Chapter 89 The Grand Tutor's Style
Three days after Xiao Yan recognized his ancestors and moved into Chengguang Palace, Fu Mingyi still hadn't given her any explanation. But on this day, he seemed to finally remember her. He came to pay his respects early in the morning and even asked her about serious matters.
Little Xiao is so playful. After breakfast, she ran off to play and also kidnapped Yao Yao. She should be in the small garden right now.
Xiao Lan seems to have recently discovered that sleeping snuggled up to Xiao Qing is more comfortable than sleeping in her own little nest, so she's currently clinging to her and refusing to leave.
Xiao Qing then held Xiao Lan and looked at Fu Mingyi, listening to him ask about Mei Shu.
The Grand Tutor's voice was actually very pleasant to listen to; his steady and calm tone possessed a magnetic quality that, while not exaggerated, was captivating. It wasn't too low, nor too high; it wasn't too slow, nor too urgent.
Everything was just right, as if it were born this way.
Like him, he seems to possess a deceptive quality.
"It's up to the Grand Tutor to decide." Xiao Qing was somewhat absent-minded, his fingers touching Xiao Lan's ear, his eyes slightly unfocused.
She couldn't quite understand what Fu Mingyi was trying to do.
Fu Mingyi picked up the teacup on the table and casually dipped it in the rim. After a long while, he slowly said, "In that case, let's meet."
He looked at Xiao Qing and asked, "Does Your Majesty think it is better to meet in Chengde Palace or in the palace prison?"
"What does the Grand Tutor think is the best place?" Xiao Qing couldn't help but pass the buck back to him.
Fu Mingyi wasn't annoyed; he simply nodded slightly, his upright posture appearing even more striking.
"If Your Majesty takes pity on this servant, it would be best to meet her in Chengde Palace. Otherwise, it would be fair to do so in the palace prison."
Seeing him give advice so calmly and seemingly fairly, Xiao Qing seemed to see again the image of him holding Xiao Yan's hand and walking out of that sunlight.
She lowered her head, looking at the shadow on the back of her hand, and after a long while said, "Whether I pity her or not is not important. She is the Grand Tutor's person, so let the Grand Tutor deal with her as he sees fit."
Fu Mingyi put down his teacup and surprisingly smiled slightly.
"It is my fault that I have put Your Majesty in such a difficult position." He paused. "If I were to ask Your Majesty to condescend to move your residence, would Your Majesty consider this presumptuous of me?"
Xiao Qing thought to herself, what's a little condescension? Even if the Grand Tutor told her to get out of the palace right now, she wouldn't be surprised. How could this be considered "overstepping her bounds"?
Was the Grand Tutor implying that she should step down?
Why make something so simple so obscure and complicated?
She had said long ago that even if the Grand Tutor wanted the world, she was willing to hand it over.
As long as she leaves safely.
Despite their thoughts, they eventually went to the side hall where Mei Shu was imprisoned.
While waiting for this opportunity, Ma Hong consulted with Xiao Qing and then went to retrieve Mei Shu's confession and all the evidence.
After so many days, Mei Shu finally saw someone other than the guards at the gate, and was initially relieved. However, when she saw that in addition to the young emperor, the Grand Tutor was also among the visitors, her expression immediately stiffened.
The Grand Tutor had a handsome face, a gentle and approachable demeanor, and was highly praised by the court and the public. However, Mei Shu always felt that his eyes were too deep, too unfathomable, and too sharp.
She glanced at it once and unconsciously lowered her head, her knees buckled, and she knelt down.
Xiao Qing raised an eyebrow slightly, thinking to herself that the Grand Tutor's authority was indeed the most effective.
The Grand Tutor ushered Xiao Qing to the main seat, while he himself sat on the left side below. Beside him were a confession, a small piece of paper, a packet of "Po Suo Yin" (a type of herbal medicine), and a small box of incense powder, among other things.
Fu Mingyi glanced at it casually, then looked at Xiao Qing and said, "I also have a few things to present to Your Majesty."
He said this, but sat there quietly and did nothing more.
Xiao Qing understood and said to Ma Hong beside him, "Ma Hong, you stay outside and keep watch. No one is allowed to approach us until the Grand Tutor and I go out."
Ma Hong bowed his head in response. As he walked out, he unconsciously glanced at Fu Mingyi, only to find that Fu Mingyi was also looking at him. His heart skipped a beat.
"Do we still need Attendant Ma?" The Grand Tutor casually changed the subject.
Xiao Qing nodded, "The people arranged by the Grand Tutor are all quite good."
Fu Mingyi then slightly twitched the corners of his mouth and looked at Mei Shu, who was kneeling on the ground and unable to straighten up.
"Mei Shu," he said calmly, "I remember when I brought you out, you already expressed your feelings. Do you still remember that now?"
Mei Shu lay prostrate on the ground, feeling as if the only things left in the world were the Grand Tutor's voice and her own heartbeat.
Do you still remember? Do you still remember?
“This servant… remembers.”
Xiao Qing knew that there must have been an agreement between them.
Yes, it's not just Mei Shu, but also Ma Hong, Liu Yi, and Dan Ying. Who among them wasn't someone the Grand Tutor found for her? Who among them wouldn't have an agreement with him?
Even Mingxiu was brought into the palace by the Grand Tutor because of Physician He.
Fu Mingyi nodded. "Good that you remember. I don't need to read this confession. Just say whatever you want in front of His Majesty."
After saying that, he picked up the confession, slowly and elegantly tore it into strips, and casually threw it next to Mei Shu.
The sound of the paper being torn was like a sharp knife slowly slicing through her skin; she didn't dare look at the fragments.
Xiao Qing could clearly see that her shoulders were trembling, and he couldn't help but sigh in his heart.
The Grand Tutor's actions were truly unexpected.
The Grand Tutor's face was ashen, and he remained silent.
Mei Shu could only hold on for a moment before speaking in a trembling voice.
Xiao Qing listened carefully, and what she said was roughly the same as the confession she had written.
But the Grand Tutor remained seated quietly, without making the slightest comment.
Mei Shu also trembled and lay prostrate on the ground, not daring to utter another word.
"Raise your head and think about it. I didn't hear you clearly just now."
When Mei Shu raised her face, it was almost bloodless.
She was still trembling, but finally mustered her courage and asked, "What would you like to hear, sir?"
Fu Mingyi was truly despicable, yet he calmly said, "I already said it, it was just a casual remark, didn't you hear me clearly?"
Mei Shu kowtowed, "Although I helped that female physician to pass on the message, I never had any intention of harming Your Majesty. I really don't know about 'Po Suo Yin' and have never used it on Your Majesty."
Fu Mingyi remained silent for a moment, then a smile suddenly spread across his otherwise solemn face.
“Mei Shu, you have been in Nanhua Palace for almost ten years. You have also suffered in the palace prison for two years. I wonder if you have damaged your ears. Since they are no longer useful, it is better to get rid of them.”
Mei Shu looked up in surprise, "Grand Tutor, please forgive me."
Fu Mingyi bowed to Xiao Qing and said, "Your Majesty, please forgive me."
Mei Shu quickly turned to Xiao Qing and kowtowed repeatedly, "Your Majesty, please forgive me, Your Majesty, please forgive me."
“A person’s opportunities are limited. His Majesty is benevolent and has given you three chances. I will also give you three chances. You have already used one, so you have two left.”
Fu Mingyi's lips tightened. "I really don't like being asked question by question."
