”

“You…” Madam Shen frowned, her gentle and loving expression completely changed, her eyes filled with resentment and her mouth full of accusations: “How can you be so heartless? That’s your own father in jail! You won’t even do such a small thing, it’s clear I’ve raised you for nothing.”

She was weak her whole life, never taking the lead in anything, except when it came to scheming against her own daughter.

Shen Qiyin listened quietly; those words that once felt like a knife to her heart could no longer hurt her in the slightest.

After Madam Shen had finished scolding, she spoke in a dejected tone: "Mother, don't you know that Grandmother has always disliked me because I'm a maid, and sees me as a thorn in her side?"

“If I succeed in this, she will not only not appreciate my contribution, but will also blame me for stealing the limelight from my brothers; on the contrary, if I fail, I will be scolded at best, and beaten at worst. But no matter how badly I fail, I will be slapped in the face.”

"This..." Madam Shen hesitated immediately when her reputation was involved, but still asked impatiently, "Then what do you suggest we do?"

“I say, it would be better if you went.” Shen Qiyin stared intently at Madam Shen, a playful smile flashing across her eyes.

"Can I solve this?"

A somber mood can't be resolved, but it can at least ease one's anger.

But she said, "You are Father's legal wife and the mistress of this mansion. It is only right and proper that you go."

Shen Qiyin affectionately took Madam Shen's hand and said, "When Father is released from prison, if he knows that it was you who went to great lengths to save him, he will naturally regret that he let you down in the past."

"When you reconcile, you might even get the power to manage the household from your grandmother and give it back to you."

With just a few words, Shen Xiyin stirred up Madam Shen's thoughts.

She was unaware of the inside story of the Qin family.

The reason she initially wanted to marry Shen Qi was simply because she thought that if her plea for mercy failed and she was scolded by the old lady, she would have her daughter to take the blame; and if it succeeded, it would be because of her good upbringing as a mother.

But what this girl said is also true.

If I can accomplish this myself, the impression I leave on the master will naturally be extraordinary.
