Chapter 4 Farewell in a Dream

Faced with the approaching horde of zombies, he struggled to swing his legs and arms, which were so badly beaten he could barely lift them, and even began to shout wildly in an attempt to scare them away.

However, zombies have no consciousness and are not afraid of these things. In the end, Liu Ye was powerless to fight back and was tackled to the ground.

"Aaaaaaaahhhhh!"

Even as his throat was bitten off, he still looked over desperately, reaching out one hand in an attempt to call for help.

Lin Xi watched all of this indifferently, and finally took off her hat and mask, slowly removed her sunglasses, revealing her dark eyes.

Liu Ye's pupils dilated suddenly, and even as he died, he stared at Lin Xi with disbelief.

Before he could finish the last syllable, Liu Ye breathed his last.

Looking at the fist-sized hole, Lin Xi felt completely unsafe, so she found a piece of wood and nailed it shut.

The zombies approached when they heard the commotion, but left after finding no sign of life.

There aren't many residents on the 20th floor to begin with, so most of the owners are probably queuing outside.

Lin Xi found it strange; how could they all have turned into zombies?

Perhaps some of them, like her, opened the door out of trust for their neighbors, only to be betrayed in the end...

At that moment, the television screen, which had been filled with static, suddenly displayed a series of scrolling subtitles: "Survivors, please close your doors and windows, and do not trust anyone! Do not trust anyone! Do not trust anyone!"

No one reports the news anymore; everyone is too busy taking care of themselves. But people are still actively posting updates on social media.

However, without human intervention, this situation won't last long. Power and internet outages are inevitable in the future.

A message suddenly popped up in the owners' group chat: 1803: Are there any survivors in our building?

Immediately afterwards, many homeowners started to chime in.

0804: Yes, but there are zombies everywhere outside, so I don't dare to move.

11:05: I just woke up, I jumped up suddenly, what happened?

2001: Besides me, there's another survivor on this floor. This girl is amazing! She picked up a heartless ingrate with her bare hands and threw him out!

2001: Little girl, are you learning weightlifting or shot put?

1105: Holy crap? What's going on?

2001: I advise everyone not to open the door easily, be careful not to be scammed.

1803: Indeed, a woman knocked on the door just now, I didn't open it, and she turned into a zombie a moment later.

1105: Holy crap! Real zombies! I thought this was a staged event!

0804: Good luck to you!

2001: Little sister, say something! Are you alright?

...

Lin Xi watched the constantly refreshing chat logs but didn't intend to pay attention. After all, she was a zombie; even if she needed to escape later, she couldn't very well run away with a bunch of living people, could she? What kind of image would that have?

My disguise, layered with so many layers, would easily arouse suspicion. If my identity were discovered, wouldn't that terrify them?

Besides, human nature is unpredictable; who knows if you'll encounter another Liu Ye?

Only an hour and a half has passed since she returned from the supermarket.

For some reason, she felt a little tired. How could she be tired when she had become a zombie? It was ridiculous.

Lin Xi closed all the doors and windows, drew the curtains, took a shower to wash away the bloodstains and bits of flesh from her body, changed into a cute set of pajamas, and fell asleep in bed.

Act as if nothing happened.

Before Lin Xi entered her dream, her eyes were filled with tears as she thought: If only nothing had really happened.

In her dream, she returned to when she was four years old. That was the first time she was sent to school. She was angry for a long time and pouted, refusing to leave.

My mother is young and beautiful, wearing a yellow floral dress that attracts the attention of passersby.

When Lin Xi saw the woman in front of her, tears welled up in her eyes and she couldn't hold them back. "Mom."

"Sweetie, Mommy is so sorry. Mommy wants to make it up to you. How about I take you to the amusement park?"

Kobayashi nodded, "Okay, I want to ride a small boat and a carousel!"

"Stop crying!" Mom wiped away her tears. "You're the strongest girl!"

In my dream, I spoke the same words as when I was four years old, and we walked the same paths and did the same things.

They bought sweet ice cream, and a large light blue one shaped like a cartoon rabbit with a thin white chocolate shard tucked behind its ear. She tore one off and gave it to her mother, then popped the other into her mouth, took a bite, and found it cloyingly sweet…

They were in a small boat at the water park, sliding down a large pipe. She clung tightly to her mother's waist, not daring to open her eyes.

As we rode the carousel, it was getting dark, and for a moment the roof was ablaze with colorful lights, causing the children to exclaim in surprise.

Xiaolin Xi held her mother's hand, her face full of confusion, "Why do we need the lights on in the rocking horse's house?"

"It's getting dark, baby." Mom suddenly turned around, squatted down, and looked at her gently.

wrong……

Lin Xi opened her mouth, her voice hoarse. She clearly remembered that her mother hadn't said that...

She laughed and said, "Because it's pretty! Sweetie."

Realizing something, Lin Xi's eyes involuntarily reddened, and she gripped her mother's fingers tightly with her little hands.

"Mom, please don't leave me, I'm scared..."

She was still smiling, so gently, so very gently...

Time seemed to stand still at this moment, and all the sounds of laughter and playfulness around them seemed to be blocked out by the wind.

“But the darkness isn’t scary at all,” she said, pointing to the carousel in front of her with a smile. “Look, there are beautiful lights, and the road ahead has become bright and wide again.”

Lin Xi shook her head, crying, and stubbornly held her hand. "I don't want to hear this. I don't want you to leave me! Let's go home together, okay?"

The mother pulled her hand away, touched her wrist, and said with heartache in her eyes, "Sweetie, does it hurt? It's a pity that Mommy can't be by your side anymore. Please forgive Mommy."

What does this mean? Why would someone say something like that?

Tears blurred her vision. Lin Xi tugged at her mother's clothes, repeating the same phrase over and over: "Come back with me!"

"Be brave, you're a grown-up now." The mother's expression was calm, she gently stroked her daughter's hair with a hint of reluctance, then looked down at the road beneath her feet. "You have to walk this road alone to find Dad and your brother, sweetie. You can do it, right?"

Lin Xi's tears welled up. She looked down the road, but the end was shrouded in mist, and she couldn't see anything clearly. Fear gripped her heart, and she unconsciously took a step back, feeling somewhat resistant.

When I turned around again, my mother was gone.

The amusement park became lively again, and the laughter of adults and children kept flooding her ears. She began to feel confused and scared, and cried her heart out.

She ran around everywhere, but couldn't find her mother anywhere.

[Ding! New task issued]
