Chapter 170 A Letter from Home
Lu Xingye, who has changed careers, has little enthusiasm for his current job.
The personnel department seemed to be a department with some power, where one could make a lot of money, but he didn't care.
His first important task after taking office was to determine the fate of this group of eighty-odd people.
After the personnel list was announced, these kids tried every means to curry favor with him behind his back, but he coldly rejected them all.
You can block the young ones, but you can't block the old ones.
Wang Haiquan and Lu Xingye were not familiar with each other; after all, they had only known each other for two months and were just nodding acquaintances.
When he mentioned that someone had come to ask him to stay, Wang Haiquan said, "You don't seem like the kind of person who's so easy to talk to. Why are you willing to do things for anyone who comes to ask?"
Lu Xingye sat back in his chair, saying nonchalantly, "It doesn't really matter to me who stays here."
Since that's the case, Wang Haiquan won't stand on ceremony.
"Which department at headquarters still needs staff? Xiao Song is quick-witted and has a high level of awareness. If he stays with me, he'll just be doing some paperwork. Do you think there's anywhere else he could go?"
Lu Xingye said, "I think the newly established tobacco company is a good place. The office isn't here; it's over at the grain bureau."
Wang Haiquan hesitated for a moment.
He said it was better to stay at headquarters, as working at a branch company was not as good as working at headquarters, especially since it was a newly established tobacco company.
The cigarettes sold in department stores are either imported from other provinces or purchased from cigarette factories within the province. Locally produced cigarettes make up the majority of the cigarettes sold in the stores.
Wang Haiquan felt that with the cigarette factory backing him up, the tobacco company's future prospects were clear at a glance.
"Isn't there anywhere else good to go?"
Lu Xingye: "Since you don't like that place, you can still go to your place or the secretary's office."
Wang Haiquan sensed something was off about the way Lu Xingye was looking at him, so he waved his hand and said, "You can decide what to do. Just let her stay at headquarters."
If he said anything more, Lu Xingye would start to suspect that he and Song Lubai had an improper relationship. Lu Xingye's gaze made him feel uneasy.
After Wang Haiquan left, Lu Xingye started looking at the pile of documents on the table.
Arranging where these people go is not a difficult task.
Upon seeing Sun Hong's name on the list, Lu Xingye frowned, his gaze lingering on her name.
Although there weren't many spots left at the Shicheng headquarters, he felt that one should be reserved for Sun Hong.
If Sun Hong leaves, who will wash his clothes?
…
Song Lubai jogged back to her dormitory and opened the package her mother had sent.
The package contained a glass jar of watermelon jam beans, a pair of cotton shoes, a blue sweater, brown sugar wrapped in yellow paper, two packets of peach shortbread, a packet of biscuits, a small packet of orange-flavored fruit candy, and two jars of mandarin oranges.
The cotton shoes were new. When she put them on the bed, she noticed something in the hole in the shoe. She reached in and pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
Song Lubai thought it was a letter and put it in her pocket.
Wei Yang said he didn't like sweets or spicy food. Among all the food, she could only pick out the watermelon sauce beans with a little spice. Taking just one was too stingy, so she turned to Liu Xiang and asked if she could have some of the walnuts her family had sent her. She could exchange them for two cans of mandarin oranges.
Liu Xiang asked, "Did you give this to Wei Yang?"
Song Lubai nodded, "I can't keep taking his things."
Liu Xiang took out walnuts from the cupboard and gave her nearly a pound.
Song Lubai packed the walnuts, and besides the watermelon sauce beans, she also stuffed in a bag of peach shortbread.
Who doesn't love peach shortbread? Song Lubai thinks that even people who don't like sweets will love peach shortbread.
Feng Ying said, "I still have some chestnuts here, I'll share some with him too."
I always feel bad about eating Wei Yang's food.
We could only send things that wouldn't spoil easily from our hometown. Whenever someone in the dorm sent something, we'd share it with everyone so we could all have a little something to enjoy.
Song Lubai quickly packed her things, grabbed her cloth bag, and went out.
In the dormitory, Wang Qun ate raisins and said, "They must be dating."
Feng Ying: "I think Comrade Wei is good; he cares a lot about Lu Bai."
Liu Xiang: "What will happen to Lu Bai if he stays in Shicheng and Comrade Wei stays in the Sixth Division?"
Feng Ying said, "This distance is not a problem. In my hometown, there are men who marry soldiers. We only see each other a few days a year at most. Unlike here, we can find soldiers in Shicheng."
At the courtyard gate, Song Lubai handed the cloth bag to Wei Yang and said with a smile, "The walnuts Liu Xiang gave me and the chestnuts Feng Ying gave me are both local products from Henan Province. The watermelon sauce and soybeans were made by my mother. They're not spicy, so you can definitely eat them."
When she spoke, Wei Yang's eyes were full of smiles.
She didn't know that he was lying to her when he said he didn't like sweets.
He not only loves sweets, but he can also eat spicy food.
If he didn't like sweets, his sister wouldn't send him so many sweet things.
"Comrade Song, I'll come to see you again next time."
He stared intently at her.
Noticing the gaze from above, Song Lubai blushed and said, "If I were still here, we would go eat."
A smile spread from his eyes, and her image was reflected in his pupils.
Song Lubai inwardly cursed herself for being blinded by the gift he gave her, but calmly said, "Then I'll head back now."
Wei Yang watched her walk back, and as he turned around, the corners of his mouth unconsciously turned up.
The dawn of victory was in sight, but he still could not let his guard down.
He must remain highly vigilant until he succeeds.
…
Back in the dormitory, Song Lubai was teased by her roommates, but she managed to shut them up by offering them peach shortbread.
There were many crumbs in the peach shortbread. Song Lubai put the crumbs into her mouth while reading the letter from home.
The words on the letter were loosely written, like chicken claws, and she recognized it as being written by Lin Jianshe at a glance.
"Sister, Mom doesn't want you to bring anything into the house, especially cotton. You can keep the money for yourself. Mom said there's still fifty yuan hidden in the cotton quilt, so you should look for it carefully."
Mom said everything is fine at home, you don't need to remember anything, and don't bring anything home anymore.
Sister, the tang was left for you by Lin Heping and me. Neither of us will eat it; you can have it all.
Sister, when are you coming back? Lin Heping and I miss you.
Also, Mom said that if you find someone, you must tell the family so she can send you money and you can bring your partner home.
Just when Song Lubai thought there was nothing else, she noticed a line of small print on the back.
"Sis, Dad hasn't hit anyone anymore. He listens to Mom a lot now. When are you coming back?"
Upon hearing the name Lin Dahai, Song Lubai sneered inwardly.
She said that in that house, it was either him or her, and that even if she went home in the future, she would not live under the same roof as Lin Dahai.
Lin Jianshe and the others thought she had been beaten away; they simply didn't understand.
Leaving aside the spoilsport, Song Lubai shook her head and sighed as she looked at the pinyin on the paper.
What did Lin Jianshe learn at school? How come he still can't write so many characters?
When Song Lubai saw Lin Jianshe say he missed her, the corners of her lips curved into a smile. Luckily, these two boys weren't like Lin Dahai.
