Chapter 17

Bai Ruozhen looked at Zhu Guixia in surprise, then asked in surprise, "Really?"

"Of course." Zhu Guixia patted her chest and said proudly, "The Chairman taught us to be united and friendly. You are the youngest among us, so we should take good care of you. I am a few years older than you, so from now on you can call me Sister Xia."

Bai Ruozhen nodded repeatedly, then stood up and bowed, "Sister Xia."

That’s great! I’ll have someone to lean on now. I’m so happy.

Hehe.

Zhu Guixia said a little embarrassedly, "Don't be so polite, you will be my sister from now on, come to me if you have any difficulties."

Bai Ruozhen nodded repeatedly again and again.

Feng Qiujuan, who was standing by, saw their relationship quickly warming up, and even recognized each other as sisters. She looked at them with envy and said to Bai Ruozhen, "You can find me too."

"Yeah, Sister Xiaoqiu." Bai Ruozhen called sweetly.

Feng Qiujuan chuckled and patted her head, "Sister Zhenzhen."

"From now on, the three of us will be good sisters." Zhu Guixia said with a smile.

"Humph, you're already forming cliques before we even get to the place."

The three of them were laughing when Zhao Lai Di opposite them suddenly said this.

Zhu Guixia put away her smile and said angrily, "Say it again if you dare."

Zhao Lai Di looked up at Zhu Guixia and said, "I didn't say anything." She glanced at the sweet potatoes in Zhu Guixia's lunch box and snorted, "You're trying to curry favor with her just to get something delicious."

"You!" Zhu Guixia looked at her sweet potatoes and said angrily, "Do you think everyone agrees with you? You clearly have sweet potatoes but you claim you don't have any and you even try to cheat people out of their white flour bread. I ate the sweet potatoes, but I was happy to eat them because they were saved by my parents for me. I wouldn't despise them, unlike some people who think the sweet potatoes their parents saved are bad. People like you are really disgusting."

Bai Ruozhen looked at Zhu Guixia with admiration and wanted to applaud her. What she said was really great. She liked a sister like that.

Zhao Lai Di hadn't expected Zhu Guixia to be so unreasonable. Her eyes instantly turned red. However, because of what had just happened, none of the other educated youth were willing to help her. Instead, the little girl who had initially planned to share her food glanced at the three people across from her and whispered to Zhao Lai Di, "Laidi, just keep your mouth shut. You're all assigned to the same place. If you offend them, what will they do if they ostracize you in the future?"

It would have been fine if she hadn't said this, but once she said it, Zhao Lai Di felt even more aggrieved. So what if her family was poor? So what if she just couldn't bear to eat those sweet potatoes? They had so many delicious foods, why were they so stingy and couldn't share some with her? She saw clearly that Bai Ruozhen couldn't even get a single pancake. Why couldn't they care about the educated youth who went with them? Now they were united to exclude her. Why?

Zhao Lai Di didn't say anything, and the little girl stopped trying to persuade her. She took her lunch box and started eating, and didn't mention sharing it with Zhao Lai Di.

The three people opposite looked at each other and saw smiles in each other's eyes. Zhao Lai Di saw that the other party did not share her food, and she also hated the little girl in her heart. She didn't eat the meal, put the bag on her legs and started crying.

Her crying was so obvious. Although they were all in the same carriage, none of the other educated youth came to comfort her.

However, an older woman sitting in the back couldn't stand it anymore and came over to Zhao Lai Di and said, "Little comrade, even if you're crying, please keep your voice down. We're in the same compartment together, it would be bad to disturb others."

"I'm happy to." Zhao Lai Di raised her head and roared, then lay down and cried again, her voice a little louder.

The older sister laughed out loud, then thought the girl was unreasonable and returned to her seat with a sullen face.

Bai Ruozhen looked at Zhao Lai Di and suddenly said weakly, "Sister Lai Di, are you crying because you don't want to go to the countryside?"

When Zhao Lai Di heard this, she looked up at Bai Ruozhen and actually forgot to cry.

"It seems I was right, Sister Lai Di," Bai Ruozhen looked at her seriously and said, "But this kind of thinking is wrong..."

Before she could finish her words, Zhao Lai Di angrily said, "I can think whatever I want, what's it to you?"

As soon as she finished speaking, silence fell in the carriage. Zhu Guixia then stood up and said to Zhao Lai Di, "You want to fight, don't you? You just think Zhenzhen is young and easy to bully. People like you should be exiled to a remote village and reformed. Then you will learn what working-class unity is."

"Why are you saying that to me?" Zhao Lai Di stopped crying and pointed at Zhu Guixia with red eyes. "How did I bully her? You guys formed cliques and didn't let me speak out. She laughed at me, so why can't I speak out?"

Seeing the two of them arguing, Bai Ruozhen quickly stood up and looked at Zhao Lai Di and said, "Sister Lai Di, I just made a guess and you got so excited. Could it be that I'm right and you just don't want to go to the countryside?"

Zhao Lai Di was stunned and said in panic, "What do you know?"

"I don't know, but I've always insisted on going to the countryside to receive re-education from the poor and lower-middle peasants, and transforming myself into a more useful person to society. And Sister Lai Di actually has such ideas, and how dare she accuse us of forming cliques?"

Zhao Lai Di was stunned by what she said and blurted out, "You guys are just forming a gang and you should be paraded through the streets."

"Alas," Bai Ruozhen shook his head in disappointment. "We're not forming cliques. Chairman M said we should unite with everyone we can. That way, we can reduce our enemies to a minimum, leaving only imperialism and a small number of pro-imperialist elements in our country, namely, the big capitalists and landlords with close ties to imperialism. For us, the more friends the better, the fewer enemies the better. But Sister Lai Di, we are united, and it's you who refuses to unite with us. Do you want to be the one who makes mistakes?"
