Seven or eight days passed after they finally finished planting the corn, and it rained, which was undoubtedly good news for those of them who depended on the weather for their livelihood.
After planting the corn that afternoon, Gu Changqing and Bai Ruozhen went to see Li Xianjin to get a letter of introduction. After getting the letter, they went back to pack their bags. Gu Changqing had already bought a train ticket for the next night; they would be able to reach the provincial capital overnight.
After leaving Li Xianjin's house, Gu Changqing walked her back to the educated youth unit. "Go back and get some rest. Come to my house for dinner tomorrow morning. We'll go to Yancheng together and catch the train."
"Yeah." Bai Ruozhen nodded. In fact, she was quite excited. After being away for half a year, she could finally go home, and she brought her boyfriend with her. She didn't call in advance, and she didn't know if it would scare her parents.
After returning to the educated youth point, Li Aihong was also packing her luggage. Her wedding was scheduled for five days later, but unfortunately Bai Ruozhen was not there and could not attend.
Bai Ruozhen rummaged through his kang cabinet and took out two rolls of toilet paper, handing them to Li Aihong. "Sister Aihong, these are for you."
Li Aihong glanced at the snow-white toilet paper and asked in surprise, "Did you buy this?"
Bai Ruozhen blushed slightly. "Yes, Gu Changqing's fourth sister and I bought it in Yancheng. I don't have anything else to give you, so I'll give it to you. I have more here."
"No, that won't work. This thing is hard to buy. Keep it for yourself." Li Aihong refused.
"Sister Aihong, just take it. I had agreed to attend your wedding, but now I can't. This is a little gift from me, so you must take it." Bai Ruozhen stuffed the things into her kang cabinet and went back to her bunk.
"I'm going to sleep. I'll get up early and go out tomorrow." Bai Ruozhen covered himself with the quilt and glanced at Li Aihong.
Li Aihong's eyes were slightly red, and she said, "Thank you."
Bai Ruozhen smiled and thought that Sister Aihong would be the most beautiful bride.
Bai Ruozhen woke up at dawn after a dreamless night. Gu Changqing was waiting for her at the door and asked, "Have you packed your things?"
Bai Ruozhen looked at his deflated luggage bag and said, "I brought the ginseng you gave me. My little brother is not feeling well, and I want to go back and treat him."
"What else do you need?" This was the first time Gu Changqing heard her say that his younger brother wasn't feeling well. "I have some astragalus and wolfberry at home. Would you like to take some?"
Bai Ruozhen was surprised. "Really? That's great. Just a little bit will do. Thank you, Brother Changqing."
"What are you thanking me for? We're just friends." Gu Changqing looked at her lovingly.
Bai Ruozhen was a little shy and lowered his head slightly.
Gu Changqing took her bag, and the two of them went to Gu's house. Gu Changqing put his things down and went to look for wolfberries and astragalus. Qiu Lanying asked him, "What are you looking for?"
"I remember I brought back some wolfberries and astragalus," said Gu Changqing.
Qiu Lanying said, "It's in the cupboard. I gave some to your grandma and there are still some left. Why are you taking these?"
Bai Ruozhen said hurriedly, "My little brother has been in poor health since birth. I want to go back and get some treatment."
"Yeah, that's something you need to nourish yourself with. Wait, I'll get it for you." Qiu Lanying put down the things in her hands and took them out. Then she took out some ginseng, deer antlers and other things from the kang hole. "We didn't put much of these here before. Since your little brother is not in good health, take more. Otherwise, it will be late next time when you go back."
Bai Ruozhen was so moved when she saw Qiu Lanying busy working, "Thank you, Auntie."
Qiu Lanying couldn't stand her little appearance the most, so she quickly came over and hugged her, "Good girl, go eat. After dinner, let your uncle take you to town."
After the two finished their meal, Gu Zhiguo borrowed a mule cart to put all the bags he had packed on it. Bai Ruozhen was shocked, "Why are there so many things?" Then he looked at his own small bag and felt so ashamed.
"Go up." Gu Changqing interrupted her, "These things are not much. I'm going to propose marriage, how can I bring less things?"
Bai Ruozhen said "oh" and climbed onto the mule cart and sat down.
It was only around ten o'clock when we arrived in Yancheng, but the train didn't leave until after four in the afternoon. Gu Changqing said, "Why don't we go to Fourth Sister's place?"
There was naturally nothing wrong with Bai Ruozhen, so he went to Gu Changlan's place. Gu Changlan was not there, but fortunately Gu Changqing had the key. The two of them went in and rested for a while, and then something awkward happened.
Bai Ruozhen was a little nervous being alone like this. She said, "Brother Changqing, I want to go to Sister Changlan to buy some cloth to bring back. I still have cloth coupons."
Gu Changqing glanced at the time and said, "Okay, let's go have lunch together after we finish shopping." Suddenly, he remembered something and dug out a box from his bag and handed it to Bai Ruozhen, "As agreed, I'll give you the watch when I get to your house."
"Ah." Bai Ruozhen had forgotten about this.
Gu Changqing took out his watch after seeing her helpless expression and said, "Put your hand over here."
Bai Ruozhen obediently reached out, and then Gu Changqing carefully put it on her. Looking at Bai Ruozhen's fingers, Gu Changqing suddenly lifted them up and kissed them.
Bai Ruozhen blushed, "Brother Changqing."
"Yeah." Gu Changqing smiled and said, "Let's go."
The two of them went out to the department store in front. Gu Changlan saw them and waved, "Are you going to the provincial capital today?"
Gu Changqing nodded, "Yes, Zhenzhen wants to buy some fabric to bring back to her family."
Gu Changlan pulled out a piece of navy blue cloth from under the counter. "It has a small flaw. Do you want it? No ticket required."
"Yes." Bai Ruozhen nodded quickly. What's the big deal if there are some minor flaws? Their family is poor so it's okay even if it's a little worse.
Gu Changlan issued a ticket. Gu Changqing wanted to take the money, but was stopped by Bai Ruozhen, "I'll pay for it myself. I want to buy it for them."
"That's fine." Gu Changqing didn't refuse. He watched her pay the money and then took the fabric in her hand. "Would you like to buy anything else?"
