Chapter 175 What did you buy for Mom?
Zhang Fenfen immediately patted him on the shoulder and said, "Let's go eat in the main room. There's good food there."
Zhou Hai snatched the bowl from her hand and put it back in front of Zhou Bing, saying, "There's so much to do every day."
Zhou Bing was still just a child, not as cunning as her. As soon as the egg was put back in front of him, he started eating it heartily again.
After finishing the egg in a few bites, he happily drank the sugar water.
Zhang Fenfen glared at Zhou Hai several times.
But Zhou Hai ignored her and went back to tending the fire.
Zhou Lin and Wu Caifeng ignored her even more.
Zhang Fenfen stared for a while, then her eyes darted around before she turned and walked towards the main room.
But as soon as she reached the door of the main room, she saw Zhou Chan carrying a bowl out.
When the sweet egg soup was brought to the main room, Zhizhi originally wanted to share it with her sister-in-law, but Zhou Chan refused, reminding her, "My elder brother and sister-in-law will be coming over to eat here together later, so Mother specially cooked this sweet egg soup for you to have something to eat."
Zhizhi didn't say anything more, "Mom's kindness is appreciated, I will definitely not let anyone else benefit from it."
Then Zhizhi also ate the sweet egg soup with a "smack, smack". Although she didn't really like this sweet egg soup, she thought that if she didn't eat it, someone else would benefit from it, so she ate it in big bites.
They even drank all the sugar water.
So when Zhang Fenfen arrived, Zhou Chan had already gone to deliver the bowls.
"Sister-in-law," Zhou Chan greeted Zhang Fenfen.
Zhang Fenfen peeked at the bowl and pouted, "This mouth is still the mouth of this country bumpkin, it eats very fast."
Zhizhi was sitting in the main room when Zhang Fenfen stood at the door and said these words. She could hear them, and it wasn't in her nature to remain silent. So Zhizhi spoke up, "A country bumpkin's mouth? Sister-in-law, you're quite knowledgeable. You even know what a city mouth looks like?"
"You look like you're not good at eating!" Zhang Fenfen quickly retorted.
“Yes, it’s definitely not someone like my sister-in-law,” Zhizhi quickly chimed in.
She talked about Zhizhi, and Zhizhi didn't flinch, but when Zhizhi talked about her, she immediately snapped, "Who do you think tastes better?"
Zhizhi denied it, "Hmm? What are you thinking, sister-in-law?"
When did I say that?
"Aren't you overthinking it?"
Zhizhi shook her head in disapproval, saying, "I told you, sister-in-law, you definitely won't like to hear it. You're a bit petty!"
"We're sisters-in-law, we're just gossiping, why are you so suspicious!" Zhizhi said, covering her mouth and laughing so hard she was shaking.
This made Zhang Fenfen look like a crazy woman, her face flushed and her neck thick.
Zhou Chan glanced at her sister-in-law, who couldn't gain any advantage, before feeling relieved and going to the kitchen to deliver the bowls.
In the kitchen, Wu Caifeng saw the bowl she brought and asked, "Did your second sister-in-law finish eating this?"
Zhou Chan nodded.
"Did your sister-in-law go to the main room?" Wu Caifeng asked again.
Zhou Chan nodded.
Wu Caifeng took the bowl and said, "Go to the main room and keep an eye on things."
Zhou Chan nodded and left.
Inside the main room, Zhang Fenfen had already moved a stool and sat down, crossing her legs with a disdainful look.
Zhizhi ignored her and instead raised her own hand to look at it. Zhizhi thought to herself, "If only there were people doing manicures right now, how beautiful these delicate, white hands would look with manicures."
It was so bright it would blind Zhou Lin.
Zhou Lin sneezed in the kitchen.
Wu Caifeng retorted, "You're dressed too thinly. It's not like home in the city. It's cold at home. You should wear something thicker."
Zhou Lin rubbed his nose with the back of his hand. "It's not cold," he said, "it's just that my nose suddenly itches."
Two dishes, one of which is already ready, and we'll cook some noodles too. With someone tending the fire, it'll be quick.
In the main room, Zhizhi was discussing with her sister-in-law what nail polish colors would look good when Zhou Lin brought in two dishes and said, "Dinner is almost ready."
Zhou Chan immediately got up to help move the table, and Zhizhi also wanted to help, but Zhou Lin said, "There's nothing for you to do, you can sit down for a while!"
Hearing this, Zhang Fenfen sat even more firmly.
They don't even go to serve meals.
The first person to sit down at the table.
Although Zhizhi didn't help much, she ran to the kitchen and asked her mother-in-law in a very obsequious manner, "Mom, I'll bring the food."
Wu Caifeng naturally wouldn't let her carry it, saying, "With so many people here, what are you going to do? It's dark, you'll break it again. Go sit in the main room."
Then Zhou Lin carried two bowls and led her to the main room.
As soon as Wu Caifeng entered the main room, she saw her eldest daughter-in-law sitting in the seat of honor, and her expression immediately turned sour.
Zhou Hai put down his bowl and went to pull Zhang Fenfen, saying, "Are you a guest in our home? Why don't you sit here?"
Zhang Fenfen didn't move. "I'm not a guest, and there are no outsiders here. I'm the eldest in the family, what's wrong with me sitting here?"
Zhizhi didn't follow her example. Instead, she sat down next to Zhou Lin at the lower end of the table. Even when Wu Caifeng looked at her, she smiled and said, "Mom, you've been working hard all night. Please sit down."
As he spoke, he put food into Wu Caifeng's bowl, adding two slices of salted meat with each bite.
Wu Caifeng looked at her second daughter-in-law, then at her eldest daughter-in-law, and the difference in their social standing was immediately apparent.
Holding her bowl, Wu Caifeng sat down next to her eldest daughter-in-law, praising her younger daughter-in-law, "You silly girl, don't put any more food on my plate, don't put any more on my plate, you should eat more, it's the perfect time for you to nourish your body."
As she spoke, she also put meat on Zhizhi's plate.
Zhang Fenfen was even more upset when she saw this. There weren't many slices of meat in total, but the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law took several slices with one chop.
She quickly pulled her son down to sit and hurriedly put meat into their bowls.
This caused the eldest brother, Zhou Hai, to keep coughing and trying to wink at Zhang Fenfen, but Zhang Fenfen ignored him.
Upon seeing this, Zhizhi immediately started serving food to Zhou Lin and Zhou Chan, giving them just as many as Zhang Fenfen.
In the end, everyone had meat in their bowls except for the eldest brother, Zhou Hai.
Seeing that the meat was gone, Zhang Fenfen started picking at the scallion and egg mixture, putting the eggs into her and her son's bowls.
They still snatched the branches.
She didn't eat it herself; instead, she grabbed some and put it into Zhou Lin, Zhou Chan, and Wu Caifeng's bowls, saying as she did so, "Mom, Xiao Chan, you guys eat it, or it'll be gone soon."
Zhou Hai's face turned bright red with embarrassment.
He silently vowed to himself that he would never bring Zhang Fenfen to dinner with his family again; it would be too undignified.
Zhang Fenfen tried to grab and fight, but not only did she not get much, everyone had a problem with her.
Zhizhi also tried to grab and fight for it, but Wu Caifeng praised her, "You child, you only care about others, why don't you eat some too!"
She said she was going to give the egg in the bowl to Zhizhi, but Zhizhi refused. She pointed to her stomach and said, "I just ate a little, so I'm not that hungry now."
These words gave Zhang Fenfen another opportunity to chime in, "That's true, Mom favors you. She gives you all the good food, so it's okay if you eat less."
Zhizhi immediately retorted, "Our mom is good to me because I'm good to her too! I know I should share the good food with Mom, and I even know to buy her clothes!"
“I bought my mom a cotton-padded coat in Beijing for 180 yuan as a New Year’s gift.”
"Sister-in-law, what did you buy for Mom for the New Year?" Zhizhi took a sip of noodle soup and looked up at her.
Actually, in a normal relationship between sisters-in-law, Zhizhi shouldn't say such things, because it's a bit conspicuous. You might not have what others don't, or your mother-in-law might indeed be biased. Your words would be considered stirring up trouble.
But Zhizhi felt no psychological pressure at all when talking to someone like Zhang Fenfen.
Upon hearing "one hundred and eighty yuan," Zhang Fenfen's half-open mouth immediately shut.
