Chapter 29 Rescue [VIP]
Chapter Summary: "You can't afford to bet on me, Mr. Xu!"
Xu Luchuan was surrounded by a crowd of people, and he was clearly a little reserved. But everyone was so enthusiastic that he couldn't break free no matter what he tried. Suddenly, a familiar voice rang in his ears, and Liu Shiyu appeared before Xu Luchuan like a savior.
He looked down and saw Liu Shiyu carefully protecting the bowl of hot soup in her arms in the middle of the crowd.
Xu Luchuan instinctively reached out to protect her, and Liu Shiyu looked up.
The two looked at each other, and Liu Shiyu laughed heartily. Xu Luchuan took the item from her hand, grabbed her hand, and said to the crowd, "Thank you all for your kindness, please excuse me."
After speaking, Xu Luchuan led Liu Shiyu away under the watchful eyes of everyone.
Liu Shiyu followed behind him, feeling the warmth from his palm, a warmth that traveled from his palm all the way into his heart.
She unconsciously tightened her grip on his hand.
After leaving the thatched hut, Xu Luchuan led Liu Shiyu to the roadside.
"Wait here for me, I'll go get a stool." Xu Luchuan said, trying to let go of her hand, but Liu Shiyu was distracted and held on tightly. Xu Luchuan turned around, "Let go."
Liu Shiyu was taken aback by his words and asked, "Where are you going?"
Xu Luchuan looked at the man helplessly; he realized the man wasn't listening to him at all. So, he deliberately said, "Please sit down."
"Where should I sit?" Liu Shiyu glanced at the dirty ground with a look of disgust. "Sit here? It's so dirty."
"So, you knew too?" Xu Luchuan said, handing the things back to Liu Shiyu. "Take it, let go. I'll go get you a stool now."
"Then you should go quickly."
Liu Shiyu finally understood what he meant, and quickly let go of his hand, taking the things from him. Xu Luchuan then got up and went to the thatched shed to bring over two stools.
The two of them sat down by an unnamed path in Shou County.
Holding the hot soup, Liu Shiyu looked at the lone camellia tree blooming on the dilapidated roadside and sighed, "Xu Luchuan, do you think everything here will get better?"
Suddenly recalling the optimistic and resolute smiles of everyone inside the thatched hut, Liu Shiyu felt a surge of guilt.
Xu Luchuan turned his gaze to Liu Shiyu. He understood her distress, but didn't know how to comfort her. He could only tear off a large piece of the dry biscuit and hand it to her, saying, "Everyone is working hard, things will definitely get better. Eat up, and then get back to work."
"There's not much food, you eat it. I'll just have the soup." Liu Shiyu smiled and refused the dry biscuit Xu Luchuan offered.
As they were talking, Lian Yue, who had been hiding in the shadows, suddenly appeared before them, cupping her hands and saying, "My lady and my lord, let me prepare some food for you. How can these things fill your stomachs?"
Liu Shiyu looked at Lian Yue, shook his head, and said, "No need, you may leave."
"My lady." Lian Yue called her "my lady" so fluently that Liu Shiyu didn't say anything more, only saying, "You may leave."
Unable to persuade them for months, he had no choice but to turn and leave.
Xu Luchuan witnessed everything without saying a word. Although he didn't understand why Liu Shiyu would wrong herself, after Lian Yue left, he still took the soup bowl from her hand, stuffed the dry bread into it, and said, "You eat it, I like to drink soup."
“But I’ve already drunk this soup…” Before Liu Shiyu could finish speaking, Xu Luchuan picked up the hot soup and drank it all in one gulp.
Staring blankly at the clean bottom of the bowl, then looking down at the dry biscuit in her hand, Liu Shiyu couldn't help but lower her voice and say, "They really drank it all, not a single drop left..."
Xu Luchuan didn't pay any attention, casually put down the bowl, and urged, "What are you still standing there for?"
Upon hearing this, Liu Shiyu sighed and said nothing, then picked up the pancake and began to eat it carefully.
Time passed quietly as she swallowed the dry biscuit again and again, telling herself she should do better.
Seeing Liu Shiyu's worried expression, Xu Luchuan couldn't help but ask curiously, "Liu Shiyu, what didn't you do or investigate during your trip to Shou County? Why are you here helping disaster victims? What's your purpose? You're not just doing some charity work, are you?"
“I’m looking for a weakness.” Liu Shiyu didn’t turn around, his eyes instantly turning ruthless. “It’s been five years. From the moment he stepped onto this land, he has already defiled it. The late emperor may have let him go, but I won’t.”
Although Liu Shiyu did not say who the person was, Xu Luchuan already understood.
"A weakness? Are you confident?" He rested his elbows on his knees and leaned down. Liu Shiyu whispered beside him, "No, but now is the best time."
Xu Luchuan turned around; this was the first time he had a changed opinion of Liu Shiyu.
But this admiration didn't last long. Liu Shiyu suddenly pressed herself against him face to face. Xu Luchuan was so frightened that he tried to get up and run away, but she held him back tightly.
"What are you doing?" Xu Luchuan questioned, afraid that Liu Shiyu would surprise him again like last time. Liu Shiyu quietly approached him, stopping near his ear, "Don't move, look over there at the alley entrance, isn't there someone lurking around suspiciously?"
Xu Luchuan glanced instinctively at the spot Liu Shiyu had pointed to, and sure enough, someone was hiding behind the wall. He said, "Should I go take a look?"
"Are you sure you can handle this? Don't alert him." Liu Shiyu said with some worry. Xu Luchuan straightened up. "If he runs away, have the Court of Justice kick me out."
Liu Shiyu loosened her grip on his hand and comforted him, "I believe in you. Be careful. Stay safe."
Xu Luchuan took a detour, but the man remained focused on the thatched hut. Only after Xu Luchuan reached the man from behind and pressed him down did Liu Shiyu get up and walk towards the alley entrance.
Upon closer inspection, Liu Shiyu discovered that the man was covered in injuries and was making incoherent noises, but she couldn't make out a single coherent sentence.
Liu Shiyu squatted down in surprise and said to Xu Luchuan, "Let him go."
But as soon as Xu Luchuan let go, the man rushed forward, snatched the dry biscuit from Liu Shiyu's hand, and began to wolf it down. Liu Shiyu, however, was not intimidated by the man's sudden appearance; instead, she was extremely displeased with his act of stealing the biscuit.
"Hey? Why are you stealing my pancake?! Little Green gave it to me."
Helpless, Xu Luchuan stepped forward to shield Liu Shiyu behind him and pressed the man for answers, "Tell me, who are you? Where are you from?"
The man didn't answer, and finished off the remaining cake in his hand.
Liu Shiyu looked at Xu Luchuan and said, "His injuries are quite serious. Why don't we take him to the thatched hut to check on his wounds first?"
Upon hearing that he was to be taken away to examine his injuries, the man suddenly reacted violently, seemingly trying to escape. Fortunately, Xu Luchuan was quick-witted and stopped the man in two steps.
Now, Liu Shiyu became completely suspicious. She habitually spoke in a commanding tone, saying, "Take the person to the straw shed."
As soon as she finished speaking, Liu Shiyu turned around gracefully, but Xu Luchuan remained behind her, holding the man captive.
Liu Shiyu sensed something was amiss and turned around, only to see Xu Luchuan looking at her with displeasure. Liu Shiyu then realized what was happening and quickly put on a smiling face, saying softly, "Please, sir, help me take this person to the thatched hut, would you mind? Thank you so much!"
Xu Luchuan walked past Liu Shiyu with the man in his arms. Liu Shiyu looked at the familiar smugness in Xu Luchuan's back and wished he could punch him a couple of times to vent his anger.
After walking several dozen steps, Xu Luchuan realized that Liu Shiyu hadn't followed, so he turned around and asked, "Do you also need someone to escort you to leave?"
"No!" Liu Shiyu strode over angrily. "You can't afford to bet on me, Mr. Xu!"
Xu Luchuan was puzzled; what was she angry about? Women's minds are truly hard to fathom.
Liu Shiyu stormed off angrily.
Back under the thatched hut, Xu Luchuan laid the man on the straw mat. Liu Shiyu went to the old man and asked, "Sir, this man is seriously injured. Could you please take a look at him?"
The old man remained calm and composed. He glanced at Liu Shiyu, then turned to look at the person on the ground, saying nothing. He deftly picked up a handkerchief from the table, wiped his hands, and turned to leave.
The man still resisted in every way, and Xu Luchuan had no choice but to press him down in order to prevent him from hurting anyone.
Liu Shiyu followed the old man back to the straw mat, bent down and looked directly into the eyes of the man in front of her, which were filled with fear and hidden under his messy hair.
"Who are you? And what are you afraid of?"
Liu Shiyu asked in a low voice. When her gaze swept over him, he looked away.
“But I don’t care who you are, where you come from, or what your purpose is. Your suffering or your grudges, whether they are directed at me or not, it doesn’t matter. I just hope that before everything is resolved, you can still have the opportunity to speak out.”
In the prison of the Court of Justice, Liu Shiyu had seen countless pairs of such eyes.
She couldn't be wrong; unlike the other injured people in the hut, he harbored an unspeakable secret.
"Let him go." Liu Shiyu's words had an effect, and the man stopped struggling. Xu Luchuan slowly released his grip. Standing up again, Liu Shiyu respectfully bowed to the old man, "Thank you for your trouble, sir."
The old man remained silent, then stepped forward to treat the man.
About 45 minutes later, with Guangbai's help, the old man finished bandaging and securing the man's wounds and got up.
"Thank you for your help, sir. How are his injuries?" Liu Shiyu went to express his gratitude, but the old man waved his hand and said, "I only cared about saving him. Let Guangbai tell you the rest."
"Thank you for your trouble, sir." Liu Shiyu didn't ask any more questions and watched the old man leave.
When they returned to the shop, the man had already closed his eyes and fallen asleep. Liu Shiyu looked up and noticed Guang Bai's hesitant expression, so he said, "There's no one else here, young master, please speak your mind."
Guangbai looked around and said in a low voice, "The person my wife saved... there's something wrong with him..."
