Chapter 226 Admission
He spoke with absolute certainty, and the facts were indeed as he said.
After several anxious days, in the late January evening, Gu Xiao returned home from get off work and went to the study to find Nan Zhiyi.
He handed her a brown paper document bag.
"I passed. I passed the physical exam and the background check. Now I just have to wait for the admission notice."
Nan Zhiyi carefully opened the file bag.
Inside was a political review conclusion form for college admissions in Beijing. In the political review conclusion column, the penmanship was neat and clear, stating "Can be admitted," and below it was the official political review seal of the admissions office and a clear steel stamp.
"This conclusion form is in multiple copies."
Gu Xiao explained from the side, "One copy will be stored in your college entrance examination file by the admissions office; another copy will be handled by the organization department responsible for political review. Your file is with you in the military and is stored in the family file management office of the cadre department of the political department, where they will include it in your official personal file; this copy is a certificate given to you, so keep it safe, as it may be required for future enrollment."
He continued, “Once you are admitted to the university, the Political Department will transfer your personal file to the university’s personnel department. You don’t need to bring your file when you register; just bring your admission notice, household registration transfer certificate, and this ‘political review certificate’ to complete the procedures. The university will conduct a file review; this is a routine procedure.”
Nan Zhiyi's fingertips trembled slightly as she traced the clear steel stamp.
This thin sheet of paper, though heavy as a thousand pounds, signifies that the gloom of the past has been completely dispelled.
She looked up, her eyes glistening with tears, and threw herself into his arms. "Gu Xiao, thank you, you've worked so hard..."
Before she could finish speaking, Gu Xiao wrapped his arm around her waist, leaned down, and gently bit her lip with his warm lips, silencing her unfinished words of thanks.
"Don't say thank you. I'm your man, it's only right and proper for me to do anything for you, why say such things."
He gently wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes with his fingertips, "Now, just relax and wait for the acceptance letter to be delivered to your door."
Nan Zhiyi wiped away her tears and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I know, I'm very happy..."
Xiaoman, who was playing with building blocks on the playmat, saw her parents hugging and immediately ran over, babbling and rubbing against Nan Zhiyi's legs, crying, "Mommy...hug...Daddy...hug..."
Gu Xiao looked down at the spoilsport, feeling both helpless and amused. He deliberately put on a stern face and said to Nan Zhiyi, "Look, it's a good thing we only had one child. This little thing is such a nuisance, he can't have a moment's peace."
Nan Zhiyi squatted down and hugged her soft son, kissing his cheek: "Our Xiaoman is the best. Daddy was just saying that and pretending to dislike you. Mommy loves our Xiaoman the most."
She pretended to pick up Xiaoman.
Gu Xiao reached out and took Xiaoman from him, holding him firmly in his arms: "Put your things away, I'll take him downstairs to play for a while, you go about your business."
He knew she needed some time alone to process this immense joy and relief.
Nan Zhiyi nodded and carefully put the political background check certificate back into the room.
When she came out again, she changed into her coat and said to Gu Xiao, "I'm going out to send a telegram to Aunt Feng and Yue Ran to tell them the good news."
Gu Xiao wanted to say that he would go and distribute it, since the snow outside was melting and the ground was slippery, but seeing the joyful light in her eyes, he knew that she definitely wanted to do it herself, so he only told her, "Be careful on the road and watch your step."
"Okay."
Nan Zhiyi walked briskly out of the courtyard gate.
The snow that had fallen in the past few days had melted away, leaving the roads slippery and muddy, and the air crisp and fresh.
In her eyes, everything in winter became exceptionally lovely: the glistening icicles under the eaves, the sparrows chirping on the branches, and even the puddles on the roadside reflected her incredibly bright mood.
She went to the post office in the compound, asked for telegram paper, and wrote:
"Aunt Feng has passed the political review and is awaiting good news."
The telegram was handed back to the staff.
Nan Zhiyi could imagine that after receiving the telegram, Aunt Feng would excitedly chant "Amitabha," then hug her daughter, laughing and sighing at the same time.
Now, the day she and Yue Ran reunite in the capital is drawing ever closer.
The days of waiting for the admission notice felt incredibly long, yet they passed in the blink of an eye.
The sun shone brightly that day, its warmth bathing the courtyard.
Nan Zhiyi understood the meaning the moment she heard the words "registered mail"!
She suddenly stood up, not even bothering to put on her slippers properly, and rushed out of the living room, leaving Xiaoman blinking her big eyes, curiously watching her mother's back.
She walked quickly across the courtyard and opened the gate.
The postman was setting up his old-fashioned bicycle when he saw Nan Zhiyi arrive. He quickly found a large kraft paper envelope with the words "Beijing University" clearly printed in red on the top and the school's emblem. Below that, the words "Admission Notice" were written in slightly smaller characters.
"Comrade Nan Zhiyi, congratulations! The admission notice from Beijing University is sent by registered mail. I would appreciate it if you could sign it."
Nan Zhiyi suppressed her excited heartbeat, took the delivery slip from the postman, and signed her name.
"Thank you, comrade!" She took the heavy letter and hugged it tightly to her chest.
"You're welcome! Here's another telegram for you, which also needs your signature!"
Nan Zhiyi took the telegram receipt from the postman and carefully signed her name again.
After watching the postman leave, she eagerly unfolded the telegram and read: "My sister has been accepted to Peking University and will be going to Beijing immediately."
This is truly a double celebration!
She took the registered letter and telegram containing the admission notice back to the room, carefully put them in the drawer, then picked up Xiaoman and excitedly spun her around.
"Xiaoman! Gu Zhao! Mommy's a college student now! At Beijing University! Your Aunt Yueran is coming to Beijing too! Aren't you happy?"
Xiaoman was amused by her mother's sudden enthusiasm and spinning around, and waved her little hands, saying, "Mommy... Feifei... more!"
Nan Zhiyi was in a great mood. She hugged him and spun him around several times until they were both dizzy and fell onto the sofa with a laugh.
Hearing the noise in the kitchen, Sister Zhang peeked out and saw the radiance on Nan Zhiyi's face. She guessed most of it: "Sister-in-law, has the admission notice arrived?"
Nan Zhiyi smiled brightly: "We've arrived, Sister Zhang, Peking University."
"Oh! This is wonderful! This is the greatest joy of all!"
Sister Zhang rubbed her apron, her face beaming. "This absolutely has to be a celebration! We'll cook some good dishes tonight, and when Minister Gu comes back, you can have a proper feast! I'll go to the grocery store and the farmers' market this afternoon to see if I can buy some more good vegetables and meat!"
Nan Zhiyi felt a warmth in her heart: "Okay, then I'll trouble you to make the arrangements."
"What's so hard about this? I'm overjoyed!"
As she spoke, Sister Zhang hurried back to the kitchen to check on the lunch in the pot.
