Chapter 115

After lunch, Bai Ruoyun had a seafood feast prepared by Bai Ruozhen. She felt that the fish and dried shrimp she'd eaten before no longer truly counted as seafood. It was a shame they were going back to the provincial capital the next night; otherwise, she wouldn't have wanted to go back. It would have been better for her to stay here and eat seafood every meal.

Not only her, but even Bai Liqiang and Li Qiulan feasted on the food. Bai Lishan, however, couldn't eat too many small crabs due to health reasons, but he ate quite a few large prawns. Gu Changqing even said, "I'll bring you some large sea rice when I leave tomorrow. It'll be great for making soup when you get home."

Bai Lishan was very happy when he heard this, but unfortunately Bai Ruoyun felt that no matter how delicious it was, it was not as delicious as fresh seafood.

In the evening, Qiu Lanying left work early and went home to prepare the food. She planned to invite Li Qiulan and her son to have dinner together at home. Li Qiulan wanted to refuse, but then she thought that they had never sat down and talked properly as in-laws, and she didn't know when they would meet again, so she agreed.

Bai Ruozhen and Gu Changqing went back to help. Li Qiulan took the children to the beach again that afternoon. Seeing farmers harvesting wheat everywhere, Li Qiulan sighed, "I didn't expect life in the countryside to be so hard. Liqiang, if it weren't for you, your second sister wouldn't have had to go to the countryside."

Bai Liqiang agreed with this and nodded immediately, "Don't worry, Mom. I will definitely work hard in the future and buy good things for my second sister when the time comes."

Li Qiulan laughed, "It's important to quickly find a wife."

But Bai Liqiang was shy and ignored her and walked forward.

When Bai Ruozhen and Gu Changqing returned, Li Qiulan was cleaning a sea fish. It was quite large, but it looked very strange. Bai Ruozhen asked, "Mom, what kind of fish is this?"

Qiu Lanying poured out the dirty water and said, "This is called Laoban fish. Let's steam it and eat it tonight. It's fresh out of the sea."

Bai Ruozhen also smiled, "Then my brothers and sisters are in for a treat. Ruoyun ate so much at lunch that she said she didn't want to leave."

"That's the good thing about us. If we can't afford pork, we eat seafood. Even though we have to hand it in, the leftovers are enough for us to eat." Qiu Lanying pointed to a bag in the corner. "There are some swimming crabs over there. We'll make spicy food tonight. There are also some clams. We'll wash them and cook them tonight."

"Then it's another seafood feast." Bai Ruozhen smiled, and then said sincerely, "Thank you, Mom."

Qiu Lanying smiled and said, "It's nice for a family to be polite. Besides, we didn't even treat my mother-in-law well when she came. She's leaving tomorrow, so we have to have a meal together no matter what."

Bai Ruozhen grinned as she helped. Gu Changqing took the basin from her and said, "Go pick the vegetables. Be careful not to get your hands caught by the crabs."

"Yeah." Bai Ruozhen was also quite scared and went to the backyard to pick vegetables.

In the evening, Gu Changqing went to the educated youth center to pick up the mother and her four children. At this time, Gu Zhiguo also came back. Bai Ruozhen was the chef, and a table of dishes prepared by Qiu Lanying and Gu Changqing were also brought to the table.

Bai Ruoyun couldn't move her eyes away from the table full of seafood, not to mention the fragrant pig's trotters.

The more Qiu Lanying looked at Bai Ruoyun, the more she liked her. "If only I had another son, I would definitely marry Ruoyun."

Upon hearing this, Bai Ruozhen and Gu Changqing looked at each other and smiled.

Bai Ruoyun's eyes widened, and she said to Qiu Lanying, "Auntie, why didn't you have more children?"

Qiu Lanying was stunned for a moment and then laughed.

Li Qiulan was also at a loss for words. "Just eat your meal. Even eating won't stop your mouth."

Bai Ruoyun curled her lips and continued eating, while Bai Ruozhen smiled and said, "When we returned to the provincial capital before, Ruoyun asked Brother Changqing if he had a younger brother."

"There is such a thing?" Qiu Lanying found it more and more funny. This little girl was so cute. It was a pity that she had many sons but no younger ones.

The meal was lively. After the meal, Bai Ruozhen and Gu Changqing sent them back to the educated youth site. They also said that they would return to Yancheng early the next morning and then take the train back to the provincial capital in the afternoon.

On the way back, Gu Changqing took Bai Ruozhen's hand and said, "Shall we go for a walk by the river?"

Bai Ruozhen was a little tempted but was afraid of mosquitoes, "There are a lot of mosquitoes near the river..."

"Don't be afraid." Gu Changqing said as he took out a bottle of toilet water from the bag he was carrying. "This is specially made to repel mosquitoes. It's the latest product in the supermarket. I think it's pretty good."

Bai Ruozhen also perked up, "Okay, let's go."

The two walked hand in hand towards the river. When they reached the edge of the grove, Gu Changqing sprayed some toilet water around them and then walked in. Unexpectedly, the place downstream where they were going was already occupied. They could hear voices from afar, and when they looked carefully, it seemed that there were quite a few people there.

Gu Changqing immediately understood, and then pulled Bai Ruozhen upstream. Bai Ruozhen felt strange, "Is there anyone who is also dating? But why are there so many people?"

After walking a distance, Gu Changqing said, "They are not dating, but people from the village are taking a bath over there."

Bai Ruozhen widened her eyes, "Taking a bath? So many people taking a bath together? Why do I hear there are both men and women?" She simply couldn't believe it. Although it was late at night, it was so strange that so many people were taking a bath in the river together.

"It's not surprising," Gu Changqing explained. "Wheat harvest started today and everyone is exhausted after a day of work. But many families don't have wells, so if they want to bathe, they have to go to the well in the center of the village or fetch water from people with wells. It's very tiring and no one wants to fetch water, so they just go to the river to bathe. That's why many people go to bathe in the river every summer. This has been going on for a long time and it's not surprising. Also, don't let it sound like men and women are together; they may actually be far away."

Bai Ruozhen nodded in sudden realization, "So this is how it works." It's no wonder she didn't know. There was a well in their educated youth camp, and the educated youth claimed that they were city people and didn't want to bathe in the river with the village women, so they usually took a bath in the temporary bathhouse in the yard.
