Chapter 99: Discussing Building a Kang

"Don't talk about noodle dumpling soup anymore!" Zhong Mingwei was about to speak when Ah Chou interrupted him and said fiercely, "I've been eating noodle dumpling soup for three days in a row! If you say you want to eat noodle dumpling soup again, I will... I will beat you up!"

Zhong Mingwei rubbed his nose awkwardly and pitifully discussed with Ah Chou: "Then can you hit me more gently? I'm afraid of the pain."

Ah Chou's lips twitched: "..."

All right. Let's have another bowl of noodle dumpling soup.

August 1, the 32nd year of Jiasheng

Ningguta.

After having breakfast with Zhong Mingwei, Achou took the finished embroidery pieces down the mountain to find Grandma Chen.

When we arrived at Jixian Bookstore, Ah Chou found that this year's Jixian Bookstore was very lively. There were a lot of people coming in and out. Ah Chou looked at the middle-aged men coming in and out and was very puzzled. Are they going to renovate the house here? Why are these men holding shovels or pickaxes in their hands?

"Girl, you're here?" Chen Qingxuan saw Ah Chou coming in and greeted her with a smile.

"Yes. I came to look for grandma." Ah Chou was busy shaking the small bundle in his hand and explained to Chen Qingxuan, "Mr. Chen, I have finished embroidering the pieces. I came to give them to grandma. Why is grandma not here?"

"It's not convenient to live here because we are building a house here. I'll let grandma go back to the village first," Chen Qingxuan nodded. He said to Ah Chou, looking at the bundle in Ah Chou's hand, "Why don't you give me the embroidery piece. I'll give it to grandma myself."

"Okay, thank you, Mr. Chen," Ah Chou thanked him, and while looking at the men coming in and out, he paused and asked Chen Qingxuan, "Mr. Chen, I see that your house is in good condition, why do you need to repair it?"

Chen Qingxuan smiled and said, "It's not a big problem. It's just that there's a crack in the kang at home. Let's fix it quickly before the weather gets cold."

"Are they repairing kangs?" Ah Chou's eyes lit up immediately. "Mr. Chen, I'm just looking for someone to build a kang. Can you tell them to build one for me after your kang is repaired?"

"What's wrong with that?" Chen Qingxuan nodded, and called a middle-aged man over. "Uncle Chen, my neighbor here wants to build a kang. Do you think it would be convenient for you to go and build one for them?"

The middle-aged man put the shovel aside, rubbed the mud on his hands, looked at Ah Chou, and asked Chen Qingxuan: "Is this the girl's home? How far is it? Are you in a hurry?"

"Not far, not far. It's on the mountainside. It's only two miles from here," Ah Chou pointed at the mountainside and said to the middle-aged man, "Don't worry. You can finish Mr. Chen's house first and then come to our house to build the kang."

The middle-aged man nodded: "Okay, then the day after tomorrow, I'll bring people over."

"Then Uncle Chen, we have a deal. I'll wait for you at home the day after tomorrow," Ah Chou nodded and agreed, while saying to Chen Qingxuan, "Thank you, Mr. Chen. I'll leave now."

"Okay, let's go." Chen Qingxuan said.

"Mr. Chen, um..." Ah Chou just turned around and stopped again. She glanced at Chen Qingxuan's study, looking as if she wanted to say something but hesitated.

"What's wrong? Is there anything else?" Chen Qingxuan looked at her dark eyes and couldn't help but curl his lips.

Somehow, he felt that the girl had become prettier. She always looked unkempt before, but today her hair was neatly combed into a ponytail. The dark red scar on her neck was clearly visible, but the scar did not look so ugly, especially when the girl was looking at him with her clear, deer-like eyes.

"No, nothing, Mr. Chen, I'm leaving!" Ah Chou shook his head and hurriedly turned around and walked down the stairs.

"This girl!" Chen Qingxuan smiled and shook his head, and called Uncle Chen, "Uncle Chen, how much silver does it cost to build a kang?"

"At least one tael," Uncle Chen looked at Ah Chou's figure walking away and smiled at Chen Qingxuan, "If you weren't your neighbor, it would have been at least one tael and five cents. I only charged you so little just for your sake."
