Chapter 26: Dissension

Only Gu Zheng looked at He Buping a few more times, with a thoughtful look on his face.

At the end of the morning court session, He Qing also happened to emerge from Kunhua Palace. Since it was close to Ziping Palace, news spread quickly. Although Empress Dowager Zhang didn't care about government affairs, her status was still high, so naturally, someone would pass on these news, making her much more informed than He Qing.

Upon hearing that the Empress Dowager had changed her mind and was willing to send troops to reinforce Ruizhou, Empress Dowager Zhang couldn't help but chant a Buddhist prayer.

After she finished reading, she turned around and saw He Qing. She showed a bit of embarrassment on her face, "I am sorry for offending you. Please don't blame me, Master."

She actually chanted the Buddha's name in front of a true monk who had ordained as a nun. Isn't that an offense?

He Qing herself didn't seem particularly concerned. After all, her becoming a nun was merely a temporary solution. Although she never gave up studying the Daoist scriptures, any claims of sincerity were pure deception. Given that, she naturally didn't mind Empress Dowager Zhang's minor misstep.

"It's okay," she smiled at Empress Dowager Zhang. Suddenly, a thought popped into her mind, and she blurted out, "The three religions are one family."

"What do you mean?" Empress Dowager Zhang was very interested.

He Qing had no choice but to explain, "Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism have been passed down to this day, and they have influenced and integrated with each other. Many of their concepts have the same origin and are difficult to distinguish. Therefore, great people who truly study the truth often have a good understanding of all three schools. If you look closely, aren't they all one family?"

As she spoke, she gave several examples. Not only Empress Dowager Zhang, but even the palace maids serving her listened with great interest.

The conversation inevitably delayed the time. When she said goodbye and came out, she saw people coming and going at the door of Ziping Palace. It was just after the morning court session, and the Empress Dowager summoned the important ministers here to continue the meeting.

From a distance, the figures were unclear, and only the Grand Empress Dowager's procession was the most eye-catching. He Qing's gaze dropped slightly, landing on the person standing one step behind the Grand Empress Dowager.

In her previous life, He Qing was a princess controlled by the maids, and all affairs were handled by them. She had never seen He Buping before, and now she was too far away to see his face clearly, but she had a very strong premonition: that was He Buping.

Knowing about this person is one thing, but seeing him with your own eyes is another.

She had to use all her strength to restrain herself from impulsively going over to cause trouble.

He Qing stopped where he was and did not leave immediately, even though everyone over there had already entered the hall and was no longer visible.

Just as she was lost in thought, a young eunuch suddenly ran over from the Ziping Palace. He came to He Qing, bowed hurriedly, stuffed a note into her hand, and then quickly ran back.

He Qing was brought back to his senses by this sudden change. He subconsciously lowered his head and opened the note, and saw the words written on it in a flamboyant and hasty manner: I wonder what the true master came up with facing the scorching sun?

There was no signature, but He Qing somehow knew who sent the note.

She was shocked at first, at Gu Zheng's audacity. This was happening right under the nose of the Grand Empress Dowager, and he had actually bribed a young eunuch to deliver the note. If anyone discovered this, it would be disastrous for both of them.

But so many things had happened in the past six months, and He Qing was no longer the He Qing of the past, so that little bit of surprise was quickly suppressed.

Not to mention that the court officials were originally trying to share power with the imperial family, and there were countless subtle overt and covert struggles among them, even she herself was now making her own calculations under the nose of the Empress Dowager. The majesty of the royal family sounded intimidating, but in fact, only when you were close did you realize that they were just ordinary people.

Even if the emperor is not strong enough, he may be suppressed by his ministers, let alone the Empress Dowager, a woman who is not very familiar with state affairs?

Besides, if Gu Zheng didn’t have such courage, he wouldn’t be Gu Zheng.

Then He Qing finally reacted and realized that he was sweating all over and his clothes were completely wet.

The weather had gradually turned cooler in August, but the autumn heat still radiated its might. Today was a beautiful day, and He Qing had been standing under the scorching sun for so long, sweating profusely, but he didn't feel hot. Instead, he felt a chill emanating from his body.

It was not until this moment that she seemed to finally feel the warmth of the sun, which scorched her body, and in a moment she broke out in sweat.

As the sweat broke out, He Qing realized that his whole body was weak and sore, but the coldness had completely disappeared, leaving only the relaxation as if he had been exhausted.

She clenched the note in her hand, glanced in the direction of Ziping Palace again, and then turned and walked towards the harem.

He Qing didn't know whether Gu Zheng had noticed anything or not. But the fact that he had sent such a note specifically, and that it was about such an insignificant matter, made He Qing see a bit of consideration that was not meant to be shared with outsiders.

However, speaking of Ge Ri, a bunch of optical knowledge popped up in He Qing's mind.

How could she be perfunctory with Gu Xueshi's enthusiasm? She should give him a few more questions to help him make further progress on the path of science.

The journey from Kunhua Palace back to Wendao Palace wasn't short, requiring her to cross the entire Imperial Garden. But He Qing was familiar with this route, and normally it never felt far. She had nothing important to do, so spending a little time on the road wasn't a problem. Besides, the scenery along the way was beautiful, and the ever-changing views were truly worth savoring. But on this day, she felt like she was never going to get there.

Several times along the way, He Qing wanted to stop and rest, but even she herself couldn't explain what exactly drove her to move forward step by step without stopping.

Until she entered the Wendao Palace, she even spoke a few words to Yuping with a normal expression. It was not until she entered her own room that she suddenly fell on the bed as if she had lost all her strength. She seemed to have used up all her strength and could not even lift a finger.
