Chapter 14 Old Man

Chapter 14 Old Man

Before knocking on the door, Comrade Xiao Yan even managed her facial expressions, opening her mouth and moving her facial muscles, grimacing for a while before closing her mouth, making her look very serious.

Song Lubai thought she was exaggerating.

Comrade Xiao is so on high alert; it seems that the family inside is really not to be trifled with.

"Knock knock knock"

"Knock knock knock"

I knocked on the door several times, but no one answered.

Xiao Yan simply shouted, "Aunt Li, I know there are people at your house. I am Xiao Yan from the street office. Someone reported that suspicious people have come to your house. If you don't come and open the door, I will go and find the police."

"I'll count to three. If you don't open the door by then, the police will be here..."

Before the words were even finished, the wooden door was pulled open, and a short, thin old woman with a thin face opened the door with a long face.

With triangular eyes, high cheekbones, a thin face, a mouth shaped like the character "八" (eight) pointing downwards, and a fierce look in his eyes, he has a harsh and ruthless appearance that makes him seem like someone not to be trifled with.

"What are you doing? Anyone who didn't know better would think I'd done something horrible. What have I done here now? Which damned bastard reported my family? What did I ever do to you? You're always doing such despicable things, your ancestors' graves must be gushing black water, aren't you afraid of being struck by lightning?"

The old woman, hands on her hips, started berating the neighbors who had reported her family in front of the two of them.

After she finished cursing, Xiao Yan pushed open the door and went in, feeling uneasy.

The old lady hurriedly walked in front of the two, glanced back at the unfamiliar face Song Lubai, raised her eyebrows, and looked Song Lubai up and down with her triangular eyes. Her gaze lingered on the armband on Song Lubai's arm. "A newcomer, huh?"

Before Song Lubai could greet her, she heard the old lady purse her lips and say, "Just a bunch of useless maids. What can maids accomplish? What good are they..."

Song Lu retorted with a stern face: "Chairman Mao said that women hold up half the sky. How can girls be useless? You are more capable than Chairman Mao, and you want to overturn his words. Who are you? Oh, you are an old girl. You have been useless since you were a child and you are useless now. Useless people are just wasting food. Tell me, what should we do?"

The old lady hadn't expected the brat to be so sharp. With a smug look in her eyes and her chin held high, she said triumphantly, "So what do you suggest? You're just a useless brat. I'm not a brat anymore, I'm different from you. You have no manners whatsoever, your words are so awful, and you…"

Song Lubai sneered: "What's the difference? The little girl has grown into an old woman. Useless people are just a waste of food to live. They might as well be dead."

The old woman hated hearing her tell her to die, and angrily raised her hand to slap Song Lubai.

Could Song Lubai really let her slap him?

After dodging, she raised her voice, "If you dare touch me, we'll go to the police station and have a word with you. We'll show you whether women can hold up half the sky and whether the police officers at the station agree with that statement."

"Thump"

The small door in the courtyard suddenly made a sound, as if someone inside was banging on it.

The old lady wanted to retort, but when she heard the noise, a look of guilt and nervousness flashed across her eyes.

Song Lubai pointed at the door, her face stern, "Open it."

The old lady objected: "There's only one chicken inside, lively and energetic. It ran away as soon as the door opened. If we can't catch it, will you compensate me?"

The door clicked again at that moment.

The old lady's guilty conscience was so obvious that Xiao Yan instinctively felt something was wrong.

"Open it, or I'll call the police."

The old lady dodged the question, saying, "You didn't come here to investigate? I do have some relatives visiting. I'll go and call them out. You can ask whatever you want, but don't say I'm not cooperating."

The two men remained silent, their faces grim. The old woman wiped the sweat from her brow and said, "I told you, it's just a chicken, there's really nothing else."

Xiao Yan: "Where are your son and daughter-in-law?"

The old lady sighed softly, "My son went to work, and my daughter-in-law isn't feeling well; she's inside."

Xiao Yan pressed for details: "Which room?"

The old woman's hand trembled as she pointed to the window of the main house, but her eyes then glanced at the small, dilapidated house in the yard that was making the noise.

Xiao Yan nodded. "Alright, let's go inside and make a record of the situation."

Song Lubai looked at her disapprovingly.

How can we just let it go like this?

This old man is clearly hiding something important.

Xiao Yan gave her a look, telling her to calm down.

They were both women, and the old woman clearly didn't respect them.

Once the important business is finished, we can find other people patrolling nearby to come over, or go directly to the local police station to find the police. That old lady will definitely behave herself.

Two men were sitting in the main room, one looked to be in his sixties and the other in his forties or fifties.

"Name, age, relationship to the host family, and a letter of introduction..."

Xiao Yan asked questions according to procedure, while Song Lubai sat aside and quickly took notes.

She finally understood why the things written in the notebook were such a mess.

Even though others speak at a normal pace, the person taking notes can't keep up with the pace and will feel anxious to keep up, resulting in messy handwriting.

Yu Dali is thirty-one years old.

After noting down the number, Song Lubai looked at Yu Dali twice in disbelief.

Given the weathered, dry, and wrinkled state of her skin, she would believe he was forty-eight.

The letter of introduction was fine, and it stated that the visit was for family purposes. After asking about all the details, Xiao Yan and Song Lubai found no problems.

After asking all the questions and taking notes, the old lady couldn't wait to send them away.

"Is everything alright? If not, then you should go now."

Xiao Yan pointed to the door to the inner room, "Open the door, let me see your daughter-in-law."

The old woman blocked the doorway: "What's so interesting about her? She's sick, very sickly, and she'll infect you."

Xiao Yan raised her voice: "Open it! If you don't open it, I'll call the police."

The old man sitting to the side bent over and opened the door. Through the curtain, he could vaguely see the blankets spread out on the bed inside, but he couldn't be sure if anyone was lying there.

Song Lubai tried to go in, but the old woman stopped her.

The old man standing to the side said with a long face, "You're not police officers, what right do you have to go in?"

Song Lubai paused in her steps.

She was just a household registration officer, and although her job was similar to that of a household registration police officer at a police station, she ultimately had no law enforcement power.

Song Lubai had no choice but to give up.

Under the old lady's smug gaze, the two were ushered out of the courtyard.

The door slammed shut, and the old woman's unpleasant words came from inside.

"I told you that girls can't do anything right. What can girls do? They can't do anything right, they might as well be dead."

Song Lubai clenched her fist. "Old man, you're a woman yourself, yet you look down on women."

Xiao Yan advised, "Calm down, calm down. There are several well-known women like this old lady in our area. If a man comes to her door, she won't dare to be so rude."

Song Lubai said definitively, "There must be something wrong with that room. We can't just leave like this."

Xiao Yan nodded: "I know, she probably beat her daughter-in-law again and locked her up. You stay nearby and don't go anywhere. I'm going to the police station to call someone to open the door."
