Chapter 264 Arriving Home

Chapter 264 Arriving Home

The bed was 1.5 meters wide and 2 meters long. After Wei Yang finished washing up, he lay straight on the bed with his feet touching the wall on Song Lubai's side.

Song Lubai felt trapped inside.

She sat up, noticed that Wei Yang's pillow was still a bit far from the edge of the bed, and lay back down without saying anything.

If you ask him to move his pillow back a bit more, he won't feel safe sleeping anymore; he always feels like he's going to fall off.

He asked, "What's wrong?"

It couldn't be that his feet weren't clean and smelled, could it?

Song Lubai patted his stiff calves and said, "You've taken up the whole bed. The bed at home will have to be bigger in the future, otherwise there won't be enough room for me to turn over."

Wei Yang said, "The bed at home is 1.8 meters wide. If you think that's not enough, we can build a kang (heated brick bed) that's 2 meters wide."

Song Lubai said, "We'll talk about it when we get back."

He was quite large, and he was very noticeable in bed. Even though they were pressed together in the car, she didn't feel that he took up much space.

Both of them were asleep, but Wei Yang was abruptly woken up by Song Lubai's antics.

Her legs were so restless; one minute they were pressing down on his legs, the next on his stomach. They would start moving again soon after changing positions, never stopping.

Wei Yang sat up, looked at her peaceful sleeping face, and couldn't help but pinch her cheek.

When Song Lubai frowned, he immediately let go of her, lay down, and clamped both of her calves between his legs, immobilizing her.

Finally, the world fell silent.

Song Lubai was still fast asleep and didn't wake up until dawn.

She felt as if her whole body was tied up, which was even more tiring than riding in a car.

It felt like something was pressing down on me, and in my dazed state, I used a bit of force when I stretched my legs.

Then she heard a gasp.

Wei Yang said in a hoarse voice, "Song Lubai, you're trying to murder your husband!"

Both of them sat up. Song Lubai looked bewildered, while Wei Yang, seeing her like that, didn't know whether to cover her or not, so he simply endured the pain and lay back down.

Song Lubai finally realized what she had done.

It was awkward to say anything, so she could only pretend nothing had happened and go out to wash up.

The outpost had a small canteen; the steamed buns were all vegetarian, and the rice porridge was quite thin. She bought some food and went back to the house. Seeing that he had returned to normal, she breathed a sigh of relief.

When she glanced at him furtively, his eyes followed hers.

At that moment, Song Lubai felt guilty and dared not meet his gaze, feeling extremely uncomfortable all over.

In an awkward moment, she said, "Well, you'll have to get used to it."

Wei Yang was so angry he laughed.

After Song Lubai put breakfast on the table, Wei Yang pulled her in front of him, wrapped her arms around her, and gently pinched her cheek, saying, "You'll have to get used to having another person in the bed from now on. You'll be kicking the blankets or kicking me all night long."

Song Lubai thought to herself, who else is like him, lying so straight in bed, like standing at attention in bed?

After finishing their meal and tidying up, the two left the city and waited at the intersection until after 11 o'clock before they finally caught a tractor to Toqto'a.

The 16th Regiment is located below Toqikesu. It takes about forty minutes to get to Toqikesu from Baishuicheng by tractor.

The two of them, carrying large and small bags, hired a donkey cart in Toqikesu and officially arrived at the 16th Regiment at a little after 1 p.m.

Song Lubai looked around at the appearance of the 16th Regiment headquarters, and her heart sank.

This place, as Wei Yang said, is indeed not as good as the brigade headquarters of his hometown commune.

At first glance, this is a remote and impoverished area. Where no grass grows, the soil is thick, and where grass grows, the reeds are taller than a person.

The road was uneven, with dirt about two fingers thick. Every time a car wheel passed by, it would kick up dust that would blind people. There were many mud houses on both sides of the road, while the clinic and the unfinished school not far away were brick buildings.

Compared to the Sixth Division, there is still a lot of room for development here.

Uyghurs don't like to come to places where Han Chinese gather. Last time when he left, Wei Yang changed vehicles twice on the way, riding in both an oxcart and a donkey cart.

The donkey cart stopped in front of the house.

Wei Yang poured a basin of water for the donkey and a water bag of cooled boiled water for the old man.

The old man smiled and said goodbye to them, then drove away in his donkey cart.

Wei Zhao and Song Lubai carried their luggage into the room together.

Wei Zhao said, "I don't know when you'll arrive. I'll cook right away. The conditions here aren't good, and we can't get many vegetables. I'll just stir-fry a gourd. Is that alright?"

Song Lubai wasn't a picky eater. After nodding, she said, "I want to wash up and change my clothes first."

Wei Zhao pointed outside and said, "I dried a basin of water this morning to prepare for Shaohua and the others to wash their hair. You can use it first, and I'll boil another pot. You two should wash your hair properly."

The three children had gone off to play somewhere. Wei Zhao was busy at the stove outside, while Song Lubai and Wei Yang unpacked their luggage and tidied up their belongings.

“There are three rooms in total. We’ll share one, and the other one has been divided in two. My sister and her daughter will share the smaller one, and the two boys will share the other. The other room will be used as a living room with a dining table. There aren’t many things in the room; we’ll add more later. I’ve put the luggage you told me not to touch in the cabinet over there.”

The cabinet is only half a person's height, located under the windowsill. It can be used to store things inside, and some daily necessities can be placed on top.

The walls were covered with newspapers, and at first glance, the room wasn't very nice.

The house didn't have many belongings, but it was clean and tidy.

Song Lubai is fairly satisfied for now.

Fearing she wouldn't be satisfied, Wei Yang said, "In a few days I'll go to the construction team and get some lime water. When I get back, I'll paint the walls white, and the room will look brighter."

Song Lubai said, "If it won't affect you, then do it; if it will have a bad impact, then don't do it."

He's the regimental commander now, so he has to be careful during this special period.

The two are now inextricably linked as husband and wife; if he recovers, she recovers too, and if he doesn't, she doesn't recover either.

Song Lubai certainly hoped that he would get better and better.

After spending a few days together, Wei Yang felt that she was quite understanding throughout the journey, completely unaware that Song Lubai had only spoken from beginning to end.

He pulled her to the bedside, and just as he put his arm around her waist, Wei Zhao, carrying a wooden basin, kicked the door open and came in.

Wei Yang hurriedly let go, and Song Lubai also moved to the side.

"Sis, could you please knock before coming in next time?"

Wei Zhao put down the basin and said, "Who would have thought that you two would be so lovey-dovey in broad daylight?"

"Hurry up and wash, then I'll have dinner ready."

Before leaving, Wei Zhao said, "I'm not a good cook, so please don't mind, Xiao Song."

Song Lubai laughed and said, "Tomorrow, after I've rested, I'll let you try my cooking."

Wei Zhao laughed and said, "Then I'll be waiting."

The atmosphere was ruined, and the two couldn't continue their affectionate behavior.

Wei Yang stood up. "You go wash first. I'll clean up the meat and bones. This afternoon, we'll take the candy to the secretary and deputy regimental commander's house to deliver it, get to know them, and then take some wedding photos. Tomorrow, we'll have a simple wedding at our own home. How does that sound?"

Song Lubai nodded, "Okay, you can arrange it as you see fit."

Wei Yang left with a smile on his face.
