Extra 2 (Gu Changlan vs. Hu Qiuyang)

When Gu Changlan turned 20, she met Hu Qiuyang. He treated her well, but she still didn't want to get married. Sometimes she couldn't figure out what she was thinking, but she simply felt marriage was troublesome. Just look at her mother. She started having children the moment she got married, and over a decade, she gave birth to six children.

More than ten years! How many decades does a woman’s youth have? Ten years are enough for a beautiful girl to waste her time and become a middle-aged woman who has to take care of a baby with her right hand.

Gu Changlan was terrified at the thought of life after marriage, so she would rather be urged by her family and ridiculed by her friends, she still didn't want to get married.

Meeting Hu Qiuyang was an accident. She still remembered that it was a sunny day. She got a letter of introduction and went to Penglai for a trip alone. When she was going down the mountain, she encountered heavy rain. When she was hiding from the rain, she met Hu Qiuyang who was also hiding from the rain.

Gu Changlan knew that she was good-looking, and she was even prepared to fight to the death with the other person. Fortunately, the other person was a gentleman and not only did he not do anything bad, he also escorted her all the way home when they went down the mountain.

Later, the two got to know each other better, and she knew that Hu Qiuyang liked her.

But Gu Changlan also understood that she didn't want to get married. In this era, women who didn't get married when they reached a certain age would be ridiculed. Fortunately, her mother never forced her.

Hu Qiuyang's arrival made her uneasy and even wanted to escape. She was afraid that one day she would fall in love with him and give up her freedom for her.

Later, her fifth brother got married and lived happily.

Hu Qiuyang asked her, "Looking at your brother and his family's happiness, aren't you envious?"

Gu Changlan was certainly envious, but what would happen after that? If she got married, she was afraid of getting pregnant and having children, then being a slave to daily chores and worrying about food and clothing. It would be better to be someone who could feed the whole family.

Hu Qiuyang's family is from the county town, and his family has been urging him to get married and have children. Gu Changlan knew all this, but she felt uncomfortable when she really had to harden her heart to persuade him.

This entanglement continued until 1977, when my fifth brother, his wife, and my younger sister all got into university and left Yancheng for Beijing.

Hu Qiuyang said, "Do you want to leave Yancheng?"

Gu Changlan looked at him and shook her head, "No." At least she wouldn't leave now.

Two days later, one afternoon, a colleague called her, "Changlan, there's an old lady outside looking for you."

Gu Changlan thought it was her mother, but it turned out to be a strange woman in her fifties. Gu Changlan frowned and stepped forward, "Auntie, you..."

Before he could finish his words, he was slapped in the face.

The woman opposite her gnashed her teeth, her eyes piercing her as she stared at her, "Leave my son, or I'll make your whole family restless."

Gu Changlan covered her face and looked at the woman, as if she saw the shadow of Hu Qiuyang on the woman's face. Haha, Gu Changlan instantly understood the identity of this woman. This was Hu Qiuyang's mother.

Mrs. Hu was still not satisfied after the slap, so she reached out to hit her again. However, there was no way Gu Changlan would let her hit her a second time. She reached out and grabbed the woman's arm, "Auntie, I don't mind the slap just now, but don't even think about hitting me again."

Old Mrs. Hu cursed her like crazy, "Shameless little whore, if you hadn't seduced my son, he would have married and had children long ago."

Gu Changlan understood that a mother was worried about her child, but she could not forgive her for not being able to control her son and causing trouble for her.

Gu Changlan shook off her arm and smiled softly, "I tied your son up? I begged your son? First of all, I never said I wanted to marry him, nor did I tie him up to stop him from getting married and having children." She moved closer to Mrs. Hu and smiled softly, "If he wants to, it's none of my business."

Old Mrs. Hu was stunned, but Gu Changlan walked away.

Old Mrs. Hu chased after her while cursing and trying to hit her.

Suddenly, Hu Qiuyang ran over from a distance and saw his mother chasing and beating Gu Changlan. He had only one thought in his mind: It's over.

Gu Changlan turned her head, revealing the slap mark on her face. She sneered and said, "Hu Qiuyang, don't come to me again in the future." After that, Gu Changlan left without staying.

After returning home, Gu Changlan's colleagues saw her like this and asked her to take a leave. Gu Changlan hurried back to the dormitory and sat on her small bed and cried bitterly.

Why, why do you blame her? She just doesn't want to get married. What did she do wrong?

Not long after, there was a knock on the door, and Hu Qiuyang's voice sounded tiredly outside, "Changlan, open the door."

Gu Changlan didn't want to pay attention to her and sat there motionless.

Hu Qiuyang knocked for a long time, but the door didn't open. He couldn't help but feel depressed. He leaned against the door and took out a cigarette and lit it. His face, which was always gentle and smiling, was now full of loneliness. "Changlan, why don't you want to get married?"

Gu Changlan didn't answer. What was she afraid of? She was afraid of having a child. She was afraid of caring for a child day and night, serving a large family. She was afraid of being treated like a slave and still being blamed.

She was afraid that one day she would become a haggard woman and be despised by others. She was afraid of too many things.

So she would rather live alone.

"Changlan." Hu Qiuyang leaned against the door, his voice full of helplessness, "I'm not saying my mother is wrong, she is indeed wrong, but can you open the door?"

Gu Changlan sat still, looking up at the door, "Go away, I won't get married."

Hu Qiuyang sighed, "If you don't open the door, I'll kick it down."

Gu Changlan frowned, stood up and opened the door after a while, "You..."

Before she could finish her words, she was blocked by Hu Qiuyang. Hu Qiuyang came in, closed the door, put his arms around Gu Changlan and kissed her.
