Chapter 32 Extravagance

Only the children were carefreely running back and forth among the various tables and chairs, chasing and playing with each other, adding a bit of liveliness to this seemingly absurd scene.

Binhua suddenly appeared in the ordinary life. The expressions on many people's faces did not seem to be responding to a disaster, but rather a little excited and curious, as if they were looking for something interesting.

As he watched, the restlessness in He Qing's heart gradually disappeared.

These people may not understand scientific principles, but they draw on their own experiences. Only by looking closely can you see that life is full of bright spots. Even the most ordinary people are striving to live a better life.

Then she unexpectedly met an acquaintance here.

"True Master." Gu Zheng noticed her and walked over to salute her.

He Qing turned aside and said, "Since we are out, please don't be so polite, Master Gu."

Gu Zheng stood up, glanced behind her, and then asked, "Master, why are you here? Where are the people following you?"

"I was bored, so I came out for a walk without anyone with me." He Qing said, "Why is Lord Gu here too?" He was also not wearing an official uniform, and had no one with him. He was just wandering around here alone.

Gu Zheng said, "My home is nearby."

He Qing nodded, and the two of them fell silent. Although He Qing had a good impression of Gu Zheng, in person, he didn't know how to talk to him or what to say. Perhaps because he had read too many comments in his memory, he had also mentally regarded Gu Zheng as a significant figure, which made it difficult to grasp how to get along with him.

Gu Zheng took the initiative to ask, "Since Master Zhen is here, would you like to come to my humble abode and have a cup of tea?"

He Qing wanted to refuse, but then thought it was a rare opportunity to get to know Gu Zheng, so he nodded hesitantly. The two of them walked around the crowd and turned into an alley. After walking for a while, they finally arrived at Gu Zheng's home.

Remote and quiet were He Qing's first impressions of the courtyard. Four or five trees were planted in the small courtyard, almost completely shading the house, creating a very quiet and peaceful atmosphere. Upon closer inspection, he discovered that they were all fruit trees.

A peach tree, a plum tree, and a pear tree, all laden with green fruits, hanging so heavily that they almost bent the branches.

A pomegranate tree is still in bloom, and a ginkgo tree is full of green.

Beneath the peach tree stood a set of stone tables and chairs, quite an interesting sight. He Qing noticed it and was about to go over, but after a moment's hesitation, she asked, "I wonder if anyone else is at Lord Gu's house?" If there were any elders present, she would be the one to go in and greet them.

"There are only two old servants." Gu Zheng said.

He Qing went straight to the stone table and chairs under the peach tree with confidence. As soon as he sat down, an old woman brought out tea.

Gu Zheng then sat down opposite He Qing and asked, "Master, I just realized that most of the people in the capital can't stand the turmoil and just want to live a peaceful life. Even if they were asked to leave the city, they have nowhere else to go. All their belongings are here and they can't leave."

He Qing looked at him in surprise and nodded, but felt a little confused, wondering why he brought up this.

Gu Zheng added, "Common people ask for very little. They only care about the present day. No matter how hard it is, as long as they have a place and don't have to struggle all the time, they will be satisfied. They don't understand or care about the things that happen in the court."

"What exactly is Lord Gu trying to say?" He Qing was puzzled. She had a feeling Gu Zheng had more to say from his tone and demeanor, but her wisdom was limited, so she couldn't really understand.

Gu Zheng choked when he heard this, and he almost suspected that He Qing really didn't understand, or was deliberately saying this to provoke him.

Anyone who didn't know the situation would have thought that the Empress Dowager relied heavily on Xue Xianggong, that there was no rift between the monarch and his subjects, and that they would definitely work together to support the government. However, at the Xue residence, upon seeing Gu Zheng, Xue Zhizhi smiled and sighed, "Seeing Yu Sheng, I can finally put my worries to rest."

Gu Zheng was a little surprised. "Could it be that Prime Minister Xue mentioned me to the Empress Dowager?"

"I only mentioned it in a memorial." Xue Zhidao stroked his beard. "The Empress Dowager's methods and courage are far greater than I imagined. It is a blessing for our dynasty. With Yu Sheng's assistance, I think we can rest easy!"

"As a student, I still need the guidance of my predecessors." Gu Zheng said with his head down.

Xue Zhidao smiled and said, "I'm old now. It's time to make room for you young people."

"Prime Minister Xue is still in good health. It's too early to bring up these things now." Gu Zheng did not lose his mind because of the other party's praise.

Indeed, Prime Minister Xue had mentioned him in his memorial, and the Empress Dowager had sent him to deliver this imperial edict, indicating that he would be used in the future. Xue knew that his time in the court would not last long. But no matter what, it would not be this year. At least, we would have to wait until the child in Empress Dowager Zhang's belly was born before we could know the outcome.

So no one can tell what the ending will be.

The two men really had no friendship. Even though Xue Zhidao had written a letter to Gu Zheng before, asking him to speak for the empress dowager in the court, and seemed to be recommending him to replace his position, Gu Zheng was grateful for this favor, but he also did not forget that before that, it was Xue Zhidao who had been suppressing him and not letting him stand out.

Although it was well-intentioned, people were worried that he was young and impulsive, and if he rose too quickly, he would be easily defeated. But it was more because of their different political views.

It is an indisputable fact that there are huge differences between the two in all aspects.

So, having said this, Gu Zheng stood up and said goodbye. Xue Zhidao walked two steps away, but he repeatedly declined. As he turned to leave, he suddenly remembered someone and turned to ask, "Prime Minister Xue, do you know the Supreme Master Huiru?"

"Of course I know that. The title of Princess Anping was handed down by me. This princess is a miserable person. She is like an invisible person in the palace. No one would think of her unless something happens. She is very low-key and there are few rumors about her outside. Why?" Xue Zhidao looked puzzled.

Gu Zheng shook his head, "I saw it in the palace today, and suddenly remembered it."

In fact, he is knowledgeable and well-informed. As a member of the royal family, how could he not remember He Qing's life?

Born in the last years of Emperor Hui's reign, she was less than a year old when he passed away and was succeeded by Emperor Ling. This emperor, who cared little for the throne, naturally paid no attention to his infant sister, not even bestowing her with a title, allowing her to grow up in obscurity. It wasn't until his nephew, Emperor Xian, ascended the throne that he discovered there was another young aunt in the palace. He bestowed upon her the title of Grand Princess Anping, briefly bringing her into the public eye, but she was quickly forgotten.
