Winter nights come quickly; while there is still a glimmer of light on the western horizon, darkness has already crept in from the east.
The three followed the crowd to the moat of the capital city. The moat was a night market, which was even more lively at night, with lanterns everywhere and tourists coming and going.
From afar, Yun Qingran could see the river lanterns in the moat. One by one, the colorful lanterns, some exquisite and some rough in workmanship, were placed in the water. Their lights swayed and drifted with the current, adding a beautiful touch to the languid night.
Jun Yan Yan and Jun An An also looked longingly at the river lanterns, but still did not ask to play with them.
"Yan Yan, An An, do you want to play with the river lanterns?" Yun Qingran squatted down in front of the two children and asked softly.
The two children nodded.
"If that's the case, why don't you say anything?" Yun Qingran noticed that the two children were too precocious. Although they were only three years old, they already knew how to suppress their nature and control themselves from making demands on adults.
This may seem like a good thing, saving adults a lot of trouble, but it's not. Such children may have a bleak childhood, affecting their personality development, or even develop mental illnesses.
“We don’t want to trouble you, sister,” Jun An’an said, biting her lip.
"It won't bother me. On the contrary, I'd like you to bother me. Yan Yan, An An, you don't need to be overly sensible. I like you happy and cheerful girls." Yun Qingran held the two children's little hands in her palms.
The two children's eyes instantly welled up with tears.
"Why do you find yourselves troublesome? Is your father not good to you?" Yun Qingran asked, wiping the two children's tears with a handkerchief.
If Jun Molin really treats them badly and is manipulatively controlling their emotions, then she will definitely fight him to the end!
Children are vulnerable and innocent beings. They have committed no sins, and no one has the right to torment them, not even their own parents!
“Father has been very good to us, we just didn’t want to trouble him,” Jun An’an said, biting her lip and lowering her head.
“Father is busy leading troops into battle, handling official duties, practicing martial arts, and reading books. He is very busy and works very hard, but he still has to take care of us two sick burdens. We feel very sorry for our father.” Jun Yan Yan started crying again as she spoke, and tears fell like pearls.
Upon hearing this, Yun Qingran felt a sharp, stabbing pain in her heart, so intense that her body contorted in pain. It was as if something extraordinary was awakening within her.
“Silly children, how could you think of yourselves as a burden? No, you are not.” Yun Qingran hugged the two children. “Children are a blessing to their parents. Although you are sick, you can’t be blamed for being sick.”
“But we don’t want Father to suffer too much. He’s really had a tough time these past few years.” Even the usually cool Jun An’an couldn’t help but break down in tears.
Yun Qingran sighed inwardly. The two children were right. Jun Molin, a grown man, was indeed having a hard time taking care of two sick children, and there was no one in charge of the backyard.
"Don't cry, your sister will definitely cure your illnesses. Then you can run and jump like ordinary children, and your father won't have to work so hard anymore." Yun Qingran comforted the two children. "Also, if you want anything or want to play anything in the future, just tell your sister. As long as it's a legitimate request, your sister will definitely fulfill it."
"Thank you, sister, you're so kind." Jun Yanyan looked at Yun Qingran with affection. Her sister was the first person to say such a thing to them. She longed to have a mother like her.
It's a pity about her mother...
The two children stopped crying and gradually stopped, helping each other wipe away their tears.
"What kind of river lantern do you want? Come and choose." Yun Qingran took the two children's hands and led them to the shelf selling river lanterns, letting them choose one.
After the two children chose their river lanterns, Yun Qingran lit them with a tinderbox and handed them to them so they could put them into the gently flowing river.
The two little ones followed everyone else's example, standing by the river, clasping their hands together, and making wishes to the departing river lanterns.
Jun Molin stood in the darkness at a distance, silently watching all of this, his heart filled with turbulent emotions. He had always taken meticulous care of his two children, but he had still neglected to show them maternal love.
Every child longs for a mother's love!
The two children seem to like Yun Qingran very much. So, will Yun Qingran mind being the two children's stepmother?
Jun Molin internally rejected the idea of remaining unmarried for life, but he was still conflicted about Yun Qingran's wishes!
"My river lantern floats the fastest." Jun Yanyan opened her eyes and clapped her hands happily as she looked at her river lantern.
"Yes, my sister's is the fastest." Jun An'an opened her eyes and nodded in agreement.
He was clearly the fastest, yet he blatantly lied and said his sister was the fastest. This kid, seemingly cool on the surface, actually has a soft heart and knows how to make his sister happy.
Yun Qingran wondered if Jun Molin really didn't want to open a childbirth training class to teach everyone how to give birth to such cute, sensible, and harmonious twins. The siblings she had seen fought fiercely, to the death, until the younger brother grew up and the sibling wars stopped.
"You two, stay away from the water." Yun Qingran grabbed the two children and pulled them back.
"Okay, sister."
The two children watched the river lanterns in the river, while Yun Qingran leaned back, arms crossed, against the tree behind her, her posture languid and her curves exquisite.
The night breeze gently caressed her hair, revealing her exquisitely beautiful face. Her fair and translucent skin was slightly pink, delicate and alluring, inspiring an irresistible urge to kiss her.
Sure enough, someone acted impulsively.
"Little beauty, are you lonely? Do you want your brother to help you relieve your loneliness? I promise I'll make you feel amazing." A drunken man walked over, acting recklessly and looking at Yun Qingran with lustful eyes.
My God, is this a fairy descended from heaven? If he could have his way with a woman like this, he'd be willing to die for her.
Seeing this scene from the darkness in the distance, Jun Molin felt a suffocating chill creeping over him.
Pei Chen, who was standing to the side, took two steps back and wished the drunkard a safe journey.
"Young man, you must be from out of town!" Yun Qingran smiled charmingly.
"Little beauty, how did you know? I am indeed from out of town, doing business in the capital. I'm incredibly wealthy. If you come with me, I guarantee you'll live a life of luxury." The drunkard, seeing an opportunity, stepped forward and reached out to touch Yun Qingran.
“If you were a local, you would know that I am not someone you can flirt with.” Yun Qingran said, then grabbed the man’s outstretched hand and threw him over her shoulder.
The man was instantly stunned. Before he could react, he was lifted up and slammed backward, then forward, then sideways, then in all directions! It was as if he was being smashed against something dirty.

For the first time, I feel sympathy for the pervert's plight!
