Chapter 156 Xiao Wu
Gu Xiao pulled up a chair and sat between Nan Zhiyi's hospital bed and the cot next to it where the little one was sleeping.
"Go to sleep, don't think about anything."
He stroked her fingers.
Nan Zhiyi looked at the bloodshot eyes in his eyes: "Aren't you sleepy? Why don't you get some sleep too?"
Gu Xiao shook his head: "When we're on a mission, it's common to go for days and nights without sleep, so I'm not tired. Just looking at you makes me feel energetic."
Nan Zhiyi smiled, a glimmer of light appearing on her pale face: "You're such a chatterbox..."
She finally couldn't hold on any longer, held his hand, and fell into a deep sleep.
Gu Xiao didn't feel sleepy at all.
He held Nan Zhiyi's hand, but his ears were perked up, listening to the little thing behind him at all times.
Sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, falling on the two sleeping figures, one large and one small. Peace and tranquility prevailed.
Nan Zhiyi slept very soundly. When she opened her eyes again, it was already dark outside the window, and only a dim yellow wall lamp was lit in the ward.
She moved around and found that her whole body ached, but she felt a sense of relief, as if a heavy burden had been lifted.
Gu Xiao, who was standing guard nearby, noticed and leaned over: "You're awake? Aunt Wu came twice and brought food, which has been kept warm. Would you like something to eat?"
Nan Zhiyi nodded and tried to sit up slowly on her own.
Gu Xiao reached out to help her, but she gently pushed him away: "I can do it myself."
She got out of bed and slowly made her way to the bathroom.
Gu Xiao's gaze remained fixed on her until she returned safely.
When she came out, Gu Xiao had already tidied up the bed and put on clean maternity pads.
Nan Zhiyi's face flushed slightly, and she casually asked, "Wu Ma came twice? I didn't hear a thing."
"Yes, I delivered meals twice."
Gu Xiao's thermos contained a light fish soup.
He scooped up a spoonful and held it to her lips. "The nurse said you were just too tired and fell into a deep sleep, which is a good thing."
Nan Zhiyi drank the fish soup, and her stomach felt warm and cozy.
Looking at Gu Xiao's focused expression, she asked softly, "Are you... worried? Thinking that I..."
Gu Xiao brought another spoonful of soup to her lips, stopping her from saying anything more: "Don't talk nonsense. You're fine, you're just sleeping soundly."
Nan Zhiyi obediently drank it, smiled, and stopped teasing him.
After eating, Nan Zhiyi felt a slight swelling and pain in her chest. She was unsure: "It feels a little swollen here, should I breastfeed?"
"Should we try waiting until he wakes up?"
The two of them turned their gaze to the swaddled baby under the light, watching his peaceful sleeping face.
We need to give him a name.
“Come and get it.” Gu Xiao said without hesitation.
Nan Zhiyi shook her head: "I don't know what to name it, I haven't thought about it yet."
"Let's just pick a nickname for now," Gu Xiao said casually, looking at the child. "Born in May, and with the number five in the birth time, let's call him Xiao Wu."
Nan Zhiyi was stunned: "...So casual? You're also the fifth in your family."
Gu Xiao also sensed something was amiss: "What should it be called?"
The two of them stared at the sleeping little face and fell into deep thought. After looking at that wrinkled little face for a while, they found it quite cute and pleasing to the eye.
After watching for a while, Nan Zhiyi felt sticky all over: "The weather is warm, I want to wash myself with warm water, just be careful not to catch a cold."
Gu Xiao was still worried, so he went to the nurses' station to check. After receiving a positive reply, he returned to the ward, carefully adjusted the warm water, wrung out a towel until it was half-dry, and handed it to Nan Zhiyi. He then stood guard outside the bathroom door.
After washing up and changing into clean clothes, Nan Zhiyi felt much refreshed.
Nan Zhiyi scratched her ear, "He has a really loud voice."
Gu Xiao checked the diaper; it was dry. "Is he hungry? Then, should we try breastfeeding?"
Nan Zhiyi nervously took the child and tried to breastfeed.
The little one instinctively leaned in and sucked hard for a long time, but became even angrier, crying until his little face turned red, feeling extremely wronged.
Why isn't he eating?
Gu Xiao was also sweating profusely and at a loss when the on-duty nurse heard the noise and rushed over.
He saw his savior and quickly explained the situation.
Nurse: "Don't worry, it's probably because the milk flow isn't fully open yet. The baby is weak and has difficulty sucking. Mother, let the baby suckle more to stimulate the flow, or the father can help to open the milk flow."
After the nurse finished speaking, she went to attend to other matters.
The two new parents were left looking at each other in bewilderment, and Nan Zhiyi's cheeks flushed red.
"I'll let him try again..." She quickly lowered her head and hugged the child into her arms.
She didn't want Gu Xiao's help.
Gu Xiao coughed lightly, turned around and went to the bathroom to wash his hands carefully. He then brought a clean, soft towel back to the bedside and wiped the fine sweat from Nan Zhiyi's forehead.
Under the dim light, Nan Zhiyi lowered her head slightly, her expression focused and gentle, holding the little person in her arms and softly coaxing them.
She was enveloped in a soft halo, radiating a calm yet powerful maternal glow.
This scene moved him more than any magnificent sight he had ever seen, and filled his chest with a surging, burning emotion.
...
The process was bumpy, and the new parents were quite embarrassed, but in the end, the little one finally managed to nurse and fell asleep again contentedly.
Gu Xiao gently placed the child back on the cot, returned to Nan Zhiyi's bedside, and embraced her along with the blanket: "Zhiyi, you are truly great. You have become a mother, and I, thanks to you, have become your partner, and now I have become his father."
A sense of pride welled up inside Nan Zhiyi, and she honestly said, "I also think I'm pretty amazing."
But then, memories of childbirth resurfaced, "But...giving birth was really terrifying."
Gu Xiao tightened his arms, pulling her closer into his embrace, as if that would dispel her fear.
He was silent for a moment before saying in a hoarse voice, "I was outside when I heard your voice, and I was more scared than if I had been shot myself... Zhiyi, I can't lose you."
Nan Zhiyi nodded vigorously in his arms, her eyes welling up with tears: "Yes, I can't live without you either."
“The child was an accident,” Gu Xiao promised with utmost solemnity. “I never imagined you would suffer like this. This one child is enough. Too many children make a mother suffer, and I will never let you suffer again.”
"I trust you."
Nan Zhiyi found a more comfortable position in his arms.
The two embraced quietly until she couldn't help but yawn: "Bring him over to sleep, you go sleep in that bed."
Gu Xiao shook his head, carefully laid her down, and covered her with the blanket: "You sleep well, I'll stay with you two. That bed is too narrow, I can't sleep there."
The child woke up crying again during the night.
Gu Xiao immediately got up, made some formula, and carefully fed him.
He looked at Nan Zhiyi's sleeping profile, then lowered his head and tapped his little nose: "Be quiet, drink your milk powder, don't wake Mommy."
