Chapter 7 Departure
Then, she held Wu Caifeng's hand and said, "Mom, I understand your feelings for me."
"I know, this is because you care about me and Zhou Lin."
"But I can't be ungrateful."
"I've been married into this family for two years, and to be honest, I haven't been filial to you at all."
"I am already very touched that you are willing to help me without holding a grudge."
“This money,” Xie Zhizhi waved the thirty yuan in her hand, “is enough for me.”
"I don't want the extra, you pack it up."
As she spoke, she stuffed Wu Caifeng's hand, which was holding the money, into her pocket.
Wu Caifeng hesitated, "This..."
Xie Zhizhi said again, "Mom, just keep pretending!"
"Otherwise, I'll have to pay you back later."
Since she had already said that, Wu Caifeng didn't insist anymore. "If you really don't want it, then I won't give it to you."
Xie Zhizhi nodded and let go of her hand. "Yes, really not."
“This is enough,” Xie Zhizhi said, putting the thirty yuan in her hand into her pocket.
Wu Caifeng looked at her bowl of noodle soup that had no oil or salt and said, "Why don't you come to my place and eat there?"
"I still have some eggs saved up, I'll fry you two eggs."
Xie Zhizhi immediately shook her head.
The original owner had sent all the eggs she had saved up over the past two years, regardless of size, back to her parents' home. She hadn't even given her mother-in-law a single eggshell. How could she possibly eat someone else's eggs now?
"No, Mom, it would be a waste not to eat all these dumplings I made."
Wu Caifeng didn't say anything more.
However, in the evening, he secretly brought her ten eggs.
The eggs were hidden under Wu Caifeng's clothes; she came bent over.
Upon reaching the main room and seeing Xie Zhizhi, the old lady finally straightened up. "Second son's wife, go find a porcelain basin for holding vegetables. I stole some eggs for you."
Xie Zhizhi's eyes widened. "Mom, where did you steal those eggs?"
"Pah, pah, pah!!" Wu Caifeng spat a few times, then sighed, "This person really can't do anything he's ashamed of. Look at how incoherent I am."
“I was afraid your sister-in-law would find out that I was secretly bringing you eggs. I was so worried that I ended up being accused of stealing eggs.”
"I didn't steal, I didn't steal anyone's, I saved it all myself."
"Not many, just ten. You can cook them when you get up tomorrow morning and eat them on the way."
"Otherwise you'll go hungry on the way."
"Mom..." Xie Zhizhi called out, her face full of emotion.
Seeing her daughter-in-law looking at her with such emotion, the old lady felt a little uncomfortable. "Don't worry, I've given your sister-in-law plenty before."
"Give it to you...this is the first time I've given it to you," the old lady said guiltily, not daring to look her daughter-in-law in the eye.
Her original intention was simply to prevent her younger daughter-in-law from being too moved, but as she spoke...
Wu Caifeng: How old are you? You still can't control your mouth?
Xie Zhizhi didn't care about that.
There is an emotional bond between people.
What was the original owner's relationship with her mother-in-law?
People would definitely prefer to give the eggs to the one they find pleasing.
Moreover, those eggs weren't for her daughter-in-law Zhang Fenfen; they were purely for her grandson.
Therefore, Xie Zhizhi wouldn't care about this.
So Xie Zhizhi said, "It's normal for you to feed it to your grandson!"
Seeing that Xie Zhizhi understood, Wu Caifeng breathed a sigh of relief and looked gratified.
Her daughter-in-law is really smart.
"Once you and Lao Er have a child, don't worry, I will be impartial and give Xiao Bing as many eggs as I would to you."
"If you and the second son don't come back, I'll save it up. You can take it with you whenever you come back," the old lady promised.
Xie Zhizhi nodded.
With the eggs given to her by Wu Caifeng, Xie Zhizhi didn't eat dumpling soup that night. Instead, she steamed some rice and steamed some eggs for herself.
She doesn't do things that are self-destructive or that she doesn't force herself to endure hardship.
After eating and drinking my fill, washing up, and climbing into bed, my body, exhausted from a long day, drifted off to sleep.
If you go to bed early, you'll wake up early.
The next day, just as dawn was breaking, Xie Zhizhi was awakened by the sounds of roosters crowing and dogs barking.
Looking at the sky just beginning to lighten, Xie Zhizhi got out of bed.
After washing her face with well water, Xie Zhizhi was fully awake.
After regaining her senses, Xie Zhizhi went to the kitchen, added water to the pot, and boiled all eight remaining eggs. She ate two for breakfast, and put the remaining six in a teacup. She then wrapped the teacup tightly with a towel, and left the courtyard with the contents of the teacup.
After leaving the courtyard, she carried her things and took the keys to Wu Caifeng's place.
In rural areas, when families with many sons divide the property, the elderly usually live with the youngest son.
Because the older ones usually enter first, the elderly have already been helping them for some time.
Therefore, after the family splits up, it is assumed that the younger son will still need to be helped for a few more years.
However, on the Zhou family side, in order to make it easier to support her maternal family, the original owner was not willing to have a mother-in-law and a sister-in-law at all.
Wu Caifeng also mentioned that she has an elderly daughter who wants to live alone.
So she took the two old houses in the east wing, near Zhou Hai's house, and lived alone with her daughter Zhou Chan.
Xie Zhizhi had just arrived at Wu Caifeng's house with her things when she saw Wu Caifeng locking the door and preparing to leave.
"Mom," Xie Zhizhi called out.
Wu Caifeng turned her head and saw that it was Xie Zhizhi, so she said, "I was just saying I was going to your place!"
"Do you need me to take care of the chickens in your yard?" Wu Caifeng asked, not daring to look Xie Zhizhi in the eye, afraid that Xie Zhizhi would scold her and try to take her things.
But Xie Zhizhi, upon hearing her words, simply playfully extended her finger.
A red string was hooked on her slender finger, from which two keys dangled. "Well, I came here to ask you for a favor, Mom."
Upon seeing the key, Wu Caifeng immediately raised her hand and patted her chest, "Don't worry, I'll definitely take good care of it for you."
As he spoke, he reached out and took the keys from her hand.
Then, he glanced at the package in her hand, "Is everything packed?"
"Um!"
Did you bring all the eggs?
"Um!"
“Then I’ll take you to ride the tractor,” Wu Caifeng said, and was about to go with Xie Zhizhi to the village entrance to wait for the tractor.
Xie Zhizhi refused, saying, "No need, Mom, I can go by myself."
"You just need to take good care of the house for me."
Xie Zhizhi was about to leave when she turned around. Then she thought for a moment and turned back. "I'm leaving now. If my family comes, don't be polite to them."
As long as Wu Caifeng doesn't care about her as her daughter-in-law, in this day and age, people from other villages won't gain any advantage by coming into this village.
Seeing that Xie Zhizhi was speaking seriously, Wu Caifeng nodded.
"Okay, I'm off then, Mom!"
Be careful on the road!
"Okay, I understand," Xie Zhizhi turned and left, waving her hand behind Wu Caifeng.
Watching her daughter-in-law walk further and further away, Wu Caifeng couldn't help but say, "When you go, you must live a good life with your second son!"
"Okay, Mom," Xie Zhizhi replied loudly.
We boarded a tractor at the village entrance, then a bus at the commune, which took us around the area before heading to the county.
They picked up another person in the county before heading to the city.
By the time we arrived in the city, it was almost 2 p.m.
Fortunately, the bus station was built right next to the train station, and Xie Zhizhi arrived at the train station not long after carrying her things.
When she bought the ticket, the ticket seller at the train station told her, "There's only one train left to Jiangcheng, departing at 7 PM. Do you want it?"
