Chapter 17: Land Reclamation

When Er Laizi saw Zhang the Butcher, he was so frightened that he took a few steps back. He grabbed the village chief's trouser legs and cried, "Grandpa Village Chief, I was really wrong. I will never steal anything again."

The village chief said: "Now you can steal other people's chickens, and in the future you can steal other people's food, other people's money, and even commit a crime. Do you want to be arrested by the officials and thrown into jail?"

The village chief sighed, "You are the only child in your family, and all your relatives have passed away. They just want you to live a good life, but you are still doing all kinds of sneaky things and not even cultivating the 20 acres of land at home. Are you trying to make sure your father can't rest in peace in the afterlife?"

Er Laizi was stunned by the series of scoldings from the village chief. It took him a long time to recover. "I don't want my father to be unable to rest in peace in the afterlife, and I don't want to be arrested. Grandpa Village Chief, I was really wrong. I am willing to take responsibility for my mistakes and turn over a new leaf. You can ask me to do anything for you."

The village chief glanced at Jiang Tuan Tuan, thought for a moment, and said, "Since you stole someone's chicken, compensate them with one, or give them a bag of food, and remember to pay back the money owed to Butcher Zhang."

Butcher Zhang waved his hand and said, "Brother Village Chief, you don't have to pay me back. As long as this little bastard can reform himself, I'll be satisfied."

Er Laizi raised his face, which was still stained with wet tears, and twisted his face. "My family is really broke. My pockets are cleaner than my face. I still have half a bag of food. I'll give it all to Tuantuanmei. If all else fails, just sell me to their family for a few months and let me work for a while."

The village chief was helpless and looked at Jiang Tuantuan, "How about asking him to compensate you with half a bag of grain first, and I will urge him to pay back the rest later."

"Half a bag of food was given to my family. How can he survive?"

The village chief snorted, "Let him chew the bark."

"No," Er Laizi cried out sadly, then he got up from the ground and walked over to Jiang Tuantuan. "Tuantuan sister, how about I go to your house and help out for a few months to make up for my sins?"

The village chief wanted to slap him, "You go to someone else's house to eat and drink for free, do you have any shame?"

Jiang Tuantuan thought about it and decided it was a good idea. "Grandpa Village Chief, let him bring half a bag of grain left at home and come to my house to help for three months. I'll take care of his food and drink during this time. These three months are the slack season for farming, and the seeds have all been planted."

When Erlaizi heard this, he said yes repeatedly, got up and ran home to get food.

The village chief saw that this was the best solution, so he had no choice but to agree and warned: "Er Laizi is not a bad kid, he's just a little lazy. His parents passed away early, so he hasn't been disciplined. When he comes to your house, if he doesn't listen, beat him up. If that doesn't work, come find grandpa, and grandpa will teach him a lesson for you."

Jiang Tuantuan nodded excitedly in agreement.

Less than a quarter of an hour later, Erlaizi came back carrying half a bag of food.

Jiang Tuantuan took Erlaizi to say goodbye to the village chief and went home.

On the way, Jiang Tuantuan asked Erlaizi, "How old are you this year?"

"Just had my nineteenth birthday."

Jiang Tuantuan slapped Erlaizi in the face and said, "You're only one year older than me and you're not married yet. From now on, you're not allowed to call me Tuantuan's sister. If you want to come to my house to help for the next three months, you have to listen to me. So you have to call me Tuan Boss."

Er Laizi thought about how he would depend on Jiang Tuan Tuan for food and drink for the next three months, so he had no choice but to accept the offer and reluctantly called out, "Tuan Boss."

This made Jiang Tuantuan very happy.

After arriving home, Jiang Tuantuan told Feng Xiaoli and Jiang Dafeng what had happened, and they accepted Erlaizi in a very Buddhist way.

After breakfast, Jiang Li went to feed the chickens and cows.

Er Laizi also wanted to go and feed the fish, but was grabbed by Jiang Tuantuan and said, "Your job is to open up new land."

"What! Kailuan, you are kidding me," Erlaizi was so sad that he wanted to cry but had no tears.

"Let's open up two acres of land first," Jiang Tuantuan raised the corners of his mouth and smiled mischievously.

Arriving at the plot of land Jiang Tuantuan had chosen in advance, Er Laizi was stunned for a moment and said in a bad mood, "What kind of land did you choose, Tuan Tuan? There are trees, rocks, and weeds everywhere. Even if you open it up, the land is not fertile. Can you grow anything there?"

"The better land is all used for chickens, so this is all that's left. Go ahead and work hard, I'll help you."

Er Laizi reluctantly picked up the hoe and started to dig the ground, pulling out the weeds first, while Jiang Tuantuan picked up stones on the ground beside him.

After feeding the chickens, Jiang Li also came to help. There is strength in numbers. Although there was only a young man, a teenager, and a pregnant woman, they finally picked up all the stones after a day.

Erlaizi felt sore all over and felt nauseous when he saw the hoe.

During dinner, Jiang Tuantuan specially served Erlaizi a little more. Erlaizi was a little touched at first, but then he heard Jiang Tuantuan say, "Eat more, and work harder tomorrow."

Erlaizi suddenly felt that the food no longer tasted good, so he hurried home to take a nap after eating.

The next day, the sun was already high in the sky, but Erlaizi still hadn't come. I knew at once that this guy was just trying to be lazy.

Jiang Tuantuan ran to Erlaizi's house alone and found the door ajar. He kicked it open and said, "Erlaizi, get up!"

Erlaizi was immersed in a dream with drooling from the corners of his mouth. He was frightened and fell under the bed.

"Ouch, that hurts so much."

When he looked up and saw Jiang Tuantuan's face, Er Laizi felt like he had seen a female demon. He closed his eyes and pretended to faint.

Jiang Tuantuan took out the dogtail grass he had just picked from the roadside and started scratching his feet.

At first, Erlaizi could hold it in for a while, but later he couldn't help but burst out laughing.

"I was wrong, boss. I will get up and go to work right now. Please believe me." Erlaizi begged for mercy.

"Be more self-disciplined next time, or I'll call Jiang Li over next time, tie you up while you're asleep, and tickle both of your feet."

Erlaizi initially thought that he would get food and drink by helping out, and maybe even get some meat from time to time, but now he finds that he has really walked himself into a fire pit.

Ever since this incident, Erlaizi has been very diligent every day and goes to Jiang Tuantuan's house to work on time. The villagers are very surprised to see him.

These two beggars have changed their personalities, like they have become different people.

After a month, although Erlaizi became darker and thinner, he looked more energetic.

Er Laizi said to Jiang Tuantuan in a mocking tone, "Look, I've lost weight, but you've gained weight and even gained weight."

Jiang Tuantuan glanced at him speechlessly, "I'm pregnant. I'm already four months pregnant."

"What the hell, you're pregnant," Erlaizi was a little confused.

"Then what are you still standing here for? Go back to the house and rest. My father said that my mother had a hard time when she was pregnant with me and couldn't work. Anyway, the land will be plowed soon, so you won't be needed anymore."

Jiang Tuantuan nodded, "Then I'll go and see Xiao Lili."

"How many chickens have been hatched this month?" Jiang Tuantuan asked.
